I know it will never be this, but in a just world, a Shenmue anime would be slice-of-life taken to the extreme. Like a whole 5+ minute scene on Ryo getting a capsule toy and inspecting the prize and an entire episode dedicated to one shift at the harbor driving a forklift.

Just caught the first episode. I didn’t like it very much! I dunno. Not only is it playing extremely fast and loose with the pace and plot, I don’t think it was particularly engaging as a first episode of a series. Like if I knew nothing about Shenmue and watched that, I wouldn’t be intrigued to see more.

I really liked the first episode. It was really nice seeing Ryo actually in school, and EMOTING for real. It's great that they also show the police and Ryo's thoughts on things throughout the episode. He feels a lot more human.

For what it’s worth most of the thread for live chatting I was posting in during the premier had people get interested in it that knew nothing about Shenmue so I call it a success so far! Although yeah I and the others that knew what was going on agreed they are just blazing through S1’s plot. Almost thought we’d be on the boat at the end of the episode  I’m hoping the section on the second game is better paced since there is more actual content for them to work with and pace out better. I’m just happy Tom actually got to show up!

afaik it’s airing dubbed on Toonami, Adult Swim’s anime block, which you can watch live on their website if you sign in with your tv provider account. Otherwise, subbed episodes are going up at the same time on Crunchyroll, but it’ll run you $7 monthly to be premium, for which there is a 14 day free trial. Those are the only options right now that I know of, and I’m afraid to say I don’t know how viable they are in the UK.

Let’s take a poll on which is more unlikely to happen: The anime generates enough revenue and interest for Shenmue 4 to be made. The anime generates enough revenue and interest to continue past Shenmue 3’s story. Also from the way they’re blasting through Shenmue 1, it seems likely they’ll at least get into Shenmue 2 within this first season, which the promo art also supports.

On my bookmarks I have the threads for Shenmue, Hypnospace Outlaw, and The Magical Realms of Tír na nÓg: Escape from Necron 7 – Revenge of Cuchulainn: The Official Game of the Movie – Chapter 2 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa. It's been a p good week for two of those. Can't wait to get my rear end kicked by Lan Di again. When my son comes of age I will show him Shenmu. He will then pass down the middle chapters to my grandson, who will finally best Lan Di. This is gonna be the historical record of 1980s Asia my family will know.

This story is not going to end with Ryo beating Lan Di lol. Like if anything, it will be some QTE where, using inhuman reflexes, you have to Press X to Forgive Lan Di and Break the Cycle of Revenge.

My hot prediction for 3 was they’d showdown and then come to terms to face an even bigger threat but who the gently caress knows anymore I mean so far the series has hinged on “headstrong ryo gradually learns the value of friendship” so I highly doubt the final chapter hinges on him performing a sick fatality on lan di

Furthermore the series has kind of telegraphed that lan di and ryo are similar in their origins and respective desire for revenge, there’s gonna be some coming to terms before the story ends
