LifeLock's CEO gave out his social security number and challenged people to steal his identity. Guess what happened, 13 times in a row? While Davis said that this proved LifeLock worked since identity thieves were only successful 13 times, the FTC disagreed and fined the company $12 million for deceptive advertising in March 2010. Oh man, found another quote:There’s never been quite another marketing disaster as the one faced by Pepsi in the Philippines in 1992. BexGu fucked around with this message at 19:28 on Feb 28, 2019 |

Plenty of these PR “disasters” are companies that know exactly what they are doing. Very few people give a poo poo enough to boycott a company when a controversy about an ad blows up but it gets a shitload of people talking about your product. Like when Nike signed Kaep I remember there was a several-minute segment about the ad on NPR that morning, you literally can’t buy that kind of exposure.

Maybe, but when the US Justice Department looks into your company for violated child pornography laws that is a pretty big problem. Especially for a company that is known for hiring young models in the first place. I would agree with you if the Justice Department didn't involved even with the fully page ad they had to take out apologizing.

or, more importantly, are we assuming that people only get angry at dumb poo poo because they're being carefully manipulated, rather than that capitalism has ingrained itself so deeply into our lives that the purina cat food twitter saying there should be more women in tech is a betrayal not only of our gadfly like attention spans but of our long held personal values

I still get the netflix DVDs since they still have stuff on DVD that you can't find streaming anywhere. I don't understand why people were so quick to give up physical media, you can't re-sell digital media and it's just a botched licensing agreement or bankruptcy away from disappearing.

Hm, I guess. Maybe he should've shown off something like Final Fantasy VII to demonstrate the PSone emulator on the PSP, because that thing is seriously impressive considering the hardware limitations. edit: I think my favorite thing about the whole PS3 reveal fiasco is the fact Phil Harrison, the guy best known for handling PR in the early days of the PS3 and giving us quality quotes such as "rumble is a last-generation feature", was hired by Microsoft to handle PR for all the Xbone reveal stuff. I don't remember if he was the one who said the "We have a system for those people and it's called the Xbox 360" thing, but it might as well have been.
