yeah somehow it like, made whatever drive it was in miscalibrate the heads and then from then on it'd gently caress up the formatting on any disk you put in afterwards

no. those are two completely different issues that everyone gets mixed up.

the click of death was because iomega cheaped out on some mid-period zip drives that made them lose calibration. the disks would work fine in another drive, and it doesn't really affect early or later drives unless they are very worn out.

the disk damage was an unrelated thing that only happened if the actual disk material inside the plastic case was damaged in a very specific way.

I remember the incantation

code:
cls > thecode.txt
to produce the escape sequence to use with ansi.sys to make your .bat scripts do cool poo poo like use colour.

Then I removed ansi.sys from config.sys because I need the ram.

i must have spent an hour or two messing around with the config.sys, but ultima vii - the black gate is a pretty good game, well worth the effort. they did something weird with the expanded memory or something so you can have synthesized speech; really neat intro with this skull

i had a special disk for that config because it required like every TRS be removed, it took a poo poo-ton of low memory to get whatever poo poo it needed loaded

god that was a pain in the rear end
