Take me to the green valley,
lay the sod o'er me,
I'm a young cowboy,
I know I've done wrong
Wow, great choice. I saw this in college and could never shake it. It's a hard rec to pull off (and oh lord, have I tried) but you're really laying it out well. It's got everything that's great about Soviet film: complex characters, room for both traditional drama and balls-to-the-wall experimentation, and an insane behind-the-scenes censorship story. The Russian Civil War is such a perfect setting for the story and it's unfortunate that because it's steeped in so much specific history/culture, it makes it largely impenetrable to a Western audience.
