I found The Irishman exhausting. Scorsese's needledrops are so tired, and his choices are so predictable. All the dialog is in this ridiculous code that almost seems improvised at this point, since all of these actors have hundreds of hours playing what’s essentially the same character. By far the best, freshest performance in the whole thing is Jim Norton's cameo as Don Rickles.

I hope this is his elegy to the romanticized mob and we can get over this love affair with sociopaths. Mob chic costuming, excess porn, the savvy working class quip by the ignoramus, piles of money, the no longer shocking brief brutality, dis is owah thing: okay, okay we get it.

Pesci plays a character completely different than any of his other mob roles.

this also bothered me - if i hadn't been binging i wouldve quit watching after 2 episodes. i dont know anything about the watchmen, but the first 5 episodes felt like there was just a ton of lore i was supposed to know about but didnt (turned out i didn't really need to as you say, the last few episodes tie it all together)

The show is much better if you haven't read the comic.

Yeah didn't a cop kill a person recently while wildly trying to shoot a dog running at him. I think they were called specifically to help the woman too.

I watched The Confession Killer right after I finished Don't gently caress With Cats. I was kinda bored with the first episode but it got me hooked with episode 2. Check out Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer sometime.

Does anyone else find the pushback against the Netflix model of dropping an entire season to be weird? The arguments in favor to the traditional weekly model mostly all revolve around keeping hype around the show, rather than the content of the show itself. Hype being the most important thing.

For gently caress sake, don't bring back the old ways just because you want to savor baby Yoda memes.

Yeah it's dumb. I got some pushback in the Better Call Saul thread when I said every show should drop all at once at this point. Their argument was you can't really discuss the show which I don't really care about I just want to watch the show.

Dropping everything at once just feels like it feeds into an ADHD mentality of "get as much poo poo out as fast as possible", and that tends to not be in line with quality, most of the time. Dropping all episodes at once does mean people are more forgiving of mediocre shows, I feel. Like, if you're going to sit down and power through 10 hours of a show in 1-3 days, you're not really absorbing anything other than the highlights. You don't really have time to reflect on a show and if you even really like it or not; you just finish it than go to another.

If people are really concerned with being able to watch all episodes in one go, just wait until a season is over. If the show is actually worth you're time, you'll still want to watch it. It's okay to sometimes slow down.

Nah. Drop it all at once and let people choose.

Groovelord Neato
Dec 6, 2014

Nah. When we'd talk about it at work we'd have to be careful because some people would wait a couple weeks to catch up because of life or whatever. Wouldn't have made a difference had they (properly) dropped the season all at once since everyone was at different point anyway.

It's getting your meal all at once instead of a side per day not having ice cream for dinner.

Profit motive isn't the only reason that someone would want to manipulate the opinions of the masses. Money is just the most tangible and easily measured form of power, but people still have desires for other forms of power.

Why would there be an internal power imbalance in a post-scarcity society? There are no rich on top that need to get a portion of the population that isn't ultrarich on their side to work against their material interests.

The way it treats a horrific outcome as triumphant is pretty original. It's what I find most disturbing about it and Midsommar.

I don't think either is a comedy though each has funny bits.

Better Call Saul is the best TV show on right now and it's not close (it's hilarious four of the seasons lost the Emmy to the ALL the bad seasons of Game of Thrones).

Mike knows that generally speaking the people a vet has in his rolodex for unsavory work aren't going to be the brightest or the actual toughest of the bunch. He knows they aren't say cartel enforcers and you'll notice Mike doesn't treat Nacho and his muscle the same way.

As to your first complaint - pride goeth before a fall. People don't act logically/rationally in real life all the time. They often act totally opposite for seemingly bizarre reasons. It's pretty clear by the point you're at (and gets clearer and clearer as the show goes on) that Jimmy is smart and hard-working in specific ways but often undermines himself because of either being stuck in his ways or wanting to get back at someone else.
