I'm really just expecting more of a end of the western roman empire sorta thing. Everyone getting hungrier as time goes on. The land just getting more unproductive over time as well as everyone getting poorer. Eventually the government starts giving less and less of a poo poo what's happening where you are. Someone robs and shoots your neighbor and nobody does anything and the house stays empty with the door broken in and open.. Then one day you wake up and the only person with any authority or power in your town is the guy who owns the mill, and if you beg him hard enough you can be his serf in exchange for food.
