We'll take stock of what liquids we have and substitute the molten salt for whatever's most appropriate, then. As long as it can transfer heat to run the turbines it will provide electricity.

The tanks weren't entirely empty as it turns out. Unfortunately, mostly empty tanks are the most dangerous as the fuel vapors trapped inside are much more prone to ignition. Fresh air, a spark, and an explosion. One life was lost. An accident, no one is to blame.

Action: Improvise a smelter
With additional tools available, we have the ability to bring at least some parts of the plant back online. The power generation aspect is not available, but the reflectors work and the sun's energy can be focused. We may not be able to melt salt, but we can use that heat to soften or melt the masses of scrap metal scattered around and reforge it into something more useful.

Rosalia, from the excavation team observes the fire and our lack of fuel and proposes using whatever's in the tanks as fuel for a mining vehicle. Master Greta warns that there's a procedure to this thing, and it's not as simple as liquifying the gas and pumping it in, but they do it anyway - to the expected result. The ignition starts, and the car sputters to life... for a couple of seconds, and several loud pops are heard before the engine just stops.

Action: Convert engines to use natural gas

The gas-as-fuel experiment does raise a perfectly valid point, though - if by any chance there is enough natural gas left in these tanks to fill a tank or two, then perhaps we could make use of that. With the tools and knowledge we posess, it would theoretically be possible to trial the conversion of one or two vehicles from the mining fleet to use liquified natural gas instead of petrol or diesel.

Iona's Penance
It has been six weeks since Iona left our community and we have received no sign of life since. It is highly likely that she will never return.

Someone is caught trying to sabotage the efforts of the community. How does the community respond?

One of the workers helping to set up an improvised smelter is caught when he deliberately produces sloppy work to try and weaken the heat inside the smelter. When questioned why he answers that we do not have the right to alter the Tower's design, it is an artifact left behind from the times before and we should limit ourselves to restoring it to its former glory. The community is perplexed by his opinion, although some see they can see the logic in it.

This act of sabotage also renews the calls for the establishment of a standardized justice system.

Action: Prepare for the trials

The community agrees that this cannot be put off any longer and starts setting up the trials of Terrin and the saboteur.

Dig up gas tanks

While at least half of the tanks are either completely or mostly empty thanks to the passage of time, the metal they are made out of is tough and suitable for high pressure storage and piping, and we are fortunate enough at least that we can fill one of the larger reserve tanks to capacity.

Cactus farm
Not all is bad news though. Cultivation of the cactuses in the arroyos is yielding literal fruit. The transplanted cactuses have taken root a thrived, and several baskets of atun fruits are gathered.

Start a project
One of the Masters notes that the cactus fruits are sugary enough to make it possible to ferment them into a beer or wine. We'll have to work with wild yeasts, so the alcohol content won't be high and the flavors won't be complex. But the fermentation will preserve the calories in the fruit by converting the sugars, and the alcohol will ensure that the water it's made with will always be safe to drink.

Without any way to treat any diseases from drinking dirty water, Thurmond, Master of Biology warns that our water, sourced straight from the aqufiier and unprocessed, is potentially dangerous, and we have no functional water filtration or purification in place. A quick fix solution is proposed, to use the Tower to boil water and render it potable. While this would most likely reduce the efficacy of the Tower for other purposes, he insists it must be done to prevent an outbreak of disease that could threaten our entire community.

Engine conversion
The first trials of the natural gas engine turn out better than expected - the mine buggy's engine ignites, revs up, and actually moves the vehicle around. While our supply of fuel is limited and converting every vehicle still in decent condition will take a while, the theory is proven.

Hold a conversation
With the engine conversions a success and natural gas remaining we now have access to mobility and horsepower we could only dream of before - the only question is, where to first, and what to carry? If nothing else, we could attach some tanks and gather more water in preparation for running the Tower's turbines..

Trials

We have cleared out a room in the base of the tower to set up a court of justice. Master Greta, Master Errol and Master Mattias are presiding and have decided that the verdict shall be decided by three members of the community, randomly picked. Since Terrin is still recovering, his family pleads for him, they assure that he only had the best interests of the community at heart and that without his quick and decisive strike, the Prowlers would have inflicted much more harm on us. Iona's childhood friend Ylva, who has become a de facto leader of the Ionists argues that the strike was unprepared and reckless. She also asserts that there was no guarantee of the Prowlers even attacking us if left alone.

Smelter

Several reflectors are redirected to focus on a crucible suspended at the focal point. The size of the reflectors means that enough heat can be brought on to the crucible for long enough to melt different metals. While keeping the sun's rays focused on the crucible for a long enough time to do forging is difficult, the ability to melt metals to the point where they can be cast is useful. Now we can separate, purify, and re-cast the scrap and salvage that litters the desert around us.

The distribution of the first batch of booze has about the expected result. Morale is noticeably higher, but so are hangovers, and it doesn't take long for the increase in workplace accidents to be noticed. Some more conservative Masters are quick to assign blame, saying that without a prohibition on alcohol the community will suffer.

Distillation Plant
A section of the hot loop is re-arranged and modified to heat water to its boiling point, then collect the vapor and condensation to filter out any excess particles in the water. With all the modifications we have performed, the Tower resembles less and less the original power plant and more a network of pipes and metal, but we have the ability to purify water on a basic level now.

Hold a Conversation
