I know it's because they only have the licensing for it, but CSIII ain't exactly a great entry point to jump in blind to the series as it's a single ongoing story between them all. Think like, say, Game of Thrones novels.

Nope, the Legend of Heroes (or Trails) series spans multiple games and protagonists, but it's all a single ongoing narrative across a continent chasing a shadowy organization. It goes in Trails in the Sky, Trails in the Sky: Second Chapter, Trails in the Sky: Third Chapter (which is admittedly more of a side-game to tie off some existing loose ends and is optional overall), then splits into two game series occurring in parallel; Trails of Cold Steel 1&2 taking place in the country of Erebonia, and Trails of Azure and Trails to Zero taking place in the neighbouring City-State of Crossbell (the latter two games never receiving an official English localization, but you can get by just playing the Cold Steel games).

Then all that comes together in Cold Steel 3 (hence why it's a bad entry point) and heads into the big arc finale of Cold Steel 4. Each game has an average playtime of about 50+ hours, with the Cold Steels getting upwards of 75+ hours. It is a dense series.

If you want a good starting point, Cold Steel 1's perfectly fine as the Trails in the Sky games occur in another country and are largely preamble to things kicking off in earnest in a broader sense.
