welp looks like stadia's lead engineer quit

https://9to5google.com/2021/05/26/justin-uberti-google-clubhouse/

but of course, this happened months ago and he was never any good at his job and it's not news guys it's NOT NEWS OKAY.

edit:

reddit posted:

So he got a good offer from Clubhouse and gets to expand his technical skills in the area he enjoys.

I don't see this as a bad thing for Stadia. He found an attractive opportunity and took it. Stadia will find appropriately talent and fill is role with another skilled individual. This is normal in the tech field day in and day out.

I hope he continues to do well, and I imagine Stadia will still do well also.

--

That fact that he got offered a ton of money probably with stock options to change jobs and he took it is not really that interesting.

It's also probably good for Stadia, because there's room for improvement on the front end of things.

That's an chance I'm willing to risk if it's a "pay a monthly sub and go nuts with it" sort of deal, like how Netflix works with movies. It's Stadia's "pay us money for access to a thing you don't really own" that's pretty bullshit.

This really can't be overstated. Nobody gives a poo poo about streaming, people give a poo poo about libraries. Netflix isn't cool because you can watch it anywhere, it's cool because it has cool things to watch. I have a gaming pc, a ps4 and a switch, and i still sub to Gamepass because it's a good deal for a good library of games. Streaming makes sense as an accessory to a library service, not as a selling point.

yes, and AWS obliterates both of them combined x1000.

There was almost zero chance of backwards-compatibility with the PS3 on PS4 because it's on a CELL processor and to my understanding coding for the architecture can best be defined by screaming and beating your head against the desk until a functional game pops out. There's zero reason to muddy a perfectly-good x86 platform with one. (Other consoles typically get away with justifying backwards-compatibility by offloading secondary processes through the legacy hardware. The Wii guts in a WiiU drives the tablet rendering, for example).

okay it's 2006, we're sony, we have a contract with IBM and powerpc is a garbage architecture. what if we take one lovely core and add a bunch of little mini cores all over the die? like, yeah they won't have branch prediction which will cripple compile times and yeah they'll need their own new instruction sets, but it'll be worth it for all that floating point power, right?

what do you mean nobody wants to use the mini cores? it only triples the development time! wait, that means they're just gonna shove everything onto the big lovely core oh noooooooooooooooo

This thread is fun because sometimes people post about their wifi6 and cat5e and gigabit connections, and its like going to NYC and staring at all the tall buildings.

If it makes you feel any better I live in NYC and the vast majority of the city is overpriced, overcrowded cable service from the spectrum monopoly. in theory there's verizon fiber in the streets but they never hooked it up because they're literally monsters. I worked in an office on Varick st around the west village, as downtown manhattan as you could get, and they had DSL only. In 2015.

I own a 980ti and I game like fuckin crazy on it, with no real desperate urge to upgrade until the market calms down. I think you're underestimating your card, stadia runs on vega 56 which is really only 10-15% better performance. Overclock it a bit if you can.

To be fair to Stadia it can officially claim the power of the PS5

No, it absolutely can't. Vega 1 vs RDNA 2 is not even close. Stadia's graphics hardware is 4 years, 2 generations and two process nodes behind the ps5. The PS5 has double the ram and core clock with more memory bandwidth.

But the Stadia’s games are being run on a mediocre cpu/gpu combo? Is that right? It can’t be. They want me to pay for PS4 level quality gaming? That’s nuts.

Yeah, the only streaming option with current gen hardware is microsoft at the moment. Sony literally wants you to pay for ps4 level quality gaming, that's what PSNow is.
