BostonDynamics - About our new overlords. Brick Experiment Channel - Someone doing poo poo like pulling 195lb with one single Lego motor. ZenBear - (Mostly Adventure) Let's Play's from a non-overexcited woman with no face-cam. What I've Learned - Well, I learned stuff. Has a cool one hit wonder series. Focuses too much on late 90s stuff for my tastes but it's still pretty good. poparena - Pop culture stuff. Slowly documenting the history of Nickelodeon show-by-show. Doesn't pretend it started in the 90s like most Millennials. History Guy - Nerd dad explains weird and notable events from history. Philosophy Tube - Lots of thoughtful philosophy stuff. Videos from the last year or so are really well produced. Invicta - History with a focus on the ancient and classical eras. Sometimes dry, sometimes philosophical, sometimes completely batshit. Fortnine - Canadian motorcycle youtuber. Used to do gear reviews, but now expanded to other motorcycling topics. Production quality was always good, but has spiked to incredible levels recently. - The illestrator - - Small, up and coming, motorcycle youtuber from NYC. Has done some really good video essays on motorcycle history. Also does motovlogs, and has recently started a series on a BMW K100 project bike. TierZoo - Videos about zoology explained through the lens of video game tier lists. Probably the most unique idea for a youtube channel I've seen in a while. Overly Sarcastic Productions - Cute, funny, informative, and aforementioned sarcastic animations about literature, mythology, and history. Puffin Forest - Another channel with cute animations. This one about DnD and tabletop games. John Michael Godier - Sci-fi author talking about science, space, and futurism. Frequent collaborator with the aforementioned Issac Arthur. Really been into Chinese cooking recently, especially Sichuanese style and found these channels helpful. Its hard to source some of the ingredients, but they usually offer western substitutes and its possible to find most of the rest online. Seconding Steve1989 and Primitive Technology. Welp, I had a few channels in mind like cult movies and hard-to-find golden age hip-hop but they've all been suspended for copyright infringement. Athlean-X Disregard the clickbaityness of the video titles. This guy gives solid advice and breakdowns on the fundamentals of various exercises and stretches, as well as dispelling common myths. Very easy to follow and no gymbro attitude. These videos are 90% of the reason why I am no longer a hunched-over dweeb (the other 10% being the book Supple Leopard). Brandon Tenold Specifically, Brandon's Cult Movie Reviews. I'm a sucker for bad/cult/psychotronic cinema, and Brandon has an almost encyclopedic knowledge of all of these and then some. He brings the snark, but he doesn't always specifically pick on the films he's reviewing: he brings a lot of interesting facts to the table for each one and it's clear he puts a lot of thought and effort into his reviews. He chooses cult classics as well as outright terrible movies, and he's fairly even-handed even when it comes to the worst of the worst. Frog Leap Studios Everybody's probably heard of him by now, but Leo Moracchioli does covers of songs you didn't know you wanted, and blows them all out of the loving water. He does all of his own arranging, instrumentation (most of the time -- occasionally he has guest musicians join him), recording and filming, and he updates every Friday. I wish I could be half as talented at anything as Leo is doing these covers. Best part is, he understands the ins and outs of getting licensing permissions, so all of his covers are legal and available for sale, if you are so inclined.

He's been talking and on camera more often lately and I like both types of his content. DIY: • Modustrial Maker - a guy who makes cool furniture and fixtures using mostly concrete and epoxy • my mechanics - a Swiss guy who never talks finds some ancient, rusted to poo poo tool and rebuilds it to perfection. He frequently mills and lathes custom bolts, washers, or random pieces and his standard of work is incredible. • This Old Tony - welding, DIY, and odd projects. • TysyTube Restoration - another "repairing old things" channel with frequent updates Miscellaneous: • Jelle's Marble Runs - marbles "competing" in "events" and races, with sincere and excellent commentary • My Self Reliance - a middle age Canadian guy (and his dog) build a log cabin (and now outdoor kitchen, sauna, and more) in the Canadian woods. He doesn't talk much until the end of each episode and it's super chill. • StealthGamerBR - this dude is godly at stealth games and watching him murder his way through Hitman or Dishonored levels is jaw dropping • The Great War - follows the history of World War I, in real time. That is, the show started with 1914 and each bi-weekly episode covers the events from the corresponding 2 week period of the war. • Game Theory 101 - a very thorough course in game theory from the basics to very advanced topics • The 11' 8" Bridge - the infamous bridge in Durham, NC that scalps box trucks. It was recently raised to 12' 4" but odds are good that it still hungers (Bold are favorites)

Crafting stuff VeryPink Knits - Good technique videos and tutorials for different, often free, patterns. Does a lot of give aways as well. She occasionally has crocheting tutorials as well. Knitting with Cheryl Brunette - Cheryl Brunette has been doing video tutorials for knitting since the 1980s. Her Sweater Finishing 101 series is still one of the best resources for that particular topic. Tamara Kelly - Moogly - Mostly crochet. Good visual explanations of some of the more unusual stitches like Crocodile stitch, or ones that can be difficult to understand from written instructions like front and back post double. Baking Joy of Baking - Loads of good recipes. Some can be time intensive, but it's all stuff most anyone can do and get the ingredients for. A nice thing is she gives the weights of ingredients, as well as the cup/tablespoon/whatever measurements, which really helps with baking. New recipe weekly. Random stuff MichaelLeroi - Just a couple people reading and ragging on lovely creepypasta. I use it to listen to while working on my crafts. zefrank1 - For the True Facts videos Frog Leap Studios - Guy in Norway who does metal covers of a bunch of songs.

I can't believe nobody mentioned Colin Furze yet. Certified British mad lad with a taste for fireworks, jet engines and a complete disregard for personal safety. Alec Steele - Blacksmithing. Originally British, moved to Montana a while back to do blacksmithing full time. Very high energy and fun to watch. Cocktail Chemistry - Cocktails and other drinks. Very easy listening, videos aren't too long, and you learn a lot about cocktail making. Jeff Quitney - Restores and publishes old videos that are in the public domain. Lots of old newsreels, ad spots from 50+ years ago, army training videos, public service videos etcetera. He got constantly copyright trolled on YouTube so he's on Vimeo now. Tom Stanton - RC hobbyist who builds all kinds of remote controlled rockets, drones, planes and so on. The Slow Mo Guys - Exploding stuff is cool. Watching stuff explode in slow motion even more so. Let's Game It Out - Gaming channel focused on abusing various simulator games in entertaining ways. Blank on Blank - An archive of old, mostly forgotten interviews with famous people, some times before they were famous. Haven't updated in a long time, but the archive is worth listening to.

Reading through these suggestions, I'm realizing I may watch too much youtube. How to Drink - Great channel for cocktail creation and history. He follows David Wondrich's Imbibe! quite a bit, and his tasting notes really make you want to pour a drink. Internet Comment Etiquette - Surprised this isn't in the list (unless I just missed it). Remember the guy from the early 2000's who smoked salvia and tried to do some gardening? He's doing this now. Still funny. Brian David Gilbert - This channel is mostly dead, as BDG is now making videos for Polygon (probably the best on their channel), but this archive of his work is definitely worth a watch. Lots of songs, improv, and some fairly high concept content, to include a rifftrack of the first episode of Stranger Things, and a six part musical series. what else... Donut Media is making the best car videos out there right now. Atrocity Guide for deep dives on weird internet poo poo, a lot of which is tied to SA's golden days. Chris Salomone does relaxing furniture build videos. Jimmy Diresta also makes relaxing construction project builds. I'm pretty sure I found this channel on one of these threads years ago. That's probably enough. You guys remember when every youtuber didn't have brand deals, and videos weren't mostly commercials? I miss those days.

He mostly does reviews of subpar products from pound stores and the like, but also looks at pieces of old and/or pirated video games and other technology. One of my personal favorites of his is this presentation on the game Hareraiser and how it's quite possibly the worst video game ever made, for reasons that go beyond "the game sucks". I don't keep track of my subs so much as bookmark videos and throw them into a giant folder on my bookmark bar and pick things at random, but I've been binging LGR lately so: LGR / Lazy Game Reviews: a nerd reviews and explains old software and hardware. I think the Up to Speed series is getting long in the tooth, mostly because they've already covered the heavy hitters. It's a show with a fuze that will eventually burn out. I'd suggest checking out the rest of their content. The other hosts are great (I like James as well, but I totally get that he could be annoying to some), and some of their shows like Car Wars have a very 2000's discovery channel car challenge show vibe, but without the fixed outcomes, which I think is a good thing. Also If you've not seen the Miracle Whips series, check it out. I watch too much YouTube...

I have a really tough time with Cocktail Chemistry because that guy's sense of style and decor is Upsettingly MidWestern. Otherwise it's a good show. Speaking of Upsettingly MidWestern guys with good content, I've gotta plug: How to Make Everything Andy learns how to make things from scratch. Like, starting at caveman scratch. If he wants to make a sandwich, he has to grow wheat, milk a cow, start a vegetable patch, and kill a chicken. Which takes him about 6 months. If he wants to make a canoe, well, he's got to graduate from the stone age to the iron age, weave twine, and create a powerful resin binder to put together a carving tool. Then he's gotta fell a tree, burn it out, and try to float it. The channel is the history of mankind's technological developments, but through the eyes of a clumsy guy who is terrible at everything but dammit he's gonna learn. If you've checked it out in the past but didn't love it, it's really worth revisiting. He pushed a reset button a few months back and the channel has massively improved. The dude is a bit of a dweeb, but endearingly so, and his content has only gotten better and better to the point where each episode since the reboot has knocked it out of the park. The further back you go, the rougher it gets, but it's all worth watching. Start with the stone age. I'll put together a much longer list of channels at a later point because I subscribe to far too many, but for now that's one everyone should check out. feedmyleg has a new favorite as of 19:55 on Dec 16, 2019 |
