Some big, some small. Corridor Digital make fun short films with different VFX, usually based on Videogames of some type. Short and usually gets a smile out of me. Good place to start: Art of the Instakill NYU Game Center is full of smart people talking about the intrinsic nature of videogames, usually with more real world context than other channels of this type. Good place to start: Naomi Clark: Why Tom Nook symbolizes village debt in 18th century Japan Frog Leap Studios have a ton of really well done heavy metal covers of songs from across a wide variety of genres. Even if you're not a metal fan, worth a listen - the videos are also great. Good place to start: Feel Good Inc. (metal cover by Leo Moracchioli) Anomaly Documentaries is from resident goon The Golden Gael and has some great stories of people I had no idea existed. Usually interesting in a kind of 'how does this person come to be' kind of way. Good place to start: Clonaid - The Group That Says They Cloned a Child Kyle Hill does some great short videos on various scientific and philosophical concepts and is a great way to learn something new relatively quickly. Production values and the humour are hit and miss, the content is good though. Good place to start: Roko's Basilisk: The Most Terrifying Thought Experiment Holistic Songwriting is a great exploration of music theory and how famous Songwriters and Bands tend to write their melodies. Particularly interesting if you're into music at all. Good place to start: How Tool Write A Song | Artists Series S2E5 donoteat is an amazing channel about Civil Engineering told through the lens of popular videogame Cities: Skylines. Long videos, huge amount of research and knowledge in every episode. Really interesting if you're looking to find out more about the history, politics and planning of cities. Very focused on the USA though. Good place to start: Cities: Skylines | Power, Politics, & Planning: Episode 1: Parking

But that and the extremely budget CGI makes it strangely authentic and personal. I've gone through over a dozen videos of his in the last week, good stuff. I tried to watch his stuff but I just can't get past the way he talks. I know that's terrible, but its worse than those youtubers who always use an upwards inflection so it sounds like they're always asking questions. It's sad because his videos are really interesting and well written. A newer spooky internet channel is Slightly Sociable and Barely Sociable. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9PIn6-XuRKZ5HmYeu46AIw https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgmI-uiLLAg--vDe7FFdekA I'm not 100% sure why he has 2 channels because they both seem to do the same content, but nothing wrong with it. Looks into mysteries, both online and in the real world. The video about the Silk Road was super interesting (spoiler, the guy running it was real dumb), and the search for the guy who created Buttcoin. And I might as well post Lemmino because I thought his video on DB Cooper was one from the above channels https://www.youtube.com/c/LEMMiNO/videos

Adam Ragusea - Cooking and cooking adjacent topics. He's a former professor and he uses his contacts to get interviews with lots of food science experts when the subject warrants it. Maybe it's because he's just a really dedicated home cook instead of a professional, but I often find his info more helpful than most of the celebrity chefs. I sort of thought I learned about this channel from this thread but I didn't see it anywhere. Sorry if it's a repeat.

The best new channel on youtube is Ghost Town Living, about a guy who spent his life savings on an old mining town in California called Cerro Gordo and is fixing it up while living there alone with a few cats and goats. He has videos of his restorations and his explorations, including a number of videos descending into the vast and complex mine system surrounding the town. The videos are really well produced and it's perfect quarantine watching.

I enjoy his common man attitude His pot of protein video is pretty rough but I get it, He's not about trying to get the absolute best out of food, he's more about getting the best out of your kitchen Contrast this with like, for example , Joshua Weissman. Who makes an easy meal far more complicated, or focuses on dishes that are intrinsically complicated

I've been looking for a youtube channel that was like Good Bad Flicks and Brendan Tenold but for anime. Someone who looks at forgotten/bad/obscure/forgotten and just generally old anime and presents them in an amusing way. The closest I've found that updates regulally is KaiserBeamz's Kyoto Video https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCcxN_gfAE_43Wj6-UWC16bw I mean there's Super Eyepatch Wolf and Mother's Basement but their scopes seem beyond just reviews. There is also Kenny Lauderdale but he doesn't upload as much as the other channel. Though god drat Chargeman Ken. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uczvIKDcnS4

Super Eyepatch Wolf got mentioned earlier. I've only ever seen his videos gushing about anime but I guess he's been doing some deep dives on weird fandoms. He just posted one about Undertale that does a pretty good job exploring why folks latched onto it the way they did and produced mountains of baffling fan works. I learned last year at Anime North that the only reason it was released in North America was due to a promise that if they released Odin they could get I think Space Battleship Yamato. The guy running the panel straight up said he told the head of the company "people will burn our office down if we release this. Its boring, goes nowhere and ends when it could be interesting". The same panel I learned about Invisible Boy Detective Akira, Chargeman Ken and Twinkle Nora Rock Me. As KaiserBeamz says in his videos, the 80s bubble economy resulted in a lot of craptactular anime that had way too much money thrown at it but is just unwatchable.

This thread is pretty close to my YT feed. Some that I'm not sure were mentioned: Forgotten Weapons- Ian is one of those oddball historians that the internet not only created, but allows to thrive. His original concept spawned from the loss of historical documents related to the Pederson device of WW1. It has grown into an incredible resource for various weapons, engineering related to it, and evolutionary dead ends in the mechanical development. Even if you aren't a 'gun guy', it's cool to see some of the weird ways we've tried to improve things. I recommend his video on the iconic Pancor Jackhammer, the iconic video game gun of the late 90s/Early 00s. https://youtube.com/c/ForgottenWeapons Janet Stephens- Forensic Hair styling. Historian recreates hairstyles from art. https://youtube.com/user/jntvstp I'm sure I will think of others, but with the wild subscribe spree I just went on, I'll be damned if I can remember what has already been said.
