Ichiro Suzuki retired at the age of 45 after two games in Japan. With his combined NPB and MLB hits, he sits at 4,367. Suck it, Pete Rose.

the fact that he basically played a full career in Japan then came over to USA and played even longer is amazing. One of the best pure players on the planet, should be voted in with 100% of the vote first year. I think Ichiro and Edgar might be two of the most-cited players that a choice few HoF pitchers, Mariano included, have said they genuinely dreaded facing.

One morning in spring training, 2017, he was in the coaches' room looking at his cell phone text messages. Ichiro told the coaches about one message he had just received from a number he didn't recognize. The guy said he'd gotten Ichiro's number from Alex Rodriguez, and that he wanted to come meet him and study his stretching system.

"What's the guy's name?" asked one of the coaches.

Ichiro strolled to the end of the text. "Some guy named Tom Brady. Who the \[expletive\] is Tom Brady?"

I realize this might be unpopular to say but I don't understand the whole Randy Johnson thing. He's a great pitcher but he is in the HoF in a Diamondbacks hat, I think it's vaguely disrespectful to Ichiro to ask him to share that honor with someone who accomplished the bulk of their career achievements on other teams.

(Full disclaimer: I became a Mariners fan in 2008 so I may not be getting something here, I'm mostly looking at stats)

When closer Kazuhiro Sasaki pitched for the Mariners, he stubbornly refused to don a dress as part of the team's annual rookie hazing ritual. That wasn't surprising. Sasaki rarely tried to immerse himself in anything this side of the Pacific other than the night life in Seattle's International District. Ichiro, however, gladly took part when his time came to be one of the guys by wearing a Hooters chick getup on the team flight (naturally, the orange shorts and tanktop are now folded neatly in his father's museum).

Some sports fans would give anything to be there for an iconic moment in the teams they root for's history. I root for the Niners, Indians, Flames and Raptors. Try not to judge me too harshly for my team choices. And sure, being there for The Catch would have been awesome, or when Kenny Lofton decided to personally murder the Seattle Mariners in the ALCS, or when the Flames won the Cup, or when Vince Carter propelled himself to superstardom at the dunk contest in 2000.

But no.

I'd want to be there to watch Ichiro give one of his profanity laden pep talks before all star games.

I also firmly believe that if he'd started in MLB at say, 21, he'd have Rose's record, or he'd be crazy close. His average hit total per season is 189, and at 6 extra MLB seasons, that'd put him at 4,223. He'd need 34 to break it, and I think he'd hang on with that knowledge.

If anything you're being conservative, that 189 per season number includes nearly a full decade of Ichiro not really being good anymore. Barring injury six more years of 20-something Ichiro breaks Rose's record comfortably imo

Yup. I think he'd have gotten there easily.

An important part of this is the fact that NPB only played 130-135 games per season while he was there. He only broke 200 hits once in Japan (at age 20!) because of this short season length. His AVG in NPB was .353, and he hit .350 his first year in MLB. He averaged .331 his first decade in MLB.

If he makes the majors by age 20-21 I think he pretty clearly beats Rose's record.
