I just started FF3, mainly because of all the references to it in FF14 and especially learning that the Crystal Tower theme is a direct arrangement from it (it's great)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DbUJQO9CZhA

I am playing the 3D remake. I am enjoying the start to it so far, I kind of dig that the first dungeon is already about finding tricks to the system, and job systems are cool.

Anything I should know before getting too far in?

Oh wow, I wasn't expecting all this FF3 hate (or more specifically FF3 remake hate). As I mentioned, I'm playing it mainly because it's one of the FFs I've had zero contact with (the other being 2) and the FF14 designers have basically said it's their favorite FF and have included so many things from it, so I wanted to check it out for myself.

I don't know, I'm enjoying myself well enough -- I just got the Enterprise. I probably would enjoy the original chiptunes compared to the synth stuff from what I've heard, but I don't think I saw an audio option for that.

I know I wouldn't exactly be missing Shakespeare, so a fan translation would probably work, but is there even an official translation of the original Famicom version

What struck me the last time I played FFVIII was how much time Squall spends being pushed into roles that grown ups think he has potential for, how much he loving hates it, and also how much he hates that they're kinda right. I don't remember the exact scene but I think during one of the big Garden fights it struck me how Squall actually is kind of a good leader and surprisingly charismatic and inspirational when he lets his guard down. That's another one of those things that makes me want to go back and replay FFVIII and just kinda go along for the wild ride at the end once the story stops making sense.

:hai:

I just watched a full playthrough of FF8 and even though the streamer was riffing on a bunch of the story stuff, it still rekindled fond memories from playing the original. All the characters have these grace notes that I would trust a 7-style Remake would be able to flesh them out. Like when the Forest Owls have their stupid second plan Selphie is the one to go, "uh we should probably check our contract". Also

The GF memory loss stuff would need a complete overhaul in any revisiting of the story, I agree, it's the only part that was a complete clunker to me on this revisit.

They state that Balamb Garden is the only one that uses GF, which is why it's surprising to find Cerberus at G-Garden and why Selphie found the equivalent of woods porn-but-GF so that she could also have memory loss

I do like the theory that the GF she found was Doomtrain which syncs with her love of trains

I ended up coming to peace with the fact that the only fitting ending for FF8 is an ending where they clearly made the FMV while the story was still in flux and had elements they later went on to remove, because that kind of nonsense is the essence of FF8

For me the greatest flaw of FF8 is that they are trying even more complex storytelling than FF7 but hitting the limits of the JRPG progression framework that had been baked into previous games. FF7 pulled through because it still wasn't too far removed from the SNES days -- like going through the 7OG story now, the characterization is pretty much nonexistent aside from their designated story scenes.

That deeper characterization is the biggest positive change in 7 Remake for me, and something that 8 could totally benefit from. The characters in 8 are treated like they should be more well-developed than they are, because the cinematic setpieces and game progression means you go from graduation to first mission to battle of the gardens to you're in space to Time Kompression and basically the characters have to be warped around that. Like, the GF memory loss feels like something they put in because they weren't confident enough to have a cast of characters that already had complex relationships that predated the story, which is something that worked in old-school RPGs but is pretty alienating to more nuanced dramatic narrative

Also how everyone in the game treats Dr. Ondine as "oh he's kooky eccentric :) " when his main thing is experimenting on children and creating the means to achieve Time Kompression, he's just as bad as Hojo and that was extremely odd

Weren't there postmortem discussions that basically all the minigames were them taking basically every prototype/test thing they had done while learning to work with the new system and somehow cramming it into the game to pad out the playtime to the expected length

I am serious that if they're gonna do a full Remake treatment for 8, just leave the main plot aside and do a 20-hour Card Club Saga. NPCs talking about the war in the background. Edea's monologue about being possessed cut off as Squall yells "It's time to D-d-d-duel!"

Endgame is in Ragnarok shielded from Time Kompression, all of which remain unexplained. Quistis Card King :allears:

I do think there are ways in 8 plays it pretty flippant with child soldier mercenaries, but at the same time it's also pretty much a post-apocalyptic setting where everywhere outside the major cities are blasted wastelands infested with monsters, so it's probably also reflecting a differing set of cultural norms

CharlieFoxtrot

Yeah basically I guess it would be more accurate to say it's a post-post-apocalyptic scenario, like Splatoon. Everyone just basically lives with the new normal that if you walk five minutes from the city center you might run into a giant flying stingray that electrocutes you to death

I honestly had no idea what was happening in any of the cutscenes the references in the dialogue in the first hour.

Then by the 50 hour mark I retroactively understood everything that was being built up also it gets recontextualized by another cutscene and it was awesome

That is nonsense. But I had a worse time playing it than I would've if I had gone in with proper expectations. I actually might give it another try. Some day. In the far future.

The 9 remaster on its own looks great, the neural net mod or whatever is a marginal improvement unless you really need to play it on a 4K screen and will be poring over the backgrounds.
The 7 mods that reject the chibi overworld models and try to cram in the battle models seem to miss the point imo, but whatever floats your boat.
The 8 "remaster" is very bad with the backgrounds (including non-talking NPCs being baked into the background art and blurred to nonexistence lol) almost to the point that I'm not sure a mod can actually help lol.

You can't see it in the still image but some of them have an alternate animation frame that they flip to every 2 seconds, this totally passed muster on a CRT and with the player characters also low-res but it did not look great in the remaster
