the bottom line is that the impeachment isn’t convincing on its own terms. the evidence for quid pro quo is based on rumor, and no matter how much the rumor makes sense it’s not good enough, and that’s why the Republicans think they can beat it. The Ukrainian government also denies any quid pro quo. you can’t convince people that it’s illegal without citing specific congressional statutes which will make the average person’s eyes glaze over, and that’s before you can necessarily even convince them that it was wrong.

when you add all of that up the sum becomes a political disaster.

if the dems had used this as an excuse to begin a long impeachment fishing expedition to dredge up everything they could about trump and his family and their behavior over the past few decades, eventually drawing in the entire republican party, it could have been a great strategy, but the timing of impeachment proceedings is really suspect to me for a lot of reasons

impeachment as a concept was basically going nowhere despite the obvious poo poo they could have impeached him for in the past with a degree of plausibility (pick one, there's dozens, maybe hundreds), and then suddenly it comes out that he wanted to have biden investigated at around the same time that biden was established as the clear (but temporary) front runner in the dem primary (I think this was just coincidence)

starting impeachment then makes it really clear this wasn't about establishing overall narrative advantages going into the 2020 election but simply protecting their own establishment candidate against their own party's left wing during the primary process

focusing entirely on poo poo about the biden's turns impeachment into a really simple narrative of Trump Corruption vs Biden Corruption and while biden is deffo corrupt, trump is way more corrupt than biden, so maybe this seems like a good idea?

but if you're not going to go digging for all of trump's corruption and you're just going to focus it on ukraine, well, biden has been corrupt re: ukraine for a long time and probably more so than trump has, and there have been a million different fox news cinematic universe conspiracy theories swirling around ukraine and the DNC for years now so they have a lot of narratives ready to spin out anyway

the whole thing is a strategic fuckup on behalf of the dems and if they dove on impeachment when it was about children in cages they would have had a better outcome because it would energize anyone vaguely left of center in america while simultaneously demoralizing a lot of the "softer" right wing (you know, all the people who claim to be "independent" or "swing voters")

but it's never about winning for dems so they always eat poo poo

schiff, out of respect for the other party and in the spirit of bipartisanship will vote "present" for impeachment

I vaguely remember that the official investigation states that almighty Russian intelligence didn't actually know what a primary or caucus was until absurdly late into 2016, anyone got the exact fact and citation for this?

wouldn't surprise me a foreign intelligence service didn't know how the 2016 primaries worked because the 2008 clinton campaign didn't understand how the caucuses worked either
