Yasha Levine did a little essay about the mindfuck that many Soviet/Russian immigrants have gone through in the past few years from being the good white immigrants to Russian scum. https://thegrayzone.com/2019/05/28/with-russiagate-we-soviet-immigrants-were-finally-forced-to-reckon-with-the-bigotry-of-americas-elite/ quote:My immigrant community was privileged in that way. And because of that, we never really worried about mass immigration raids. We weren’t punitively targeted by cops just because of the color of our skin. We weren’t seen as a terrorist threat and targeted for infiltration and entrapment by the FBI. We never turned on the TV to see ourselves dehumanized or branded as a threat from within — as enemies of the American way of life. Looking back on all the petty — and not so petty — crime we got into as kids, I’m amazed by how leniently the cops dealt with us.

Pener Kropoopkin posted:If Democrats think of themselves as the default party of power, then elections are always theirs to loose. So they are actively choosing to lose over doing politics. another issue with the democrats is that they don't actually want quite a few of the groups in their coalition to have more engagement, because it might lead to the end of the party as it stands now more involvement with and politicization of unions is at least going to lead a desire for social democracy, which the democrat party is still deathly afraid of. god forbid if any of the unions have openly socialist or communist leanings. reinvigorated Black politics at the local level leads to a risk of a Cooperation Jackson or Black Panther Party springing up, confronting local Democrat power structures and funders it's safer for the consultants to do their job of losing elections

Ukraine and Brazil were what I was thinking of as examples. on the other hand, poo poo like the CIA interventions in Iran, Chile, and Venezuela dragged on for years without any big success. Iran and Chile eventually did suffer coups of course.

From Yovanovitch's opening statement. Please read it, it's bonkers. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/read-ukraine-amb-marie-yovanovitchs-opening-statement-impeachment/story?id=67039338 quote:My late parents did nothave the good fortune to come of age in a free society. My father fled the Soviets before ultimately finding refuge in the United States. My mother’s family escaped the USSR after the Bolshevik revolution, and she grew up stateless in Nazi Germany, before eventually making her way to the United States. Were Yovanovitch's parents fascists? Fleeing the USSR isn't damning, but a stopover in Nazi Germany very much fits a pattern seen with other Ukrainian fascist exiles. quote:The U.S. is the most powerful country in the history of the world, in large part because of our values. And our values have made possible the network of alliances and partnerships that buttresses our own strength. Ukraine, with an enormous landmass and a large population, has the potential to be a significant commercial and political partner for the U.S., as well as a force-multiplier on the security side. Listening to her talk up US values at exact same time the State Department is giving cover for a racist, reactionary coup in Bolivia makes it extremely obvious that none of the State Department ghouls are friends of working people.

incredible that the Democrats are impeaching Trump, "President Crimes," for leaning on a country to investigate a clear case of corruption. at least we know they'll never investigate the corruption of Trump's adult kids. apparently looking into the corruption of political opponents' children is off limits and an impeachable offense.

if impeachment isn't sent on to the Senate, Tulsi's idea of censure laying out a laundry list of Trump's crimes makes more sense I thought her proposal was dumb initially, but if the Democrats are just going to use impeachment as a censure, they should have just passed a censure this is all dumb and pointless, but at least that would be a pointless gesture that probably wouldn't backfire as much
