really queer Christmas posted:I will say that a lib friend who I've been trying to slowly radicalize had his brain broken in the good way from this poo poo. he doesn't see the system as redeemable anymore and wants some kind of massive change. relatedly, 1) leftists tend to believe our institutions, while hopelessly broken, can be either changed or dismantled provided a mass of people organize and mobilize. 2) having a mass of people realize that brokenness is probably a necessary condition for that aforementioned organizing and mobilizing. libs only understand leftist views up to the "institutions are broken" part of statement 1. then when leftists are glad, because of statement 2, that people are having to face reality, libs are at a loss as to why it's occuring and attribute all kinds of weird beliefs and motivations to leftists

Panzeh posted:Or is it the delusion that entrenched interests will allow a socialist to be elected or even nominated in a presidential election? the best explanation ive found yet, like in the sense of specifying the actual mechanisms thru which it happens, of how capital controls political parties is thomas ferguson's investment theory of political parties. he also details under which conditions a majority of people can exercise control over the political system, and why that so infrequently occurs. based on that theory, certain changes in structural conditions of elections recently (like last decade) have slightly decreased the barriers to majoritarian rule, though it is still very difficult. the key paper is "Party Realignment And American Industrial Structure: The Investment Theory of Political Parties in Historical Perspective." his INET whitepaper applying that to the 2016 primary and general elections might be of interest wrt determining whether a socialist can gain nomination. especially with the stuff he says about bernie campaign. he has two books 1) The Golden Rule and 2)Right Turn which are good as hell. but only that one paper and thr INET whitepaper are must-reads, on the subject of your post, imo

babypolis posted:if anything that gormless gently caress comey had way more of a role than anyone else in deciding the outcome there was a late surge in the polls towards trump which put him over the edge, so i can understand why people think comey decided the outcome. but that surge is better explained by an absolutely massive flood of dark money, one which flowed into republican senate campaigns all across the country during the final weeks in a seemingly coordinated fashion. it brought a lot of trump-skeptical republicans out to the polls that might have otherwise stayed home, resulting in a kind of reverse coattails effect that put him over the edge. this happened at the same time as the comey statement, so nerds like nate silver have hyped the theory that if it werent for comey hillary wouldve won. but i think they're missing the real reason for that late bump in polling edit: the paper i got this from: https://www.ineteconomics.org/uploa...-8-Jan-2018.pdf start reading at pg. 19 if you want specifics on spending late in the campaign Finicums Wake has issued a correction as of 06:40 on Mar 27, 2019 |

Dumb Lowtax posted:Yeah most people have not heard that, I certainly haven't until now. At least w.r.t. a late surge. But most will have heard of dark foreign money being trickled in more regularly towards the GOP afaik no one in the media has reported on it. i edited my post to include the paper it's from after you replied, if you're interested in reading more on it. i only came across it because i follow that political scientist's work, and read some of the other stuff put out by the institute for new economic thinking. but even voxoid types who try to cover more academic analyses of current events have totally neglected that guy's findings, despite him being one of the leading scholars of money's influence on politics for decades now. of course, covering him would force liberals to re-examine their worldview, so lol...

"dark money" means untraceable. and of the ways he categorizes contributions to the campaigns, it's broken down by size of contribution, or the industry it comes from, rather than foreign vs. domestic. but enough of that paper i linked, despite being written like a year ago, is devoted to debunking the russia hysteria that i think it's safe to say the author doesn't think that the late surge in money was from russia

comedyblissoption posted:the other issue that would not be reflected in polls are republicans disenfranchising voters through shenanigans like voter roll purges, voter id, and loving with democratic voter precincts to make it more difficult to vote that mostly goes unreported in any depth by liberals in their defense, the house Dems' big bill HR 1 has a bunch of voting rights stuff in it, as well as some good campaign finance measures (or at least as good as you can get w/o a liberal supreme court overturning all kinds of poo poo). of course, they were never able to put that front and center in the public's consciousness because of, among other things, the russia investigation. but still, if they're dems can turn their attention to actually good poo poo like that, they might have a chance in 2020 and maybe we aren't all doomed Finicums Wake has issued a correction as of 07:27 on Mar 27, 2019 |
