If Subaru has the sloth witch factor now, does that mean he has a choice between time loop or body swap when he dies?

The tavern girl?

Man she really didn't leave an impact on me at all unlike Beetlejuice. I looked her up in the wiki and I still don't remember her.

I'm the opposite. I felt like the tavern arc was like a quarter of the first season, but looking it up on wiki it was only three episodes.

It's entirely possible that Roswaal knows about return by death. He owns a forbidden library occupied by someone with close personal knowledge of the witch's cult and Subaru gives off a noticeable witch smell. On top of that in the final timeline Subaru acts in a way that suggests he had prior knowledge of events so its not unreasonable that Roswaal, being who he is, might deduce what is going on with this eccentric weirdo who showed up on his doorstep out of the blue.

Or he might have been directly involved in summoning Subaru, given that he has done a lot of meticulous pre-planning that started before Subaru even arrived.

Roswaal doesn't seem like someone who looses his cool over a dead servant.

I took it to mean that Roswaal and Beatrice's relation to one another is tenuous at best and not really based around any kind of mutual friendship. Beatrice was protecting a guest she had known for less than a week and who they suspected of killing Rem, and she appeared ready to use violence to keep him safe.

Also from the way Roswaal is presented throughout the series, both in dialog and just body language/actions I had assumed he was extremely powerful, on the same footing as Beatrice and Puck. He certainly behaves and is treated as if that is the case.

Beatrice being ready to throw down over someone she's known a week and doesn't really like is more a function of just how seriously pacts are taken by some in this world. She couldn't care less about Subaru's well being but a pact it a pact, even one you made halfheartedly to get a pest to leave you alone.

Is it really the case that Beatrice doesn't like Subaru? I get the feeling Subaru wouldn't have such a knack for finding her if she didn't on some level like the attention? Lots of people like it when you check in on them and say hi but quickly have their "social energy" expended and shoo you out.
She has warmed up to him now but keep in mind when he made that pact in that timeline he was still new and on everyone's nerves.

Nitrousoxide posted:

she probably has a soft spot for him. I think it was stated in one of the more recent episodes that he is one of only a very few people who can reliably get her door to show up.
I might be misremembering, but the door is always at a random location hidden among the hundreds in Roswaal's massive estate, so finding it consistently should be statistically impossible. I always took finding her room at will to be a weird luck ability innate to Subaru, akin to Kazuma for KonoSuba always being able to take panties with his steal skill.

This episode was a pretty big info dump!

We learned that there is a book of true prophecy that exists, and that Roswaal has knowledge of its contents. We also learned that Subaru is part of this prophecy as "That person" and is important enough that the normally aloof Beatrice will become his ally. Based on her personality this seem like a kinda big deal. We already know she would hardcore fight Roswaal and the rest of the house over a simple promise to protect Subaru, so being ally status seems huge.
My predictions:
*This confirms that Roswaal is all about that long term planning and explains why his plans included a weirdly dressed goofy gently caress up who showed up out of no where. It is why he was so calm when he explained that Subaru would make everything work just for Emilia's sake. This seemed stupid at the time but makes sense if it is based on prophecy.
*The nature of the save points is based on this book. Subaru just bungles his way though a bunch of timelines until the results match what is in the book. Then a save point is established. That might mean there is no 'bad save' where he hosed up enough that he can't fix a truly bad result. It also might mean that he really doesn't have that much control over the final timeline and is just doing what the prophecy wants. This would also mean that his actions might be for a greater evil if that is the ultimate goal of the prophecy.
*Roswaal doesn't know the exact mechanics of return by death, but he does know the final result from the gospel and that is what he bases his plans on. He always gives a knowing smile when Subaru talks about things he normally shouldn't have any knowledge of.
*Beatrice's mother is the witch of envy, and she works toward whatever her master plan is based on her gospel.
*The new OP gave us a glimpse of the witch of envy. (1:59 of this episode on crunchyroll)

Also can we talk about how awful the existence of Subaru is? The anime doesn't convey it that well, but in the LN is explains that there is no gap between horrific death and reset. That his dying is just as traumatic as regular dying even though he knows he reincarnates. He went from slowly ripped apart by bunnies to laying next to Emilia as on one uninterrupted chain of events.

And in general they really haven't done anything worse than most pantheons did.
If you think about it, every victim of the bunnies dies just as brutally as Subaru did. The villagers, Emilia, Otto, and probably thousands of others. Subjecting huge groups of people to slow dismemberment and even being burrowed through seems a bit worse than Zeus being really horny for mortals.

Wars that never end, because she went around punching all the fallen soldiers so they would just get back up and start fighting again.

There are side stories about what happens when Subaru peaces out of the main plot at various points. He can get pretty drat far, even discounting the mostly-a-joke "Harem King" one.

Would be funny is he lived a full uneventful life with Rem and died of old age peacefully in his bed surrounded by loved ones, then goes immediately back to the last save point. Now that I think about it that is probably what would happen, I don't think he gets to nope out of his destiny.

My hypothesis on Roswaal's goal: Make Emillia more and more dependent on Subaru. Isolate her until he is literally the only thing she has. Make it so severe that she resents any attention he gives to anyone else, in other words she becomes envious of anyone else but her receiving his attention. She showed a little sign of this with one of her last lines before he died, "I only want you to push yourself too hard for me." All the while she had the witch's aura in her eyes and the same crazed look as Satella did when she appeared.

Roswaal's goal is groom Emillia into a vessel for the witch of envy to return to.

At this point I'm assuming there is some Roswaal fuckery going on that is keeping Puck sealed in his effort to further isolate Emilia.

When Grouchio is off their probe they have some info from the authors episode commentary to provide some clarification about this episodes events.

I think one thing to consider is to remember the Geuse said directly in the episode that he lives a very long time, to the point that the hundreds of years old elf auntie he views as a child. I think it's being strongly hinted these events took place a long time ago.

Speculation: I think Geuss's apparent aging is probably due to whatever drove him mad. I don't think he hid anything or actually has any kind of nefarious intent, I think whatever momentous events are occurring eventually broke him and the prophecy or whatever it is written in the gospel became his refuge and his sanity slipped away.

My speculation His aging might just be normal aging. We know he can body hop, and that ability isn't related to his sloth authority. Maybe the young Geuse we see here isn't his original body, and his long life is from continued body hoping and not having a single long lasting lifespan. It could also be the present day geezer Geuse is a different body from past Geuse, one he has been in long enough to change his hair to better fit his past body.

So, is Emelia having access to that key supposed to be something that we know the reason for at this point? Have I missed something or is this going to be expanded on later, I presume the latter because Pandora said she would be back for it?

With a name like Pandora one has to assume that she will get to open her box at some point here.

We know she has a connection to Satella, who I am assuming is what is sealed away by the scary looking door. I just figured her being the key master had to do with that.

This story is told from the perspective of Ryuzu Meyer, who saw Echidna as both a maternal figure and savior. It could be she was never able to look Echidna in the eyes out of respect and meekness so any of her memories wouldn't include them.

Wait, I thought 'That person' meant a romantic lover/soulmate. Betty described it as "Someone who will put me before anyone else." But Echidna's specific description of that person was "Someone suitable for inheriting my knowledge will come for you." So why couldn't Subaru be that person without having to betray his feelings for Emilia? Heck Roswaal sounded like a pretty ideal that person as he was regularly in the library anyways. Also gently caress you Roswaal if you were going to use the library at least keep her company for a bit even if just as a kindness for your wifu's daughter/creation.
