dude had a world-class voice that he spent most of his career using to sing about dictators and perverts and executions. he did an entire collaboration album with Sunn O))) a couple of years ago in his 70s. he once wrote a song as Elvis Presley mourning the death of his twin fetus. this sucks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGGqnFF0rCA Criminal Minded fucked around with this message at 09:59 on Mar 25, 2019 |

drat. He's probably a curio in the US, but he was basically huge in the UK. Apparently he participated in the making of the soundtrack for Natalie Portman-starred movie Vox Lux. Guess I'll have to catch that. No. 1 Callie Fan fucked around with this message at 13:41 on Mar 25, 2019 |

I first heard "it's raining today" at an animation festival, playing behind a creepy as poo poo claymation video of starved corpses dancing in soiled bridal gowns, interspersed with flapping mountains of flesh. "huh" I thought, wrongly assuming that it was the director who had added this uncomfortable discordant strings note over the top of the track, "that's pretty cool". So I looked up the track and about three months later he was my favourite artist and his work had introduced me to related folk like Jacques Brel. He seemed pretty bored with living, though? maybe he's glad to be dead.

i clicked the link in th OP and i cannot understate how awful that poo poo sounded. Like a middle school choir director singing off pitch with way too much vibrato often with no music or rhythm in the background. This garbage made me irl angry

I think my favorite songs of his were all Brel covers but they were still very very good. "I swear on the wet head of my first case of gonorrhea" is just a great lyric anyway you slice it.

This is apparently what Scott Walker considered close to perfect. I guess people will differ, but just goes to show what a range of genres he's willing to travel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_NIop72vis
