I got you.
Yeah, if this came to me as an editor I'd just use the word "men" but with pointed emphasis. Men, y'know? And make sure the VO director has it marked up for the performance.

I also really like Tenko's utterly disgusted face though.

Like all the Danganronpa games, V3 was localised by NIS America (or NISA) and they only make bad localisation choices. It's all they do.

Also, some people suggested 'menace' for Tenko.

Miu and Tenko went from two of my least favourite to my faves pretty drat fast. Actually most of the cast had a fairly bad first impression in this game but i ended up liking almost all of them towards the end.

I do like Tenko! Although some people don't-I saw one guy who jokingly called her the Ultimate Feminazi, which is so wrong on so many levels.

MIU! Miu is probably the #1 source of dirty jokes in this game, and it's glorious.

I think I remember incorrectly calling Mahiru a misandrist back when DR2 LP was ongoing due to a massive misunderstanding of her character.

I wasn't challenging the series to actually make one, dammit. :(

Hopefully it's not too overdone and there's more to her character. Everyone saying good things makes me hopeful.

On a different note, this is a great reaction and Miu is very weird. Kinda like Toko only more depraved. Somehow.

So far, I think I have to say I hate all of these characters so far.

Of course, I hated the casts of DR 1 and 2 when they were introduced as well, these characters just take time to grow on me I guess.

On the subject of translated terminology, I'm also curious about the Japanese equivalents of "mage" and "magician", i.e. what implies actual spell-casting vs. stage performance.

Just from what we've already seen, she's also got burning kung-fu Neo-Aikido spirit. That's two strong traits, one positive and one negative, and the misandry is only annoying in the dub, because as mentioned Tenko literally never uses any words but "degenerate" and "male" to refer to Those No-Good Dirty Sicko Men.

Compared with Mahiru, whose primary character trait was "photographer who has her poo poo together" and only occasionally displayed "quick to assume the worst about guys", Tenko's interactions are just more interesting overall.

A cursory look at a dictionary implies that the words for sleight-of-hand stage magic (手品 and 奇術) vs. fireballs-and-pentagrams magic (魔法) are impossible to mistake for one another spelling- and pronunciation-wise, but I don't know enough to say that the difference in common usage is clear-cut.

It really is weird how Mahiru was so... normal? Most of the Ultimates seem like comic book characters outside of the protagonists, but I can't recall Mahiru being terribly quirky at all.

YOU'VE GOT THAT WRONG!
Mahiru is one of my favourite Danganronpa characters for exactly that reason. Everyone in Danganronpa 2 was so wacky it became slightly exhausting, but Mahiru felt very real and helped to keep things grounded. I was very sorry to lose her so early, but at least Hajime also managed to be a grounding force.

Tenko had an automatic disadvantage in getting into my esteem, because she naturally invites comparison with Mahiru, so my immediate reaction was to resent her for being a different character.

My other first impressions of the characters we've met (I'm looking back at the notes I made when playing the demo, to be sure I'm not getting ahead of where we are):

- Kaede's a fun protagonist. She bounces well off the rest of the cast, and I like that she keeps up the grand Danganronpa tradition of quietly going '??? these people are so weird' in her thoughts.
- Being a detective really seems like it's going to make Shuichi a target.
- I don't trust Rantaro. I'm pretty sure he knows more than he's letting on.
- I like Tsumugi for being a big nerd, although I'm not a huge fan of her voice acting.
- Himiko's introduction didn't make much of an impression on me beyond 'she sounds really bored', but I did like that Kaede's immediate reaction was 'hey, could you send us back in time to before we ended up in this place?' - she really seemed to want to believe Himiko could actually do magic!
- Miu is great fun. She also has the best voice clip in the entire Danganronpa series; most of the clips that play when the camera pans to a character are generic things like 'I don't know' or 'Hmm' or 'Yeah!', so I broke out into startled laughter the first time the camera panned to Miu and she came out with 'gently caress ALL Y'ALL.'

This is a lot of returning voice actors from DR2. I wonder how much of it is just the studio reusing the same staff and how much is some potential twist later on down the line.

That's why I liked her so much. At least Gundam had an excuse (he thought he was a comic book villain and it was awesome). So far DRV3 has lost me with every character being too wacky. Also NotNagito is giving me the creeps.

Tenko's whole "eww boys" thing was way more annoying in the demo than the final game, I thought. Like I get they had limited space to introduce all the characters and the concept and the whole gameplay loop, but it was seriously just about every single line she had.

hope's peak picks a new ultimate lucky student every single year, so yeah I assume that's allowed.

Well, come to think of it idk if this game has anything to do with hope's peak so... idk who even decides someone is an ultimate if not hope's peak, but yeah

e: full disclosure, i've played 3 chapters of this game but i dont know any of the overarching mysteries

Also, although not really discussed. I believe the Kyosuke's (Yu from Dangan Ronpa 3 Anime) title as Ultimate Student Council President is one given to the Student Council President of Hope's Peak. Generally I imagine they don't put the same titles in the same year unless it's part of their Ultimate Talent, however that doesn't mean they can't find more than one at a time. It's one of the Nuances lost in the translation but the title is meant to specifically be about High School Students, once you leave Hope's Peak your title is more a badge of honor than an accurate statement of your adult reality, for the most part.

Of course the extreme nature of several of the Talents we've seen in the past make it pretty likely that they are the Ultimate in that field High School Student or otherwise.

Reminder that when he did his fantranslation, Orenronen translated it as "Super High School Level" because that is what it is and implies. They are incredily, absurdly good... for a high school student.

Ultimate, meanwhile, kinda captured that but also implies the best person in that field period.

Both can have duplicates (though the latter having a duplicate implies they're even more the best than the previous person).

I admit I’ve just been waiting for an LP of this game, rather than wanting to play it myself. And two of the three major reasons are right here in this update. Aside from Rantaro and Saihara, I didn’t find any of the characters that interesting and actively hated four of them. Two of them are Miu and Tenko. The other two we haven’t seen yet, but I’m absolutely sure the fourth one I’ll be called a blasphemer for hating, even though it’s more of a “love to hate” thing.

Seriously, though, Miu gives me flashbacks to Hiyoko, who I absolutely DESPISED. I wonder if THIS one will get any redeeming qualities? Hiyoko sure didn’t.

Miu gang for life, that chick's hilarious.

I'm excited to see how a revisit changes/doesn't change my enjoyment and interpretation of characters. Especially Tenko and Himiko. I also really like how--compared to the previous DR protagonists--Kaede seems to be more down to give people the benefit of the doubt for their weird poo poo so far.
