Grounder language going from "a natural-seeming devolution of language following a nuclear holocaust" to "lol you're speaking the language my 10 year old daughter made up" is midichlorians level dumb. Otherwise I am enjoying this season as always.

Astroman posted:I buy it as a good retcon because I remember in S1 thinking 100 years was way to short a time for language to change that much, and it was dumb and if they wanted to have a massive language shift they should have expanded the timeline to like 500 years or something. Interestingly, in reading more about it, the creator of the language has some thoughts which I guess do align with the "a seemingly random person pushed a language through a group": https://dedalvs.tumblr.com/post/104195916604/im-confused-about-the-grounder-language-in-the quote:The last piece of the puzzle is a bit of fiction we concocted. Given that we’re in a small geographical area, there are features that are present in the modern language that are a direct result of conscious change on the part of early speakers. In the chaos that prevailed in the early days, there were direct innovations created so that survivors could determine if someone new they came across was one of them or wasn’t. Those that organized early developed vocabulary that would allow them to easily identify other group members—in addition to being able to communicate with group members without giving away what they were talking about. It was basically a code. Many of these old code words eventually became the new words for what they referred to—defeating the original purpose of the code, of course, but by then it no longer mattered. The fittest had survived.

Can't believe we didn't get an "End of Book Two". Season 5 ended so well, I was hoping they'd be able to really stick the landing, but the ending itself was... fine? It was disappointing though, after all the time spent on humanity and human nature, it all got hand-waved away "because aliens". Also, Bellamy getting chumped like that was a disappointing end to the character.

muscles like this! posted:I still think they should have said to hell with logic and just made it so that transcendence was retroactive as well and made it so that everyone who ever lived got in. They already had to play loose with it to save Emori. It felt like they were going to make the argument that Bellamy could go either because a) he saw the people who had transcended beforehand or b) the translation Levitt quoted was also wrong. But really, if they wanted to go all out, they should've just done this:

It'd also be weird to be on Sanctum and/or Bardo just surrounded by glowing crystalline structures that used to be members of your species.

Gaj posted:Oh god Im dumb I forgot they slow boated it to the new world. But now that just makes me ask why the Second Dawn group didnt re-colonize Earth since it seems it would be easier to expand on a planet that uh, isnt covered in Biological weapons. If the backdoor pilot was any indication, it's because they portal-ed off of Earth shortly after they got in the bunker.

Open Source Idiom posted:It seems to be the CW's process on getting spinoffs to happen. Just sort of shove some new hot people in a random episode and maybe commission a pilot off the back of that, since it worked for The Flash. Except The Flash was a whole different kettle of fish, given that he was already established IP, etc. The Vampire Diaries to The Originals was basically the latter. The Originals to Legacies as well. Definitely the way The 100 should've done it, especially since they had a ton chances to do so.

INH5 posted:I haven't watched The Vampire Diaries, but I'm guessing that the backstory of the spinoff characters was more consistently presented? Glancing at the Fan Wiki, it seems like the concept of "The Originals" was first presented in Season Two, so fairly early on? The main cast of The Originals are recurring characters starting in Season 2 that eventually get their backdoor pilot in Season 4.
