Oh right, signs! I loved naming features on the landscape.

I do that when I'm playing multi Civ games, too. I like to name features near my enemies rude names and wait for them to notice. Oh, you found Lake Fuckface?

I always liked that little cheat you could enter for an event where the mob will offer you a one-time payment. If you take it, nothing bad happens. If you don't, the Sim FBI shows up, says it was a sting, and congratulates you for not cheating by giving you a castle that megaboosts happiness and is an even bigger cheat.

I am pretty sure there was a cheat in SC2K that resulted in a launch arco dancing across your screen wearing a bowler hat and cane.

Neat, I remember always having to bulldoze them whenever they sprung up because the whole game mechanic reason they exist is they spawn in high land value residential areas and don't pay anything in property taxes

psst you wanna do a communism?
I remember in school we there was this Future Cities thing where schools competed in developing cities with a real model, but also a digital model created with either SimCity 2000 or 3000.

I ended up getting Sim City 4 and have to this day never figured out how to make a good bustling city :smith:

I also had Roller Coaster Tycoon, Zoo Tycoon (oddly underrated or not as talked up), and SimAnt/Park/Safari/Town (I think there was a big pack that came with them all)

Sim games are cool, pisses me off how underwhelming Jurassic World Evolution was instead of just being an upscaled Jurassic Park Operation Genesis

What was the problem, if you can recall?

One thing which took me forever to realize was that a city needs much less than you'd expect. Power, water, a few garbage tiles, and a meager fire station. I used to plop all services down at the start which seemed like the right thing to do, as mayor rating would go up. But soon, I'd have astronomical monthly expenses supporting a low density farming town with pitiful tax revenue. Just keep building what the RCI asks of you, then maybe splurge on some surplus income with another service. Go back to building what RCI demands and repeat the same cycle. Eventually that surplus margin will grow wider and you'll be able to shower your sims with top of the line medical care, education, and safety services, all while staying solvent.

If you're tired of seeing apartments and want grandiose skyscrapers, you'll have to start a new city in an adjacent tile and connect them both via road. I forget how exactly why it has to be done this way, but once you get the neighboring cities up to a healthy level with high enough population, you can get your "main" city to get the big high risers and stuff. You can also offload RCI demand you don't want in your city to a neighboring tile and get the benefits too.

My first step in SC2000 is to create a completely flat map, then raise a hill on on side and cover that with water so when the game proper starts I can just keep adding hydro dams as needed.

SimCopter was basically the same. Garbage as a game by every metric but fun to explore your city, and a lot of easter eggs, iirc you could spot a UFO flying above the city?

One thing Cities: Skylines is missing is the quirky charm of SimCity, at best you get some funny names but the not-twitter feed gets old immediately, the radio stations have nothing on GTA or even Theme/Two Point Hospital, and everything else is played more like a model trainset. 2000 had the silly mouth noises sound effects, mad lib newspapers, variety in special buildings, Maxisman and Neil Gaiman quotes, SNES had Bowser, Dr Wright and the Mario statue, and while I haven't played 3000 it seems to have its quirks too.

Funny thing, once time I started the Washington DC scenario with citywide riots, and MaxisMan showed up and cleared them all right away.

This goddamn thread got me playing simcity 3000 again and I've stayed up way too late playing it the past several nights. gently caress.

It definitely has the most charm and personality of the simcity games I think. The advisers and petitioners all have a lot of character, there's humor in the writing (like the news ticker), and somehow the whole game feels really upbeat. I might actually prefer it to SC4, despite all the extra features and various quality of life improvements SC4 added (like showing the service radius of buildings while you plop them, not having that in SC3000 sucks). But SC4's complexity makes it hard to wrap your head around the entire game, I never felt like I truly mastered it. SC3000 is a lot more approachable I think.

Not only could you spot a UFO you could shoot it down if you had the attack helicopter, which would get you a lot of cash.

For anyone interested, Lucasarts had a pretty funny simcity type game.

You're in charge of building housing for Heaven and Hell. Each building has a description of what kind of reward or punishment the occupants will be spending their life with. Main one I remember is Hell having a gluttony building where the people feed each other the human centipede way through hoses.

Does Cities Skylines give its cities as much personality as the Sim City franchise? My favorite part of any of the Maxis games was the tongue in cheek humor they somehow infused into every pixel, like the game was secretly having fun at your expense.
