Farewell, Millennial Lifestyle Subsidy

quote:

A few years ago, while on a work trip in Los Angeles, I hailed an Uber for a crosstown ride during rush hour. I knew it would be a long trip, and I steeled myself to fork over $60 or $70.

Instead, the app spit out a price that made my jaw drop: $16.

Experiences like these were common during the golden era of the Millennial Lifestyle Subsidy, which is what I like to call the period from roughly 2012 through early 2020, when many of the daily activities of big-city 20- and 30-somethings were being quietly underwritten by Silicon Valley venture capitalists.

Here’s a weird gen x era depiction of gay youth, “What if I’m Gay?”

I might possibly be in the background somewhere, they shot this after school special at my high school and I volunteered to be an extra.

I like my friends’ weird and or dumb tattoos  why not?

I’m reminded of when I took my 80 year old leftist dad to a dive bar. Some general talk about current events was going on and one of the old regulars goes “I’m 70 years old, and I don’t care” Then my dad says “well I’m 80 and I DO care!”

It was pretty funny seeing the other guy backpedal and try not to seem like a selfish jerk

E- obviously has nothing to do with tattoos or anything really, I’m old, just let me ramble

We were born
Born in the fifties

My mother cried
When president Kennedy died
She said it was the communists
But I knew better

Would they drop the bomb on us
While we made love on the beach
We were the class they couldn't teach
'Cause we knew better

We were born
Born in the fifties

They screamed
When the Beatles sang
And they laughed when the King fell down the steps
Oh they should've known better

Oh we hated our Aunt
Then we messed in our pants
Then we lost our faith and prayed to the TV
Oh we should've known better

We were born
Born in the fifties

We freeze like statues on the pages of history
Living was never like this when we took all those G.C.E.'s
Oh you opened the door for us
And then you turned to dust

You don't understand us
So don't reprimand us
We're taking the future
We don't need no teacher

British boomers don’t so much go in for prime rib, for them it’s pork belly which is a huge slab of very fatty meat roasted or cut into slices. They can harp on about it for hours, and it’s much much worse than “steaks I got for cheap over the years” chat, because it’s a loving disgusting slab of fat to everyone else, because they don’t season it

I could easily be wrong but I think it’s the opposite in the US and pork belly is more popular with younger people than old, it seems pretty trendy these days

It's like only in the last couple decades that not being a dumb shithead about obliterating your body when you're in your 20s became a thing.

In my work there’s lots of toxic materials that could easily be optional but using them is seen as the “right way” to do things. It’s considered the old school approach and I always hope that as younger people get into the industry that things will improve but I’m not seeing it. The younger people want to show off their skills which sadly means standing around in a toxic cloud much of the time. I wish I could find a way to get them to help change things but when I suggest that people be less self destructive it ends up sounding to them like I’m asking them to be amateurish or something. People literally believe that they’ve built up an immunity to carcinogens.

Boomer on nextdoor wrote an entire manifesto against a local diner because he was charged $4 for his side roll that was supposed to be included with his meals cost.

It's totally obvious that the waitress was new and confused and made an innocent error but in his mind the diner that he's been going to for 10 years is out to get him now and he's "never going back there again!"

Not sure if it’s a generational thing but I notice in lots of reviews on Seamless people say things like “3 out of 5 stars. Usually I love this place but this time the noodles were cold.” Like their rating shouldn’t be based on their average experience, it’s about the last minor thing that pissed them off.
