i run a landscaping company and boomers like to call me thinking im their municipal forestry department. actually is quite a loss for me because it'll take them like 3-5 minutes of long winded poo poo to explain their needs, and then they get mad at me when I explain that i'm not the City and I can't just prune and treat trees in a city park

i hate arguing about music but, the whole thing with boomers and "their" music is that the 60's truly were a renaissance-like breakthrough for writing and recording music. boomers were, i think almost definitely, the first generation to have easy access to affordable mass-produced instruments and the result was pretty crazy, in the sense that it completely usurped a lot of prior conceptions about what music is, what musicians are. also you can hate grandpa for his Pink Floyd shirt all you want, but when you consider the choice was between Pink Floyd and Pat Boone....maybe give a little credit.

Ya know, what gets lost in the "Greatest Generation" thing is that many of those men and women came home pretty broken, with PTSD, and their children, the Boomers, definitely suffered a bit from this. But PTSD has gotten entwined with war-on-terror politics, and so we just pretend WW2 vets never had it because of how great they were.

When I worked tree removal I had to deal with such insufferable poo poo in regards to lawns. Boomer MBA types thinking I can get a dozen dead trees out of a backyard without a hint of wear and tear on the grass. A guy threatening to withhold payment on a massive removal, threatening that he "knows a lot of people" because the grass got thinned out in one spot completely out of sight. Mental breakdowns over loving grass all the drat time. Meanwhile it's hard manual labor and you're just happy you didn't get injured today. I have a million boomer complaints working in that business; I was on the forefront.

Good music is so localized nowadays. It's stupid to say rock n roll is dead. Some say hip hop is dead, that is stupid too. The reason 60's/70's rock music has such a golden aura around it is because for the most part, the artists were doing as they pleased. Frank Zappa had a great observation about how in the early 60's, there were these old farts running things who just kinda threw their hands up and went "ehhh if that's what the kids want! here's your studio, your paycheck, I've got a happy hour I've never missed, cya!" Now music is controlled, we can feel it deep down that the only reason anything is getting national attention is because a group of capitalists decided that was what was appropriate for us all to hear.

Small acts of defiance everyday... When our captured soldiers were P.O.W.s in Vietnam, they were subject to strict rules by their North Vietnamese captors. However, through small, daily acts of defiance, they were able to slowly break down their captors and eventually gain more freedoms within the camp. I agree, that through small acts of defiance by the public, more and more LEOs will see the futility of attempting to enforce these stupid little draconian laws. Laws only work when people generally follow the law. When NO ONE follows the law, the law will be rescinded (or else the government will look impotent). The best small acts of defiance in the near term: 1.) Sit down at your favorite restaurant 2.) Hang out with friends at a local watering hole 3.) Barbecue at the beach 4.) Take the wife on a walk in a public area It’s not about severity of action, but volume. The more people that do it, the more it becomes commonplace and accepted. America was born on rebellion, it’s in our DNA. Tonight I walked through downtown with a nice Cuban cigar and frequented several stores for “non-essential” errands. Why? Because I can. Gonna gain back our way of life. One day at a time.

Bonzo posted:In music, at the turn of the 20th century, it was still common to take a common melody and add your own lyrics. This is how you adapted a song to fit your town or village or whatever. Blues and early folk/country music do this often so I can see Chuck "stealing" for his own. Seems like most of the golden age rock bands didn't even look into "creative rights" for themselves. The "talent" side of things moved so fast they didn't have the business planned out, or were too busy raking in the cash to care -- one or the other, or both depending on what group we're talking about. Even if "give credit where credit is due" seems really simple, the legal realities of 4-5 musicians in their 20's making exorbitant amounts of cash off of 3 minute songs took some.....fine tuning.
