Iron Crowned posted:One thing I've noticed about olds at work is that they tend to get put in a corner to do busy work until they retire, because it's literally easier to let them do gently caress-all and collect a check than it is force them to adapt or shitcan them for being a negative asset because they've been working here for 35 years. the best part is how they let a job linger for 10 years until the person retires, but once they retire the position ceases to exist, so nobody younger can get hired, because the position was useless.

The self-checkout things are very common in Australia and they’re constantly adjusting how precise the weights are. More precision lowers theft but causes more errors and pisses customers off more. Lower precision raises theft but makes customers happier and speeds up the rate of checkout. They tweak it up and down all the time to try and find the profit sweet spot. They also only exist as an excuse to lower staff costs by firing half the workforce, so it’s your sacred duty to steal as much as you can get away with at all times. Scan everything as potatoes.

the half-true story of monopoly which owns is: it was created as an anti-capitalist educational tool and distributed for free capitalists stole the IP, didn’t change it at all and distributed it for profit (the real story is more boring than that, everybody got paid, but the vibe is the same)

Play posted:I prefer to think of these people as victims, despite how incredibly stupid they are. Or perhaps because of it, they're stupid enough that they can't be blamed for the outcome and instead blame the people influencing them like Fox News and the preident of the united states I had a school friend who was raised in a southern baptist family. Very ‘fire and brimstone, kill all the gays’ kind of church. We didn’t know the extent of it when we were teenagers, but when facebook became a thing he slowly became more and more vocal about his lovely views. We would all argue with his posts and we took a whole bunch of different approaches from very subtle to very blunt. By about 23-24 he never got invited anywhere because he had such cuntish opinions about everything and his church people became the only people he hung out with. Many times over the decade we would sit down and debate how much we could blame on his upbringing and how responsible he is for what he’d grown into. The last few of us who hadn’t cut him off blocked and deleted him on his 30th birthday. We had collectively decided that by the age of 30 you’ve decided who you are, and ignorance is no longer an excuse. Honestly, it was set in concrete at 25 and we were just deciding when to give up. People who are 50, 60? They’re not victims of anything. They can gently caress off.

I thought prepping sounded like an interesting hobby and I tried to find books on the topic by reasonable people but sadly there are none. All of them are bugfuck crazy. It’s sad because the basic premise sounds good but the reality is redneck power fantasy. I think the random and casual torture/murder of animals is a cultural relic left behind by christianity. In the bible nature was created to serve us/as our playground, and americans have always treated nature as an enemy to be fought. If you’ve seen The VVitch, that movie captures that puritan ‘gently caress nature’ vibe really well. Also think of how the woods are always deep/dark/evil places in fairy tales.

The satanic panic was linked to child abuse though. It was essentially that the scale of child abuse in churches and sports teams and stuff was finally being exposed and publicized in the media, and people’s brains couldn’t deal with it, so they created a secret evil organization to be behind it all. Secret satan cults are abducting children because there’s no way it could possibly be Father Fiddlehands down the road

Where do i sign up for the war on christmas?Pretty good posted:Boomers like to teach their kids Good Manners at the dining table, which means always keeping their legs tucked underneath their chair with their calves and thighs locked at as acute an angle as possible, lest they thoughtlessly invade their parents' personal space, and boomers like to stretch out their own legs, just stretch them way out, perfectly straight, and they like to wave em around erratically down there, and when their feet brush against your shins, they like to chide you for kicking them. For thirty years Boomers love to teach a version of etiquette that obsesses over details while completely missing the spirit. Treat other people with respect? No, we don't care about that, what's truly important is that you use the outer layer of cutlery before you use the inner layer of cutlery

l was listening to a radio show once that was prank calling people (shut up, i was at work or something) and they asked this one guy for a reference, regarding a person he’d never met for a job he didn’t know in a field he was unfamiliar with, and this guy concocted this elaborate web of lies on the spot to help a stranger get a job and knocked it out of the park.

Movie Idea: The zombie apocalypse except the president and Fox News keep insisting that it’s a hoax. The zombies are terrible and slow and ineffective but everyone dies because they’re so wilfully stupid about the whole thing. A bunch of people intentionally get bitten to prove that they aren’t snowflakes and own the libs. None of the doomsday preppers end up using their bunkers because they’re all republicans, but instead they form militias and storm democratic institutions looking for evidence of Qanon stuff. It writes itself!

I was reading a thing (australian data) about how people with STEM degrees were more likely to get a higher paying job immediately after university, but people with humanities or arts degrees are likely to be earning more in 10-20 years time. I can’t remeber if it was flat salary numbers or it was relatively wage growth. But the idea was that STEM students were trained for a specific job that currently exists and artsy students have a more general skill set and can more easily adapt to changes in the job market over time. The australian politicians who are constantly pushing to raise university fees, were mostly educated in the 70s and 80s when australian university was literally free to attend. Climbed that ladder then pulled it up.

There’s nothing inherently righteous about choosing the middle ground between two points. The compromise between ‘I’m going to kill ten people’ and ‘Please don’t do that’ is ‘I’m going to kill five people’. ‘Compromising with people is nice’ is one of those weird hollywood movie morals where you need to show some kind of growth in a character but you don’t want to grapple with actual ethics of any kind and you don’t want to rock any boats.

Imagine if US schools taught kids about the Korean war. That’d be so wild. “Well kids, we started a war, and as soon as it wasn’t going well we intentionally bombed civilian centres with napalm, killing three million non-combatants on purpose, then we bailed. It was much worse than what we did to Japan, and we installed a corrupt dictatorship while we were at it.” It’s incredible how nobody remembers what North Korea are mad at us for edit: apparently none of this is true, whoops 02-6611-0142-1 fucked around with this message at 23:37 on Nov 22, 2020 |
