Swimming round a bowl every day not being able to tell what day it is or even if it's night or day cause your light always stays on living in a plastic castle eating food pellets making GBS threads where you breathe repeat. what the hell fish. that's disgusting.

also I've never seen fish have sex with each other in the tank so I refuse to believe it happens. that's probably why they're so sad if fish can even experience emotions like that

I imagine some species of fish have a much more mechanical sense of needs than us and are content not to be terrified or hungry

I imagine some others have a natural need for novel stimuli and in captivity part of them will always be quietly starved and desperate

When an animal outsmarts another animal we think it's nature just being a badass. Somehow this doesn't apply to humans who outsmart all the dumb animals all the time.

It’s Official: Fish Feel Pain posted:

In the past 15 years, Braithwaite and other fish biologists around the world have produced substantial evidence that, just like mammals and birds, fish also experience conscious pain. “More and more people are willing to accept the facts,” Braithwaite says. “Fish do feel pain. It’s likely different from what humans feel, but it is still a kind of pain.”

At the anatomical level, fish have neurons known as nociceptors, which detect potential harm, such as high temperatures, intense pressure, and caustic chemicals. Fish produce the same opioids—the body’s innate painkillers—that mammals do. And their brain activity during injury is analogous to that in terrestrial vertebrates: sticking a pin into goldfish or rainbow trout, just behind their gills, stimulates nociceptors and a cascade of electrical activity that surges toward brain regions essential for conscious sensory perceptions (such as the cerebellum, tectum, and telencephalon), not just the hindbrain and brainstem, which are responsible for reflexes and impulses.

this is pretty obvious stuff if you're not already biased against recognizing it, imo

and the article tl;dr is that fish do feel pain but nobody is going to care about it because they're not cute and fuzzy like a baby cow

I read somewhere that acacia tress in Africa let loose some type of chemical that makes the trees around them release bitter compounds into their leaves. Giraffes move from tree to tree towards the wind when they eat.

I am not sure if they feel pain, but they're screaming and the other trees can hear it.

for me it's more that most complex animals feel pain, but if you can't prove a real mind exists then they don't think about it, dwell on it, get anxious or depressed (in our sense of the word) about it

when you read studies on lab mice they'll use the word depressed but they mean that it stopped socializing and ate cheese in a corner, it didn't start having panic attacks and start visualizing dying young

Give it a shot, I gave up wading in early spring a couple years ago cause they really are ridiculously cold here this time of year and I'm getting old. I just spent an hour respooling my reels and sorting out my tackle, this is my favorite time of year. Good luck when you get out there. Also I obviously don't know where you're from but it sounds like up north. Try a rapala jerkbait early on, it was getting crushed last year during April and may.
