Some people believe so. Others don't. The statistics have never been conclusive in either direction, with studies concluding in both directions (usually related to whoever funded it). The UK saw a spike in violence, including murder, for most of the decade following their gun ban and confiscation effort - during the same period it was plummeting in the US and Australia. Australia saw violence trend downward after their big 90's gun control effort - but that was already the case for the previous decade and it did not appear to accelerate the decline (currently suicide reduction is the more statistically supported argument there). Neither country had comparatively much violence or murder prior to the bans, and neither had much (but still had some, including with guns) afterwards. Less restrictive countries than those two like Sweden and (formerly) New Zealand had little violence, while many more restrictive countries like Russia, Brazil, and China had a lot more. There's a lot more going on than "do they legally have X weapon" when you talk about violence, murder, and mass killings.

If you twist the numbers you can sort of make it look like it doesn't work in other countries. Be honest with yourself.
