Last thread I am randomly in a James Bond mood and I wanted to post about it on here and ask questions but the last thread was locked. I hope nobody minds me making this, especially since the last thread did not exactly have the most extensive OP ever. I know very little about Bond and could not make a huge detailed post about the franchise even if I wanted to. I grew up in the 90s and early 2000s so Brosnan is my Bond. I've seen all his movies, although I haven't re-watched any of them in many years. I went back and watched some older stuff at various random points, namely Goldfinger and The Man With the Golden Gun. I also remember seeing on TV one Bond movie where a guy got shoved in a room and exploded. That scared me. I have pointedly not watched any post-Brosnan Bond films because I can be pretty bitchy and everyone saying Craig and his movies were the absolute greatest thing that ever happened to Bond irritated me. I'm sure Craig and his movies are fine but all the talk of a "hardcore gritty Bond" also turned me off. But I'm older now and also bored and just figured it's time I gave them a chance. Well, I'll be doing that after i re-watch all of Brosnan's films to see if my opinion has changed. I remember thinking: Goldeneye was great. The World Is Not Enough was okay. Didn't like Tomorrow Never Dies I fell asleep in the theater in Die Another Day

iTunes has the Daniel Craig movies in a bundle for $30 today. Not a bad deal for 4 movies. They're also in 4K, which I don't think any other service has.

So I'm going to break the OPs heart and tell him the truth: The Brosnan movies are bad. Goldeneye is fine and that's about it. Top Tier Bond (not necessarily ranked)) From Russia With Love Casino Royale The Living Daylights License to Kill Her Majesty's Secret Service The rest of the Connery movies are fine. I recommend Dr. No since it's the first and there's some good stuff in it. The Moore movies are so corny and bad but if that's your thing, go for it. The two Dalton movies are really good. Check them out. I already gave my thoughts on the Brosnan movies. The rest of the Craig movies are mediocre to bad, but Skyfall and Spectre have absolutely amazing cinematography that they're worth checking out. P.S. Check out Never Say Never Again. It's an interesting oddity. edit: The Best Bond songs are A View to A Kill and The Living Daylights. There's no room for debate on this one. Keep in mind, everyone only really likes the first and third Craig movies. Funnily enough, I just saw Moonraker for the first time last night (I'm slooooowly going through the 2015 bluray set) and for what was supposed to be one of the terrible ones, I really liked it. It's got a silly plot that is revealed far too late, so Bond is just wandering around the world most of the time without much purpose, but the locations and sets were beautiful, the action was fun enough, and the effects like miniature shuttles launching looked great. I watched all the Bond movies I hadn’t seen recently when they were on Netflix (some are still there), mostly late period Moore, Dalton, and Tomorrow Never Dies. Late Moore was truly awful. I was so angry after A View to a Kill that I watched Casino Royale again instead of going to bed. Dalton was a pretty good Bond and I enjoyed his two movies. Shame about the legal dispute or whatever it was that killed his tenure.

The only Bond era I really have a hard time with is Moore. I just can't take him seriously, which hurts my enjoyment of his better entries, and then the ones that are goofier just don't work at all for the same reason. Connery could land a ridiculous jetpack copter thing and then believably be into straight spy stuff a few scenes later and I totally buy into it. Moore just felt like too much of a joke.

Live and Let Die is terrible, but it's an entertaining disaster. It's a James Bond blaxploitation mash-up that just makes no goddamn sense and is full of crazy poo poo happening continuously. It also has what has to be the highest death count by a New Orleans jazz funeral procession ever put to film. It's that kind of movie. The Spy Who Loved Me is the closest thing to an Actually Good Bond Movie Roger Moore made. For Your Eyes Only has its moments but really suffers from the bizarre "underage figure skater desperate to gently caress Roger Moore" subplot which uhhhhh nope.

I like the theme in Goldeneye that Bond is a "dinosaur" "a relic of the Cold War." M says it early on but the whole move is ostensibly about technology and computers and Bond is so clearly out of his element. Natalya is the one who finds out the second Goldeneye is in Cuba and as she explains this to Bond he's basically "wha-". Later on Natalya hacks into the computer to thwart Travelyan's plans while Bond is forced to just throw a big wrench into it. I'm a big Metal Gear Solid fan so I can't help but think of Solid Snake. Bond and Snake are two guys, tough as nails and far from stupid but still old-fashioned and not exactly adaptable. They don't exactly have a place in the modern world. IfJames Bond was antiquated in the mid-90-s, how does Craig Bond stay relevant?

The plot revolves around financing terrorism, Bond foils an attack at an airport. It’s also a reboot, beginning with Bond being granted his 00 status. It’s a younger, less hardened Bond. It still follows a lot of the Bond formula, beautiful women, exotic locales, etc. but it’s a fresh take on the character imo. Skyfall on the other hand is much more of a return to the old style and pretty much explicitly rejects the themes of Goldeneye. We don’t talk about Quantum of Solace or Spectre.

I'm gonna echo the License to Kill love in here. I watched it for the first time a few weeks ago and really liked it. It seemed like more of a sequel to OHMSS than Diamonds Are Forever did too IMO. I gotta say I did not expect Big Ed Hurley to be in the movie either but it was fun that he was.

It always ends up in the same place anyway so you really haven't done poo poo. But I'm one of those people who finds most of the Craig movies to be mostly joyless slogs.
