true but I’d put a few bonds ahead of roger moore honestly so I still disagree with him. I like when Bond goes psycho mode and you can see the evil in his eyes lol. Pierce was great at this

CelticPredator posted:drat yeah I don’t think you’d even care to post tbh lol Well most Bond films just exist in their own universe of ripping off other stuff, being B movies that cost 500 times more than the average B movie, being kinda terrible outside of all that, or all three. Going all the way back to From Russia with Love is kinda harsh, there's been some OK entries besides that, but the idea that in particular the modern Broccoli movies are all amazing treasures doesn't withstand a laugh test. We all lived through the post-Golden Eye Brosnan stuff for one example.

TWINE rules

Quantum of Phallus posted:TWINE rules I've always liked it. (it's also the superior N64 Bond game adaptation) But I think Denise Richards hurts it.I've said it before but I kinda feel bad for her. She's the main love interest in two movies from my childhood and everybody is like "yeah, the fake love interest was way better." But yeah, apart from her, I thought everyone was fantastic. TWINE and Goldeneye both benefit from having a cast of great characters across the baord. TND was fun but mainly due to Carver, IMO. TWINE had Elektra, Renard, M in a major role, and we even got to see Valentin again. Also has one of my favorite Bond themes.

James Bond is cool. Black Bag is a kind of fun spy related movie that's out. Also Lupin the Third is the James Bond franchise of Japan I'd say, only with even more comedy, but yeah always recommended. Has a new anime movie hitting soon. Give us some cool fun spy adventures with Bond. So many people making movies love it, it's gotta be doable. Heavy Metal fucked around with this message at 02:23 on Apr 6, 2025 |

Golgo 13 is closer to Bond than Lupin

Gaius Marius posted:Golgo 13 is closer to Bond than Lupin I don't feel that way, but I thought of giving that a shout-out too. I think the movies of Bond and the movies / feature length TV specials of Lupin are very comparable, adventure in that Bond-y way. And Golgo is more cold and stuff, though with some dark comedy, and specific in its focus on villains in a Columbo kind of procedural vibe etc, and to me a bit less of what I'm thinking of. Maybe more comparable to book Bond in tone etc. What I enjoy about the Bond thing and Bond movie influenced media, I get that more from Lupin. And I was saying the franchise rather than the character, also Golgo doesn't have many movies in comparison, especially in recent decades. I can see how on paper you'd say the main characters are more similar with Golgo for sure. Either way, I'd rather say check them both out. That's fair. Lupin is more Moore and Golgo is more Dalton or early Connery.

Golgo 13 has been said to be probably an inspiration for Agent 47, and Hitman overall is definitely on the Bond spectrum, though with its own twists.

"The franchise was snapped up by the streaming giants after 2021’s No Time To Die featured the death of the super-spy, played by Daniel Craig. A TV insider told The Sun: “They can’t just pretend it didn’t happen. So they’re looking at his story as a younger man in a different era.” TV Insider = someone from that poo poo rag rag made it up. OF COURSE they can pretend it didn't happen. An origin/prequel would be absolutely lame as gently caress.

James Bond had a wife for twelve minutes in the sixth movie and she's spent the last 56 years both existing and not existing in each movie depending on if they felt like bringing it up or not.

Lack of actual canon has been one of the franchise's biggest strengths. Seriously, it's a lot like Batman, or perhaps even more on point the pulp adventure stories that I'm pretty sure the original books can be classified is. (What nowdays we call Clancy poo poo) Characters that are more archetypes that can be mixed up like a classic theatre troupe, a formulaic plot that lends itself to mixing up the details like mad libs, and being able to draw from previous stuff and other sources like scooping from a big idea bucket without getting bogged down by more than the bare minimum of obligations. It's also a structure that works when you have an ongoing franchise with frequent to constant changes of writers, directors, and cast. Still funny how when you get down to it, the big template that Hollywood's been treating to recreate for two decades now is clearly Lord of the Rings, and similarly not really understanding how or why that worked.

Speaking of canon the opening to diamonds are forever is awful. The worst opening scene hands down. Is he getting revenge for his wife? Is he just mad? Who knows. Every aspect of it is done so poorly. The adr is atrocious and the worst aspect is this is Connery returning. It’s a big moment. He walks into frame and is like My name is bondjamesbond. ![]() I really dislike this movie top to down
