:wrong: Go even darker. Give it to Ken Loach, Brendan Gleeson as an old, dying Bond driving an uber to make ends meet.

They should do something really unique and have Bond be assigned a mission and actually do it without going rogue or anything. No poorly written attempts at serialization or anything, just a standalone adventure with pulpy action sequences.

One thing I like about the Living Daylights is the fact that it actually uses the Cold War setting for it's plot. Most of the films try to avoid real world politics, so it's nice to see a film that opens with a Berlin Wall defection, deals with the Soviet "Death to Spies" program, the war in Afghanistan, etc.

Next you have to watch Operation Double 007 starring Neil Connery and Never Say Never Again to complete the faux Bond trilogy. Bonus points if you watch The Dragon Lives Again, where James Bond is one of the rulers of Hell that Bruce Lee has to fight with his buddy Popeye.

I'm gonna guess that saying the Mission Impossible is cheating?

That recent Man From UNCLE movie was good. Too bad we'll never get a sequel since Armie Hammer turned out to be a sicko.

The long running comic Modesty Blaise kind of has a similar vibe.

Mantis42
Jul 26, 2010

The franchise has always been reactive to popular trends in cinema, for better and for worst. This film definitely feels inspired by Logan. I feel like there are some other recent movies where a protagonist cares for a surprise daughter before dying but that's the only one I can remember.

I think there's a difference between pulp and camp. I want pulp, I want heightened reality, I want something a little more expressionist rather than drab and "realistic". I want episodic adventure films again. I don't really want another multi film exploration of Bond's character, because he doesn't have one.

My hot James Bond take is that Pierce Brosnan is not a very good actor. He coasts pretty far on his looks and natural presence but he just can't act.

You don't need to be a good actor to play James Bond. Like good looks and natural presence are 90% of the character. Plus, he got atrocious scripts

Mantis42
Jul 26, 2010

I didn't say that good acting couldn't elevate the role or that Connery wasn't a better actor, I said it's not a necessity. Roger Moore couldn't act at all but he filled the role.

I thought the bionic eye fell on the right side of camp without being obvious pastiche or tongue in cheek. Actually the whole Spectre party in Cuba section was great, Ana De Armas was a good Bond girl. And the opening was well done too. And I liked the action scene in the woods. Hell I think I might just straight up be a NTTD Liker. 3rd best Craig film after Casino and Skyfall.

e: I'm currently rewatching the entire franchise with my buddy and we just made it past Diamonds Are Forever. He hasn't seen NTTD yet and I don't think he knows about the ending, so that should be fun seeing his reaction.

Mantis42
Jul 26, 2010

Well like I said we just finished Diamonds so last week we watch OHMSS. I'm one of the people who likes it while he always remembered disliking it. I think we reach synthesis and agreed that it's simply too long and a lot of the best bits are in the back half.

But I'll let you know how it goes when we get there. We're not binging them, just watching one or two a week when we have the opportunity to hang out.

Mantis42
Jul 26, 2010

It was already a thing before Casino with the Bourne movies. Quantum has it bad because they tried to make the movie in editing. The opening car chase would be great if they didn't randomly decide to get rid of one the cars they filmed.

Made it up to Dalton in my series rewatch, watched The Living Daylights yesterday. Still a great film, I'd say it's up there with From Russia With Love in terms of taking advantage of the Cold War to create an interesting spy caper, rather than just the standard 'villain in a lair' plot. It kind of suffers at the end with Joe Don Baker becoming the main villain, but otherwise it's a film with a great cold open, a great song, a great Bond car, a great henchman, and some great action set pieces. My friend and I got a lot of laughs out of the mujahadeen stuff, especially when they say they had 'trouble at the airport' hahahaha.

Honestly in an era where movie stars are getting older and older all the time Roger Moore wasn't even that bad looking in his last outing, he was only 60. You can't really do the normal Bond stuff at that point maybe but you could probably write a good film around an older spy like that.

e: also as far as Golden Gun goes it's one of my favorite Moore films. I like the sort of sleazy 70s Asia aesthetic, love the villain and his henchman, I even love the song even though it's dumb as hell.
