Don't gently caress this up and create a new account when you launch the Steam version, it's irreversible.

ATTENTION: Do not start Phantasy Star Online 2 on a new platform until you fully understand this account-linking process. Creating a character/setting up a Player ID on a new platform is irreversible and you will not be able to link your account after the fact.

**The same account-linking code cannot be used more than twice.

***If the first account-linking code is not used, and a new one is issued, only the newest account-linking code will be active.

Phantasy Star Online 2 is a free to play online action RPG, encouraging you to time your attacks, manually dodge enemy attacks, and feel cool while doing so.

Races:
Human
The generic race with nothing special about them

Newman
Basically space-elves

CASTs
Robots and/or Cyborgs

Dewman
Space edgelords with horns and different colored eyes

There's some small modifiers on your base stats depending on race and gender, but nothing that will hold you back in the long run. Follow your dreams.

Classes:
After you create your character, you can change your class anytime you are in the lobby at the class counter for no charge.

Hunter
Weapons: Swords, Partisans, and Wired Lances
Playstyle: lots of blocking, and making stuff attack you. Great if you like large and slow weapons, long pointy sticks, or grapple moves
Ideal Subclasses:
Preferred Mags: S-atk/MEL (Fighter or Etoile sub), DEX (alternative option for Phantom sub only)

Ranger
Weapons: Assault Rifles and Launchers
Playstyle: Mid to long range combat, as well as applying debuffs to make things easier to beat up. Rangers try not to reposition unless they have to.
Ideal Subclasses:
Preferred Mag: R-atk/RNG (Hunter or Etoile sub), DEX (alternative option for Phantom sub only)

Force
Weapons: Rods and Talis
Playstyle: Action Wizard
Ideal Subclasses:
Preferred Mag: T-atk/TEC

Braver
Weapons: Katanas and Bows
Playstyle: Katanas allow you to parry like a Hunter, while Bows give you lots of range and utility like a Ranger weapon. You can even take up one weapon and ignore the other if you want!
Ideal Subclasses:
Preferred Mag: DEX

Bouncer
Weapons: Dual Blades and Jet Boots
Playstyle: Dual blades are death by ten thousand cuts, while Jet boots can Rider Kick while laying down some support techs. Bouncer has some second-string buff-based support qualities; they're nice to have, but nobody's really going to miss them if you slack off on them.
Ideal Subclasses:
Preferred Mag: DEX or S-atk/MEL

Summoner
Weapons: Tacts, but more importantly the Pets they command
Playstyle: Make a little critter do the dirty work for you, but you still gotta tell it what to do.
Ideal Subclasses:
Preferred Mags: All mags are welcome here

These classes are not available from character creation, but you can change to them as soon as you reach the lobby:

Fighter
Weapons: Twin Daggers, Doublesabers, & Knuckles
Playstyle: Danger Zone melee assassin
Ideal Subclass:
Preferred Mag: S-atk/MEL

Gunner
Weapons: Twin Mechineguns and Rifles
Playstyle: Close range guns, also building combos to deal massive damage
Ideal Subclasses:
Preferred Mag: R-atk/RNG

Techter
Weapons: Wands and Talis
Playstyle: Buffs, Bonks, and Techs
Ideal Subclasses:
Preferred Mag: T-atk/TEC, S-atk/MEL, or DEX when using Phantom as a subclass

Successor Classes are new classes they've been adding since Episode 5, they cannot use a subclass, but they do get to use completely different movesets for their weapons!

To unlock Successor classes, you have to reach level 75 in any 2 classes.

Hero
Weapons: Swords, Twin Machineguns, and Talis
Playstyle: Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series
Preferred Mag: One of S-atk/MEL, R-atk/RNG, or T-atk/TEC

Phantom
Weapons: Rods, Rifles, and Katanas
Playstyle: Attacking enemies applies markers to them, once you've built enough markers, you can detonate them for extra damage
Preferred Mag: DEX
When used as a subclass, makes every class Dex Mag compatible!

Étoile
Weapons: Doublesabers, Wands, and Dual Blades
Playstyle: Space Paladin / Royal Guard
Preferred Mag: One of S-atk/MEL, R-atk/RNG, or T-atk/TEC
Using Étoile as a subclass allows you to use a 200 single-atk mag for any class!

Coming in September-ish:
Luster
Weapon: Gunslash.

2nd Post:

I swear to god im going to make a beginners guide here someday

Quick beginners guide:

Make your character
Do the tutorial
Run all of the Training quests to get a brief overview of the other classes, you might like something other than your first choice!
Play Arks Quests and Free Field explorations to unlock more areas
Do Koffie's client orders
The new Arks Mission system should help guide you too
Take a Special Collection File from Pudding
Run Emergency Quests when they happen, they let you run them on lower difficulties too!

Reach level 75 on your first class
Grind and Equip the 12★ units the Title girl gives you for reaching level 75
Get your subclass to level 75
(not yet available on the NA server) Try out Hero, Phantom, and Etoile; then probably play those instead because they don't use subclasses
Talk to us in the Discord server! We love helping!

We don't know anything about what's going on with this Microsoft platform release beyond "its happening" and "it will be playable in North America"

I'll play it to hang out with people sometimes, but I won't be burning my account on this server any time soon. I still remember Phantasy Star Universe's Xbox360 server, and that was only 3 months behind the Japanese server to start.

That said, we don't know anything about what's happening on the Japanese server beyond a vague hint at a new class sometime this winter; so for all we know this could even be integrated into the Japanese servers!

and I can say that with a straight face because if you told me PSO2 was going to be at the microsoft E3 event yesterday I would have told you that joke was already old 5 years ago

presuming separate servers; I'm also concerned about access to the 8 years of non-collab cosmetics too

as well as how cosmetics are distributed via gatcha/lootbox to begin with, which isn't the best look these days

but yeah maybe there's going to be a little more info this week; though they could wind up leaving us completely in the dark again until 2020 for all we know

EDIT: as for the "why" question; well, there's at least going to be a whole lot more to do at launch compared to 7 years ago. as for "why now, after all this time"; yeah that's still unknown, and probably going to be a real funny story to hear

I think you'll be surprised by the turnout; and well, I'll still say it'll be better to have had more people to have played this at least a little then to have never played it at all.

while I am all too familiar with their management of Xbox-based servers; I wouldn't be here today had I not played on those servers.

not to mention, if it shuts down in 2 years that's basically at the end of pscrew's original plan for this game's development support; so the amount of stuff they'd be missing out on would likely be minimal at worst.

The only really dated-feeling things in this game are strictly non-combat related; which is at least half of the reason I've been able to keep playing this for these seven whole years. The other half is the friends I've made along the way, which likely won't be an issue for people getting into the xbone version.

As for the combat, I've convinced people to start playing simply by sending them this video alone:

http://pso2.jp/players/news/24311/ The next Dev Stream is this weekend, at the next stop of the Phantasy Star Thanks Festival; this'll be the first dev stream since E3 so it'll be interesting to see how or even if they acknowledge the Xbox One announcement. It's not on the event description here; I assume they might still be pretending it's a secret. Believe it or not, there are people in Japan who own an Xbox One, so it might be a bad look for SEGA to have all this other cross-platform business going on but suddenly they tell Xbox One users they have to play on their own server. That might have been acceptable in 2006 but it'll look real weird for them to do it again in 2019.

you still gotta do koffies orders, and probably a couple others scattered about; but the game should point them at you as you need em

none of the daily/weekly cooldown orders are needed for much of anything; there's an npc near one of the quest counters that gives a grab bag of daily client orders to do anyway. sometimes theres one or two worth grabbing but no stress there

for exp I think the latest set of level up quests; the 4th quest you'll see in the "featured quests" section each day, should be good to run. do the featured quests and you'll probably get some Bonus Keys to run a bonus quest, which are all pretty great exp too.

for gear you can just buy a Dim-series weapon for the weapon type you want to use from the market, at least once you got the stats to use it. those will work for now; but grinding it would want to take either a few pre-+30'd 13* from pudding's collection files, or a pre-+30'd Ray-series weapon from leontina if you have a few leontina certificates from various things like the seasonal missions (which seem to have replaced bingo cards)

its a clusterfuck but I'd say like 80% of it is completely ignoreable outside of maybe a couple things needing a single clear for something that is currently asking you to do it. so its not really far off from how you are talking about PSU; you just lack the community to tell you where all of these things are like you had in PSU; which was also a clusterfuck, but most of that stuff was also hidden due to missions being linked to the lobbies you took them from; so you didnt always have The Fight for Food staring you in the face like you have Za Oodan Surpression here

if you still had some Time Stone Chronos to use for an Atlas EX weapon, now's a pretty good time to get the material weapons to do that. also getting some Novel weapons would probably be a good idea, and you can use the 7th Anniversary badges to stock up on solo PD and solo earth destroyers triggers if you need em too.

there was this interview with a sega of Japan executive and a Japanese microsoft rep from late July: https://www.gamebusiness.jp/article...7/22/15987.html

it sounds mostly like "we were looking to move the game servers from in-house machines to cloud-based servers, we checked out AWS and Google cloud, but then microsoft came knocking because they wanted something to get their cloud computing service on the map. since they also do windows and xbox we figured to go with them so we could probably bring pso2 to xbox platforms along the way"

there's a very concerning part in there that reads like "yeah so we thought our 'play to win' structure would be fine for western audiences, but microsoft is telling us western players would be mad if they can't pump in money and get direct power for it? lmao"

otherwise that article seems to say they've done some form of testing already by that point; both with the idea of moving the Japanese pso2 servers onto Microsoft Azure, and apparently some tests with western audiences? I mean microsoft probably has a bunch of randos on call for that kind of thing shrug

I think they'll probably start the beta with the game in an Episode 6 state/features/quality of life, but only have access to Episode 1 quests for a short amount of time. I mean this in a "If they turned on EVERYTHING at once, and something goes wrong somewhere, trying to figure out where thing went wrong could probably be a huuuuuuge headache" way. I'm also guessing they probably first want to test the load on the Microsoft Azure servers and see what they need to do to compensate as they scale things upward and let the PC players in.

like my bet is that the page only says "9 classes" because they could still have the level cap set below 75 for a short period, and when they push that up to 80/90/95? they'll also open access to the successor classes.

the main reason I have for this is "I do not think pscrew would have ever kept backups of older builds of the game around"

The main difference this time over what happened with the Phantasy Star Universe Xbox servers, is that rather than Sega of America running the server, they handed the whole operation off to Mircosoft itself; on the other side of the deal here, I think they are still in the process of also moving the Japanese servers onto Microsoft's Azure cloud computing service too. So both companies likely want to keep the other happy in this scenario.

EDIT: it didn't happen 5 years ago because, I assume, because SoJ didnt want to do other servers themselves, and nobody made a NA server offer until they went to talk to Microsoft about a rate on Cloud Computing for their japanese pso2 servers

That's the vibe im getting anyway; SoJ sometimes does incredibly stupid things fueled by worse reasons I think

North America server will support crossplay between Xbone and PC. Accounts are being handled through Xbox Live.

JP Server currently supports crossplay between PC, PS4, Switch (and I think Vita is still technically functional) Accounts here are handled through Sega ID (all platforms), PSN ID(PS4/vita, can link to a Sega ID), Whatever You Call Nintendo Switch's ID Service (can link to a Sega ID), LINE app (PC Only, but can link to a Sega ID later), Twitter???? (They just added this, I assume its like LINE and PC only with an option to create/link a Sega ID to it for more account features)

note: there are crossplay lobbies for PC/PS4, PC/PS4/Vita, and PC/Switch, but no crossplay between playstation and nintendo platforms.

This makes me unreasonably happy. I just hope the ping isn't too awful.
pso2 does nearly all personal player movement and collision checks client side, so it winds up feeling like there's hardly any ping at all; though you may not see your damage numbers pop up right away until the server can confirm your data.

changing weapons can also get hung up by lag too, so if it's giving you trouble you probably just don't want to swap weapons too often.

unless theres a way to just slam a character file into an xbone; I dont have an xbone so I wouldn't know if they just let you access files from a networked PC directly or something

I personally use mouse and keyboard but I've heard of some cool concepts in the realms of using controller+keyboard; ranging from playing mostly with controller but having a few actions you dont use during combat still just on the keyboard, to even left-hand does wasd keyboard stuff while your right-hand holds the right side of a controller

Awesome! I started up in time for the last 3 Urgent Quests so I'm glad I can satisfy my dumb desire for Cool Stuff later tonight.

I just picked Hunter because I have no idea what I'm doing but it seems that shooting stuff is way better? Every Urgent Quest was just 10 people blasting everything before I could even walk up to it. I kind of went in with a Monster Hunter World mentality that all of the weapons are viable and good.
yeah all weapon types are good; except for gunblade being kinda left in the dust behind all of the other weapon types, and talis on force takes a bit of work and know-how to utilize otherwise you're better off sticking to rod. talis on techter and rifle on gunner are more just backup weapons for a few weird scenarios.

everybody just rolling through a map like a big ol' murdertrain is kind of a normal thing, especially on the lower difficulties.

the FAQ on the NA website says we should have 3 free character slots; which is the same as the JP server. You typically do want to have all three character slots in use because whenever there's an update that adjusts Photon Arts or Class Skills, they always issue out a free all-tree reset passes for each of your characters, no matter what level they are.

I'd say you'd want to have a character that uses a 200 of one single atk/pwr stat if you feel particularly drawn to one of the first six classes: hunter or fighter for S-atk/MEL, Ranger or gunner for R-atk/RNG, or force for T-atk/TEC, with Techter being sort-of able to go with either a T-atk/TEC or S-atk/MEL mag early on. Thanks to Summoner having the "switch strike" and "switch shoot" skills, it can use any mag

If you're drawn to Braver or Bouncer, go all-in on DEX basically.

Once Hero, Phantom, and Etoile are available, a few more options are opened.

Hero and Etoile both take the highest atk/pwr stat on your mag and apply it to all three atk/pwr stats. While Hero cannot be used as a subclass, Etoile can; though so far it seems like the only classes that really want to consider Etoile sub are Hunter and Ranger, I'll say why later though. This does mean that if you have a T-atk/TEC mag or a R-atk/RNG mag, you can just go play Hu/Et and your mag would work perfectly fine; same for Ra/Et and S-atk/MEL and T-atk/TEC mags.

While Braver and Bouncer use skills that take a mag's DEX and apply it to both atk/pwr stats those classes can use, Phantom applies DEX to all three atk/pwr stats! Mag skills stack, so for Br/Ph and Bo/Ph, a 200 DEX mag gives them 400 atk/pwr for both of the stats they use! Also, Phantom's damage skills are pretty universally applicable to pretty much every class, so basically all of those classes can wind up using a dex mag too.

Once Etoile and Phantom are unlocked, you can use them as a subclass for nearly every class. Braver and Bouncer synergize too well with Phantom sub to really even consider Etoile sub; and Etoile's Damage Balancer skill nullifies most sources of healing outside of consumable items, so that can cause hiccups for Force, Techter, Summoner, and to some extent, Fighter. Meanwhile, There's a left-hand ring for Gunner that boosts damage while using a "Stance" skill, which has had the effect of making hunter or fighter sub just stronger enough that you'd wanna just stick to those still. Finally, like half of Force's skills are still on the Techter tree for some dumb reason, so while Fo/Ph might seem cool, you'd still would rather stick to Fo/Te; if you don't just jump over to playing rod-only Phantom anyway. oh right and Etoile sub has some weird incompatibilities with Technique and Pet damage too.

at least, this is most of the reasoning behind the recommendations I have in the thread OP

oh right I forgot this was supposed to be about mags. well, I forget the point I was making, but you can probably draw some sort of conclusion yourself
