I played this ever so briefly some years back but the translation patch was still pretty sparse at the time and the language barrier eventually got to me but I'm hella excited for an actual English release to actually get into the game proper.

Been playing some PSO and PSU lately as a nostalgia trip in the meantime. It's actually kind of crazy how well PSO has aged for being as old as it is, it still doesn't look bad at all.

Anyways I'm looking forward to immediately diving straight into Braver when I get to play this on PC. Finding it hard to decide between weebsticks or bows though because both options are very much my jam in games.

Played a Hunter on the JP server years ago but I think I quit in the mid-late 50s because there was just an overwhelming amount of poo poo to do.

Going to probably start as a Force (or maybe Fighter since you can still swap right at the start right?) and see how bad of an idea that turns out to be.

Yeah you can swap fresh out the tutorial or after doing some baby tutorials with Afin in the lobby I forget which. The only jobs unavailable to you right out of the gate are the Successor Classes which require base level 75 in any 2 classes first.

Since I only played for a couple months right near when the original english patch was released I decided to for one of the "new" classes for my US char. New is in heavy quotes because I picked Braver, the oldest class not part of the original six, but hey, y'know. I just wanted to be a robot with a katana. I know supposedly Braver works best by focusing one weapon over the other, but is a balanced build TOO far behind? I figure for Mag I can just straight dump into Dex since it seems like it benefits both weapons. Not that I ended up doing a whole lot of katana-ing so far since I got sidetracked by dumb casino minigames like I do in every JRPG that has them.

In regards to framerate, it's absolutely perfect within missions regardless of what's going on, but it tanks to slideshow levels hanging out in the lobby. That's probably to be expected due to first day shakes, just giving my impressions of it.

You will eventually get enough points at high levels to spec both weapons but you'll wanna pick one to start off with rather than try to go back and forth. Also pure dex is the way to go yes. Bouncer can also use a dex mag and eventually phantom when they come out.

How much of a handicap is it to go with a pure S-ATK mag if you want to also play Bouncer/Braver? Is it like, a slight delay to how soon you can equip new gear, or will you simply be hamstrung in endgame?

It's not ideal but you can still do fine with a Katana for Braver since they scale on S-ATK and iirc most of them also use S-ATK for equip requirements as well. It does mean you won't really be doing anything with a Bow though. Basically Braver has a free passive that converts all the DEX on their mag into both S-ATK & R-ATK meaning they can go in on both weapons with equal efficacy, skill point builds aside. I'm less familiar with Bouncer to comment on how the weapons scale and stuff but it has the same kind of mag passive, just for S-ATK & T-ATK instead.

There's a katana PA that does a pretty long dash that you can dodge cancel repeatedly for real quick movement as well, for any Bravers out there. I forget the name unfortunately.

Mags are tied to the character yeah, you can't storage and transfer them at all. That said you get 3 character slots for free so if you aren't opposed to alts you can have 3 different characters with different Mag stats if you wanna play around with just about everything optimally.

Also while I'm complaining what the HELL is with the incredibly disjointed chopped up plot?

Originally the story was done through things called Matter Boards. You'd run out into fields to find little events and also fill out random requirements to go down the story path. It was more integrated into the game but was apparently grindy as balls and everyone hated it so they eventually just completely axed it for the current layout where story is just given to you and you get the random unique missions every so often. This does make the story feel pretty chopped up and a bit weirdly paced since you just kind of end up watching like 20 cutscenes for every one actual mission yeah. It gets a little better once you get out of early Episode 1 since a lot of the early stuff is just "hey I see your exploring Forest/Cave/Etc here's some new NPC and a bite of some random plot of the day", once you get past that the plot starts to get more unified with stuff.

That said it's still a bullshit anime plot so try not to take it too seriously.

Finally getting around to trying out NA since life has been something else and I still have a million other games I'm distracted by. Decided to start of Gunner this time around and it just feels right to flip around all over the place shooting poo poo. I still miss the supreme satisfaction that comes from Braver katana counters but I'll manage.

Does NA already have most of the skill rings around? Because I definitely want the forward roll ring for Gunner.

There's apparently a 4th Successor Job (ie like Hero/Phantom/Etoile) showing up in JP sometime that actually does stuff with Gunblade.

You should be able to just install Tweaker and on first startup it'll ask if you have NA or JP and then ask you to point it to where it's installed. I pointed it to my installation from the microsoft store and it works just fine.

I kinda fell off of PSO2 due to life and other games but man this looks rad. Hopefully we don't have to wait 13 years for it to come to NA!

I must say it's kind of hilarious that New Genesis PSO2 A Realm Reborn is barely a year out from PSO2 finally getting a Western release.

Haven't spent much time with NA but for all the time I spent on JP I played Braver and I can vouch that it's a very good and very fun class. A number of PAs flow super well into one another for satisfying combos, you get to crazy dash everywhere with one particular PA, and you get massive big booty counterattacks. There's nothing quite as satisfying as countering a boss' giant meteor.
