This game is good as hell but the inventory management is killing me. What should I keep? What should I have on my person? Why are there a billion different currencies taking up room in my inventory?

I highly suggest skipping the in-game story scenes entirely and just watching the anime: https://www.funimation.com/shows/phantasy-star-online-2-episode-oracle/ it's a decent anime in its own right and an overwhelmingly better way to experience the story.

The anime doesn't include harukotan or magatsu (because it's totally irrelevant to the plot and exists only as a framing device for a boss fight) but other than that it's pretty much exactly the same story. I suggest watching the anime first and then skipping every cutscene in the game unless it doesn't look familiar to the story you already saw.
