some PC games had that but i’ve never heard of a PS1 game having that. i have a feeling that PS1 games were structured differently on the disc such that it couldn’t also have audio tracks but i don’t know

I dunno if CD players were capable of reading the black PSX discs, but I know for a fact that PC games had that because I accidentally played the first track (data) of the Sam & Max Hit the Road CD in my dad's super expensive sound system and it was extremely loud screeching that almost blew out the speakers.

You could play sometimes play audio off of psx discs but it was usually just a track of a voice saying "please don't do this, it can damage your cd player"

iirc lunar silver star story had a small voice track thng on the second disc if you plugged it into a cd. maybe i'm thinking of the saturn version though. also it had a warlords clone that you could get on the second disk that was more fun than actually playing lunar silver star story

Yes some psx games could be listened on cd players with the first track containing data. Rayman 1 vigilante 8 and symphiny if the night (only one track on it tho) for example

I put the Mortal Kombat 3 disc for the PS1 in my Aiwa boom box CD player when I was a kid and every track was playable. Track one was a horrible noise since it was the data track but track two and up was all audio. I loved it so much because when you started getting to like track 30 all it was was Shao khan voices completely isolated and it was so kickass hearing them like that

most ps1 games that had streaming cd audio did it using a ps1-centric file format (XA) instead of the redbook cd audio that cd players cared about. i dunno the technical reasons but it probably took up less disc space. semi-thread related, here's where the tunes came from back in the day https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA3LzyH6cEg
