Lift Your Little Paws Like Antennas to Heaven!

Most of what I know about Japanese idol bands revolves around highly managed troupes of performers working under the absolute control of one of Japan's talent management companies. The manufactured artificiality of Japanese idols seemed inextricable from the very notion of idols. However, recently I've found a couple idol getting mentioned in corners of the internet for the kind of weird poo poo no one cares about that I listen to. Namely this well done cover of Magma's Last Seven Minutes

And ・・・・・・・・・, a group whose output runs from harsh noise to heavy shoegaze to j-rock.

What's going on in this scene? Are these bands managed or actually grass roots groups who for some reason have decided that they want to do choreographed dance routines to obscure prog from the 70s? Who is the audience for this? Are they many of these weird groups?

The four most over-rated things in life are champagne, lobster, anal sex and picnics. Oh, and that stupid children's book 'The Little Prince,' ugh.

There's only one
Human race
Many faces
Everybody belongs here

There probably are a lot. I've seen a few just out on the street performing. Trying to get noticed. And I don't even live in Japan. I've just visited a few times. Usually it's 5 or 6 girls doing a dance routine with a couple singing and some friend holding a boom box off to the side. And a small crowd, mainly of similarly aged boys, standing and watching.

This article goes over a few underground idol groups and talks about the scene a bit. Quite dated but I'm going to guess that the only thing that's changed is more Twitter usage.
