Fionna MacCarthy posted:

After the initial shock, [...] as Gill's history of adulteries, incest, and experimental connection with his dog became public knowledge in the late 1980s, the consequent reassessment of his life and art left his artistic reputation strengthened. Gill emerged as one of the twentieth century's strangest and most original controversialists, a sometimes infuriating, always arresting spokesman for man's continuing need of God in an increasingly materialistic civilization, and for intellectual vigour in an age of encroaching triviality.

every time someone writes helvetica in helvetica my broken brain compels me to look at the a to see if someone is trying to catch me in that nerd trap where you write helvetica in arial to annoy typography nerds

so congratulations, you got me

people who sperg out on what arial looks like at large sizes don't seem to understand it was optimized for low dpi screen display over what it looks like printed

that's why it looks so different at 16 than 14 on windows

honestly tho, properly hinted and non-antialiased fonts look real real sharp on LCD screens

why did we switch to this morass of non hinted and blurry fonts for like, years before hidpi was even a thing?

the hinting is what costs money. a typeface is explicitly not copyrightable in the us, but the hinting is considered software and is thus copyrightable and can be sold.

$200 for one computer, vs, $391 for one "user", and the higher prices are just bundles of fonts. Like Gotham ends up around $2k for all combinations.
