Lachlann already has his survival knife on his webbing and the stiletto in a boot shealth. He affixes his starlight scope to his L42. He loads his personal med kit, an atropine injector and a mag each for the L42 and the MP5 on his webbing. He clips his NVGs to his helmet. He stashes binoculars, a gas mask, his lockpick set, two more mags for each gun, and two frag grenades in his rucksack and loads it along with the guns in the cab of the truck towing the fuel.

"I'll ride with you" he says to Erik. "And you can borrow my NVGs while you drive if you want them."

Cheek checks his webbing and armor, already mostly adjusted from years in Europe, and then does a quick weapons check on the CAWS and his pistol before putting them in the Peacekeeper. "Robotron, Jackson, either of you want to drive? Otherwise I'll do it. We have another set of NVGs handy?"

All gear aside from the CAWS + 5 magazines, pistol + 1 magazine, combat webbing and armor go in the ruck which goes in the truck with the trailer, since it looks like that's the least loaded.

Now we've got secure radios on all the vehicles I suggest we keep those on one frequency and use them to co-ordinate the convoy and use the 2km hand radios intermittently to listen out for local transmissions". He holsters one of the .45 pistols and a couple of magazines for it from the Peacekeeper and stows one of the M16EZs and a couple of magazines for it in easy reach under the driver's seat in the Peacekeeper.

"Good call on the radios. I'd say we leave the bikes until we're going to split up - it might give fewer eyes on the road, but we'll save fuel. This convoy's going to draw attention as it is. "Welcome aboard. Seems good to have a sniper riding shotgun. Don't worry about NVGs I've got some already." Erik dons the body armor and webbing. Four pairs of G3 mags sit in a bulky row of pouches across his chest, each with a grenade under. He shoves the rucksack with the gas mask and medkit under the seat, and straps on his helmet with the NVG clipped on.

"I guess I'll be following behind the armored car. Lieutenant Cheek was the one looking at the map, I'm sure he knows where we're headed."

Erik's doesn't have any extra equipment that needs stowing. I got IR Goggles and an Image Intensifier, I'm not sure how that translates to real world things, but I am imagining the IR goggles are the helmet mounted NVGs, and the intensifier is like a bulky pair of binoculars worn around the neck? If it was a dumb move to buy both of these things, like they're both helmet mounted, I can lend one of them out.

"Well, if we head up off the beach, we should hit A1A. From there, we'll just need to figure out whether we need to go north or south to reach the 206. Assuming that bridge is intact and passable, we can head due west along that for a while. If it's not, well, poo poo gets dicey. North is quicker but more likely that the rads are going to bounce on us. South is a fair drive before the next crossing out of the coastal area, and there's a couple of places where there's a good chance the road's gone. For now, looks like it's hit the A1A and then look for signs to try and figure out where we are. Work for you, skipper?"

The headlights illuminate the ruined houses around you, but more importantly reveal what's left of the A1A road. Not much, it was less a road and more of a suggestion of one between two rows of destroyed buildings, but nevertheless it served its intended purpose.

It didn't take long to reach the bridge connecting the A1A to the 206, you couldn't believe your luck when the headlights lit up a tiny green rectangle sticking out of the sand at an intersection. The little green rectangle read "SR 206", jackpot.

Jackshit, more like. When you pull up to the bridge you can tell its been through more than one bad storm, there are gaping potholes and cracked asphalt on top but the concrete pillars supporting the thing look sturdy, but it will take careful driving to get across.

Will Sgt Leonard (Sax Solo), 1Lt Jackson (Warthur), and JcDent (Spec Robotron) roll 1d100 each for their respective driving checks.

Sergeant Leonard slowly but expertly drove the large truck over the bridge, weaving between potholes and disabled vehicles. The fuel trailer bumped along behind, but even with the added bulk he crossed the bridge without incident.

First Lieutenant Jackson followed closely behind in the Peacekeeper, with Specialist Pasternak not far behind driving the second truck. Despite one or two close calls they also made it over the bridge, perfectly fine besides some increased heart rates.

Once the bridge was crossed it becomes apparent that the roads are barely usable. Years of neglect in the swampy coasts of Florida, under the weight of countless decaying husks of cars, has left the 206 full of cracks and potholes. It may be partially ruined but it's drivable and marginally preferable to driving in the swamp.

As you slowly drive over the ruined and overgrown road one thing becomes apparent. There is a lot of wildlife left in Florida. More than you've seen since the war ended. Hell, for some of you this is the most "nature" you've ever seen. In all directions there is healthy green vegetation, all sorts of healthy looking game and fowl can be spotted as you drive West and dawn begins to break.

Eventually the trees and giant bushes give way and reveal large overgrown fields. You wonder what they used to grow here... Then you see a large sign, the bold words still visible "WELCOME TO PALATKA" Shortly the convoy comes to a stop at a fork in the road. The fork splits into West and South.

To the West lies a river, and across the river is the majority of the town of Palatka. The bridge across this river looks worse than the last bridge you crossed, and that's saying something. There are certainly less disabled vehicles in that direction, and the roads might be better on the other side. But still, the cracks in the concrete columns make you nervous...

To the South is the 17, a road very similar to the one you've just trekked across for four hours. It appears to be almost overgrown and packed with cars, but the chances of it collapsing out from under you plunging you to your death are almost certainly 0 percent.

Around you are ruined buildings, but slightly less ruined than near the coast. Some even have their roofs on them, you've noticed. The sound of birds can be heard in the early morning sky.

Cheek looks over the map, worrying his lip. "Sir, if we go south on 17, we can cut across the Ocala National Forest or keep going south to DeLand and pick up 44, which takes us right into Crystal River. Given the wrecks, it's likely going to be a bit slower, though I don't think we're on a tight timetable, so that might not matter. There's basically no other route across until the middle of the forest besides the bridge, which doesn't give me a lot of confidence.

The forest is likely to be even more overgrown, and I would be surprised if there's people hiding out in there. Going 17 avoids Gainesville, though, so if we're looking for survivors there we'll need to cut across the forest and head back north."

I thought we were - we were the first to pull out at the beach.

Jackson looked to Captain Te, "Sir, before we move on, do you think it's worth seeing if anyone's at home? This could be the closest we get to Palatka for a while and we'd be kicking ourselves if it turned out later on it was the hub of resistance to New America."

c) Is there an sign of life coming from the town?

I suspect the bridge is going to be marginal at best, so we'll either be risking the vehicles or detouring south. I'm tentatively voting go south unless the bridge is solid, let's get through Crystal River and figure out where we want to set up Basecamp. at that point we can start feeling out the populations outside of New America

Jackson thumbs on the Geiger counter, it slowly ticks to life but levels are lower than they were on the beach. Satisfied, he stows it and looks around. He hopes to see a gas station, no such luck. However there is a CVS on one side of the street and an auto-parts store on the other. The glass is shattered from both but they appear to be in one piece otherwise.

It's odd seeing such a large town with no people left. Back in Europe most towns were bombed out, conventionally or otherwise, but this was just a ghost town. Not a single sign of life, save for the singing of the birds.

Riley doesn't waste time, the Army trained her to do this and she was drat good at it. She walked right up to the bridge and began a mental checklist, calculating the general condition ratings according to the National Bridge Inspection Standards, NBIS. It didn't take a professional to tell you the bridge was structurally deficient, anyone could see that.

But only a professional like Riley could tell that the bridge was a lot better off than it looked. Adding up the different conditions of the different parts of the bridge, and even walking up it a short length to get a better look, Riley can safely conclude the bridge is safe for most vehicles. Tanks and semi trucks? Certainly not, but a few trucks and an armored car don't seem like a problem.
