The original Ferris Bueller was a smug turd, but you really only got the one dose of him, so it didn't have that much time to sink in. A television series would have viewers wishing that something bad (like a seriously painful and eventually fatal) medical happens to him by episode 3. It's sort of like that Netflix Futurama rip-off "Final Space". If people are absolutely sick of your main character by the end of the first or second episode, then the longevity of your series is in bad shape.
