Chilean constituent assembly elections tomorrow (and the day after, because of, y'know, everything). Anyone cares to give a forecast? i think it'll be bad :)
Not like, bad-bad, but certainly a step down from the 78% Apruebo victory last year. My main concern is that, other than a lot of usual right-wing voters going for Apruebo in the referendum, the fault lines in the electorate will remain more or less the same, and Chile Vamos will retain more or less their usual share of the vote (40-50%, though closer to 40 due to Piñera's disastrous numbers), which would be catastrophic under a first-past-the-post system since the left's split in over 5 different lists, while the right's largely unified save for a couple of nutjobs who are going as independents, but since it's a proportional system (D'Hondt method? nobody knows how the gently caress it works lmao), the right's advantages are somewhat mitigated. Still, I suspect a lot of voters are gonna be intimidated by the number of lists and just go with whoever's familiar. The atomization of the left *will* matter in the elections for mayor and governor, though.

Some pointers to keep in mind for tomorrow (+day after) night when I'm getting drunk off my rear end obsessively refreshing the Servel page:

- The magic number is 2/3, since that'll be the quorum required to agree on constitutional articles once the assembly actually starts drafting the constitution, per the roadmap approved in reaction to the 2019 protests. The right will likely clear that 1/3 bar easily (and if they don't, they'll surely be able to get a few christian democrat fucks on their side for specific articles), but that might not necessarily be enough to stonewall major changes, since if a matter is not covered in the constitution it'll be left to be decided by regular legislation, and since the right forecasts remaining a minority in parliament for a while, that could potentially be even worse for them. At any rate, the 2/3 threshold is what a lot of analysts will be looking at when tallying the results. If the left (or, let's say, the not-right, since there's a lot of independents who can be roughly classified as center-to-center-left progressives) gets less than that, it's a defeat. If it gets close to that, it's a win. If it gets more than that, C H I L E Z U E L A .

- My absolute dream result would be for Marcela Cubillos (former minister and senator, chief saboteur of the 2011 education reforms, one of the most prominent faces of the Rechazo camp and wife to similar shitgoblin Andrés Allamand, both being famous for voting against the legalization of divorce in 2004 (!) and each getting divorced the next year after it passed) to eat poo poo once again and fail in her constituent bid. It's extremely unlikely to happen, though, since she received more corporate donations than anyone else in the country and she's running in the extremely safe District 11 (if by any chance you remember the Rechazo vote only winning in three uber-wealthy districts in the entire country, District 11 concentrates all three of those plus a couple of middle- and working-class ones). Still, if by some chance the planets aligned and she didn't get a seat, C H I L E Z U E L A .

- If by some chance Jiles's husband (whom, she made this very clear, she does not gently caress) wins the governorship of the capital, then Jiles is set to win the presidency by a landslide, no matter what the polls say. It'll likely go to Orrego or Parot, though, and if it goes to Edwards we live in hell. If Oliva wins, C H I L E Z U E L A .

Okay, so Jiles has been trying to get her husband, Pablo Maltés, elected for governor pretty much single-handledly (Pamela Jiles is, in theory, part of the Humanist Party, which, in theory, is part of the Frente Amplio coalition, but Maltés is running as a Humanist despite there already being a Frente Amplio candidate because who cares). Since the polls usually show Jiles as the political figure with the highest approval rating on a national level, she's been trying to transfer her base of support to Maltés. It's just that... nobody's entirely sure what Jiles's base of support even is? One would assume it's the left-leaning youth vote (the "nietitos") she most vocally appeals to (the "twitter left", to give an idea), but polls suggest her supporters are usually non-political or centrists who either approve of the pension fund withdrawals that she's championed or are drawn to her celebrity status and media antics (I might give Jiles a lot of poo poo, but it's an absolute disgrace for the "proper" left that they haven't been able to win this crowd over if the bar is that low).

Anyway, Maltés has given a series of eyebrow-raising statements trying to appeal to Jiles's (assumed) crowd, including identifying as a "mestizo kuir (queer) non-binary transfeminist", the "twitter left" responded with skepticism, Jiles later confirmed that Maltés was indeed non-binary since She's Never hosed Him (???), LGBTQ activists responded this sounded like a lovely joke, Jiles shot back saying LGBTQ activist were acting like "gender cops", and also that if Maltés is elected She Will Finally gently caress Him (???) and livestream the event (???).

Y'know, the usual!

some links (in spanish):
https://www.eldesconcierto.cl/nacio...del-genero.html
https://www.chvnoticias.cl/viral/pamela-jiles-insiste-acabar-abstinencia-pablo-maltes-electo_20210514/

Anyway, my take is that this Won't Matter because 1) the "twitter left" is not Jiles's actual base of support, her actual base of support doesn't give a poo poo, they just need to withdraw their pension funds because they're desperate and this is a hell country, and 2) her base of support isn't actually engaged enough to vote for governor, because it has no direct relation to why they support Jiles in the first place.

So if by any chance Maltés does win, then that'd mean Jiles's supporters are in fact both politically engaged and don't give a poo poo about which ridiculous drama Jiles gets herself into each week (like, last month her kid was caught falsely claiming to be mapuche for Tiktok clout, last year her husband accused some leftist politician of having been a Pinochet era snitch who got a woman tortured, which was later denied by the woman's son, last week Jiles said this, i don't know, who loving cares, que se acabe chile), which would mean she's gonna win the presidentials by a landslide because none of the other prospective candidates has a following like that.

Re: chilean elections, results are only halfway in, but things don't seem too bad. Some real shitheads getting in, but overall the right is still short of the 1/3 it needed to effectively have veto power in the drafting of the new constitution. A fairly good showing for the communists too. Jadue was re-elected as mayor by a landslide, so this is a boost for his presidential chances.

Quoting my doomer post from the other day:

1. so far the right doesn't have the 1/3 it needs - it's debatable whether the other 2/3rds could be considered "the left", since by far the biggest winners tonight were independents (mostly left-leaning ones, granted, but you get all sorts), but since the constitutional proposals from everyone save for the right were fairly similar, a broad consensus should be possible.
2. she's winning by the largest majority in the country lmao
3. Jiles's husband ate poo poo so I guess he'll remain a virgin (???). Orrego (christian democrat, centrist) and Karina Oliva (Frente Amplio, left) are going to the runoff. Oliva will likely get obliterated, but it's highly significant that the right wasn't even able to make it to the runoff for what was likely the most important race of the night.

Residents of the Colombian city of Cali, the epicenter of protests against the government of Ivan Duque, are struggling under the weight of demonstrators’ road blockades, which have tripled some foods prices and made gasoline scarce.

The city - usually known for its love of salsa dancing - has had more confirmed deaths than any other during the demonstrations, which began in late April, as well as some looting.

Residents say it is urgent agreements be reached between protesters and the government so more food and fuel shipments can enter the city and to end the protests - the longest and most violent demonstrations in Colombia's recent history.
...
Protesters, who originally called marches against a now-canceled tax plan, have expanded demands to include a basic income, an end to police violence and education and jobs for young people, among other things.

The death toll from protests is disputed. The human rights ombudsman is investigating 41 civilian deaths, while the attorney general's office has confirmed 14.

At Puerto Resistencia, a working class area that has become a symbol of protests, demonstrators asked residents for calm.

"They don't have food, they have shortages, but lots of people live with daily shortages," said Elizabeth Serna, 40, leader of a blockade manned mostly by young people.

Blockades will continue until there is a deal with the government, she said.

“They must have patience because we’ll win this fight for everyone.”

As we KINDA lack a 'America attempting regime change, but everywhere else outside of Latin America' thread, here's a fun one from Belarus!

https://www.rt.com/russia/523956-regime-change-belarus-prank/

quote:

A pair of notorious Russian pranksters posing as leading Belarusian opposition figures have duped the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) into revealing the extent of US involvement in Eastern European political movements.

In a video call posted on the online channel of pranksters Vovan and Lexus, senior representatives of the American agency disclosed that they have actively financed and supported anti-government campaigns in the region. The officials from the NED, which is funded by Congress and describes its role as “supporting freedom around the world,” also revealed that they are coordinating efforts with prominent political activists in a range of countries, including Russia.

The officials believed they were talking to Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the figurehead of Belarus’ opposition movement, and one of her advisors.

During the call, Nina Ognianova, who oversees the NED's work with local groups in Belarus, outlined the wide-ranging programs the agency bankrolls in the country, insisting that “a lot of the people who have been trained by these hubs, who have been in touch with them and being educated, being involved in their work, have now taken the flag and started to lead in community organizing.”

Ognianova claimed that, through this work, the NED played a role in igniting the colossal street protests that rocked Belarus after long-time leader Alexander Lukashenko declared victory in the country’s presidential election last August. The opposition and many international observers say the vote was rigged in his favor, and tens of thousands took to the streets for demonstrations each weekend after the election.

“We believe that this long-term trust-building that we have had with partners in Belarus has indeed brought the events, or the build-up to the events, of last summer,” Ognianova stated.

“We don't think that this movement that is so impressive and so inspiring came out of nowhere - that it just happened overnight,” she added, “but it has been developing and we have our modest but significant contribution in that by empowering the local actors to do the important work.”

Carl Gershman, the president of the US state-backed agency, told the pranksters that Washington-based funding and policy groups were already working with Tikhanovskaya and her team “very, very closely.” He then asked the opposition figure, who fled to neighboring Lithuania after the election, to set out her thinking on the situation “so we can understand what your strategy is... and how we can be helpful.”

The comments are likely to add fuel to Lukashenko’s previous controversial claims that the widespread domestic opposition to his government is being stoked from abroad.

The pranksters also pushed the NED’s top team to outline their current activity in Russia, asking what they were doing to support anti-Kremlin activists. Gershman replied that such initiatives are “obviously incredibly important and we've emphasized this, going back to the election in August when the demonstrations were taking place in the Russian Far East, and people were connecting with each other and saying we share the same ideals, so we're very committed to helping on that, and we will - working with our networks and our institutes.”

One of the duo, claiming to be Tikhanovskaya's assistant, questioned this, saying, “I know that NED is prohibited in Russia now,” referencing a 2015 government decision declaring it to be an “undesirable NGO.” A number of the group's senior leadership team began to laugh, with Gershman insisting “that doesn't matter. We don't have offices, we're not like Freedom House or NDI [the National Democratic Institute] and the IRI [International Republican Institute], we don't have offices. So if we're not there, they can't kick us out.”

“But we support many, many groups and we have a very, very active program throughout the country, and many of the groups obviously have their partners in exile,” the fund's president added. “So we are very active and we can be very helpful on this issue.” He added that they were “of course” in touch with Leonid Volkov, a Lithuanian-based activist frequently described as the chief of staff of jailed Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny.

Barbara Haig, the deputy to the NED’s president for policy and strategy, also hinted at the potential scale of US funding for political groups, saying, “we have a very ample program in Russia” which “goes even down to the grassroots in provinces - oblasts - outside of Moscow. It is very deep and it is very broad.”

Both she and Gershman expressed concern about Russian military exercises billed to take place alongside Belarusian troops later this year, with Haig asking if the group should be “looking at the deployment of Russian military in the country and how that might be changing over time, and whether we should be raising this with some of our contacts.”

‘You don't have to worry’: Amnesty reveals it snubs inconvenient media and rights issues in prank call with ‘Navalny ally’
Somewhat ironically, Haig also insisted that opposition groups in Russia are concerned about purported efforts to infiltrate and monitor their activity, saying that “security is a huge issue.” How the NED's most senior figures came to speak with the pranksters, who kept their cameras turned off and spoke in an unconvincing imitation of Tikhanovskaya's voice, is unclear.

The pair, whose real names are Vladimir Kuznetsov and Alexey Stolyarov, have previously blagged their way into calls with the likes of Prince Harry, Amnesty International and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. However, they have been accused by some Western commentators of disproportionately targeting opponents of the Kremlin, with their comedy gotchas frequently seeking to generate political controversy.

The NED describes itself as a “private, non-profit, grant-making organization that receives an annual appropriation from the US Congress through the Department of State.” It acknowledges that its “continued funding is dependent on the continued support of the White House and Congress,” but states that its own “independent Board of Directors” is in charge of how the funds are spent. The agency insists that its “independence... also allows it to work with many groups abroad who would hesitate to take funds from the US Government.” Representatives of the NED have been approached for comment.
