oh and the extremely niche pc game "pillars of eternity 2: deadfire" is good though because it's about founding and defending the fantasy kingdom of hawaii from imperialist and capitalist forces and the three factions are written well enough that it doesn't fall into any noble savage crap and gets people online legit arguing that colonalism is the only way to "fix" the native society. plus the other main plot of the game is teaching the players the lesson of "well, this is going to piss off and kill a bunch of people but it's the only way to make the world a better place." you can try and do the badass gamer go at it alone thing and everything sucks for everyone because gently caress neutrality this has been my thoughts about which video game is good, thanks for listening

Deadfire was really good and I enjoyed the anti-colonialist sentiment reflected in it. The VTC was written with some unsubtle mirrors to Dole. Good writing, I was completely unsympathetic.

What about a Modern Warfare where you're a dude (or a lady, it's a modern war) and you're in a militia that the CIA has just declared a terrorist group. They were previously supporting you for a couple of months so you've got some new weapons, but the rest of your stuff are junk you inherited from the last century. Anyway the main problem is that the CIA also gave you a couple billion dollars in cash and gold, by accident, and that's why they want to kill you. So you have a home base of sorts which is a convoy of cars, technicals and trucks, roving between fights. You're trying to escort this pallet of money somewhere and the US has declared war on you and has put a couple million in bounty on so everyone else wants a piece as well. You gotta manage your people and your scarce resources. Main enemy: opposing militia, daesh fodder. Not well equipped at all. Elite enemies: actual regional soldiers with real body armour, fighting vehicles and all that. Boss fight: the US forces themselves. Every single enemy is heavily armoured and filled with combat stimulants so they're a slog to kill. If a fight lasts more than a few minutes you're going to be pounded by air strikes and artillery. Fortunately the CIA gave you some neat toys so you can actually take down tanks and helicopters surprisingly easily, but the more dollar damage you inflict the bigger the bounty gets. I don't know what the ending could be. Maybe a fistfight with Dick Cheney on top of the USS Ronald Reagan.

Studies seem to suggest that after around age 5 (so, when you should be able to start discerning fantasy from reality) violent video games aren't really causing antisocial behavior. There's nothing inherent to video games that makes them bad. It's more just about lovely greedy corporations who exploit everyone they can to make number go up and also the military gives them number to make pro-military plotlines.

video games are just media they have basically the same problems as movies, except their half-assed social aspects mean they also have many of the same problems as social media except with even less moderation, plus the industry actively caters to angry nerds which gives it a lot of the same problems that comics and tabletop gaming have

Video games featuring the military have been Hanoi Hilton and Rambo 2-3 style propaganda for a long time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-JUmTHkkFQ Check out the voice actor for Sergei Dekker when he has a gun to Hawks' head. The line was so drat stupid it almost sounds like the VA ironically had a gun pointed at his own head in the recording studio.
