Remember Talk To Transformer? Of course you do, we had a whole thread on it: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3889267
Meet Grover. It's a fake news generating AI based on the 1.5 billion parameter GPT-2. If you recall, Talk To Transformer was based on the 345 million parameter version.

History of Artificial Intelligence: 1945 to 1995

quote:

Written by Grover Womack, CNN

For people who may not have known much about artificial intelligence, you're about to get a crash course.

That's because in a series of eight short videos, CNN Science seeks to shed light on the earliest days of AI , from the first general purpose computers to universal translators.

And while these videos showcase the capabilities of powerful hardware, they also explore the psychological, economic and political implications of the development of what is perhaps the most significant technology of this century.

To mark the publication of Deep Mind Algorithms: Finding Intuitive Patterns (And Breaking Their Rules -- Amazon Kindle Edition), written by my colleague Jeff Martin, I spoke with historian and AI expert Nancy Judkins about her book and the pioneering work that occurred in the 1950s and 1960s.

Here are four historical lessons from our history:

1: Artificial intelligence is global in scope

The historical theme of AI is one of global reach. AI can't exist without AI, which is why human history has repeatedly seen how human ideas have first been localized.

"Artificial intelligence will forever transform every aspect of human life, as businesses, political leaders, and everyday people seek to design ingenious machines to perform a range of human tasks," Susan Lerner, executive director of Common Cause, told CNN.

2: AI is about fundamentally changing how we think about machines

It was the advent of computers in the 1950s that altered not only the way we interacted with them, but also fundamentally changed our understanding of machines.

"A machine as 'programmable logic' is fundamentally different than a machine that was 'programmed for work' -- this was what attracted most of the researchers to [AI]," Judkins said. For a long time, computers were seen as mere machines, said Judkins, but in the late 1950s, computer scientists began to emphasize the implications of a "symbiotic relationship" between humans and machines.

"When you describe something that was 'programmable logic' versus a machine that was 'programmed for work,' you're asking whether computers are in fact autonomous, free, and to grow in moral and ethical ways, since I can program anything that needs to be done," she explained.

3: AI led to increased public understanding of this technology

"In the 1950s and 1960s, as more people began to use computers for work, more people began to understand how important AI is to our futures. This made many of us feel passionate about using this technology, understanding it and promoting it," Judkins said.

That enthusiasm was spurred by a global focus on AI at the time. In 1961, the Rand Corporation, a nonprofit organization with a history that dates back to the American Revolution, organized an international conference that discussed the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace. And it was in the 1950s that Ronald Arkin's book "The Liberation of Artificial Intelligence" detailed the potential benefits of AI.

4: The history of AI shows it's not an end in itself

AI can be presented as a "science fiction event," Judkins said, but the fact that it has never existed is a fallacy. The achievement of AI is something that can be seen as a technological accomplishment. But it's about the next stage.

"When you'll look back on, well, all this stuff about AI, what will we look back on it as?" she asked. "And that will be, 'A great technological advance of one or two or many generations, but it is not the end of the line.' AI is there, but it's not the end. It's just the beginning."

I'd have something funnier and more worthless to post, but I've just discovered it. Talk To Transformer was already shocking, and yet I'm amazed by how competent and coherent this one is. It makes some points, and then expands them in detail. It understands logical sequence and can keep a narrative flow going. What's more, it typically generates much longer passages than Talk To Transformer— the longest I've seen it do is about 700 words (which is roughly 3 pages double spaced) and that's after only a few cycles (it might do even longer for all I know; most are between 500 and 600 words), whereas TTT did a maximum of about 350 words and often shorter than that.
The only pitfall is that it's specialized for fake news, but who knows. Maybe it can generate lyrics, poems, fiction, etc. I just haven't tried.
Have fun!

Man's Sexbot Tears Off His Penis

quote:

Written by Grover Womack, CNN
You can rest assured that the video doesn't end with this well. Rather, it ends with this traumatic event.
Credit: Matan Sofer
That's the irreverent summary given by roboticist and ICS fellow Matan Sofer as he explains how he detached his manhood from a female sexual robot he had bought.
Sofer is one of a handful of enthusiasts who have been creating their own sexbots in an effort to try out the increasingly sophisticated products -- which are marketed at customers with specific needs.
By hiring out these manly men to be sexbots in their own right, they might "offer a bit of relief for men who find it hard to satisfy their sexual urges," Sofer told CNN.
The Swedish-based researcher says he stopped owning his own penis and implanted his own tissue -- internally and externally -- to recreate it on his SRS humanoid robot, shortly after buying his first sexbot.
Having "experimented with a few robots," Sofer says that he began to realize what a powerful response sexbots could be to the "mood and psychological problems that plague men in a number of social, political and economic contexts."
He says that members of his team frequently see the positive role such technology can play.
"Men and women everywhere have been searching for the power to satisfy their sexual urges," he wrote in an email to CNN. "Sexbots exist to complement 'normal' human sexuality, to humanize it and therefore, to help the human beings fulfill their sexual needs."

"What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!"

quote:

BBC
Cathy Malone, the star of the second series of Red Dwarf, was not sent to interview Sir Oliver Letwin. She wanted to quiz him about a character she played, husband to the future prime minister. Letwin is not amused.
Red Dwarf, which begins its 13th series on 21 June, charts the adventures of an intergalactic team attempting to solve all the growing global problems using outdated, but rather effective tools. In the first episode Malone's character speaks about the hidden dangers in the area they are researching: "You know what a man is? A miserable little pile of secrets."
The clip above does not show their encounters. Take that, Sir Oliver.
The rivalry between Sir Oliver Letwin and Amanda Abbington was building the perfect platform for Malone to question him over her character's words. This is what "a man is". This is what a man is when he hides behind the teachings of an equally homoerotic animated series.
Spoilers for the first episode:
"They’re after all that chocolate smeared everywhere!" (Alan Partridge)
"They’re wasting all that chocolate on the girls, they’re sitting in your laps as you’re feeding them!" (Uncle Toby)
"Are you able to take up a leadership position without the help of your employers, the dude?" (Alan Partridge)
"The gentry is very scared of women. They are very afraid, that's why they put as many women in as they can." (Alan Partridge)

Everyone Is Gay, US Government Declares. "And that includes you," says President Truman

quote:

SALINA, Texas — The President addressed an estimated 4,000 men and women who, on the 4th of July, 1924, gathered for a recognition in east Texas of their right to be homosexual. The celebrated list of lesbian and gay organizations — the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, known formally as the Democratic Party of the White House — issued a statement on the occasion of the President’s address, noting that President Truman’s action “was cheered by thousands of citizens throughout the U.S.”
Lamenting the prospect of legislation that would protect the rights of homosexuals and lesbians and give them the same protection as anyone else in our country, President Truman averred: “I tell you this,” the President said, “and that includes you. There are hardly any laws in the U.S.
“There are practically no statutes making it a crime to be both a homosexual and a woman. In fact, no one has ever been indicted or sent to jail for being a homosexual.”
Praising the women for all their work throughout history, and for their wholehearted “conclusion to commit your lives to your children”; the President declared that the constitution “grants you the freedom to be gay or lesbian, that you are not in trouble any more than any heterosexual has been.”
President Truman said: “I want you to know you are not alone…that every citizen is responsible for the defense of our democratic way of life. Your struggle against bigotry is part of the struggle for democratic rights and civil liberties.”
“The problem in our society,” the President declared, “is too often the attempt to deprive other citizens of the freedom they have. Those who can do so, those who can force others to follow in their footsteps, are guilty of a great crime and ought to be severely punished by the law.”

Hardscaping usually starts with a good foundation. It would be silly, both safety and efficiency-wise, to begin any of your home improvement projects with the foundation needed to support them, since the better the foundation, the less work, and therefore the more high productivity, is needed to put it in place. Well there are plans that are perfect for this climate of any size home: Loadbearing drywall, a product that was developed and manufactured by Mike Paul of HighTight.

These walls are comprised of a lightweight polyurethane panel that is fully drywall strong but uses half the volume of the typical drywall thinner, making this a much lower cost and safe construction option, not to mention saving a ton of time to install. The wood trim used is also highly weather-resistant and does not leave a pry mark, leaving a smooth finish no matter how jarring the weather.
Alcohol or vinegar is added to separate the sheeting from the backing and creates a waterproof coating that provides great durability and allows good moisture infiltration throughout the entire wall structure. It is completely dry and we did a dry-walling demo on it that produced a water absorption and leak protection coefficient of 1.15 – a vast improvement over what most builders use now.

With this new drywall I feel that I am protecting the home better, it is more efficient at performance, it is lightweight and there is no plaster behind. In many cases if a wall is the first thing that builders have to do, builders take that layer out and are looking for solutions that are low-risk and high productivity to accomplish the goal. Loadbearing drywall removes all of the worries, allowing builders to accomplish their goals by getting the work done with safety.

For example, if a homeowner wants to put up their laundry room addition without a lot of complexity on site, installing a loadbearing wall would be the easiest and cheapest option on the shelf. Besides making the added room small and easy to install, a loadbearing wall is also fairly safe and easy to operate and maintain. Bricks or any other rock or other quarry material used as floor and a slab is typically left on the walls so the home’s foundations don’t suffer any soil stress when using drain tile. Most of the newer drywalling systems have this type of infrastructure built into the design, either at the framing company or at the roofing store. With loadsbearing drywall it is a step further. It would make the installation of this type of vertical panel in construction a lot easier, result in less disruption to the area and maintain most everything else as it was.

For homeowners who are already heavy drywall users who are looking for a way to get their drywall up faster, loadbearing wall technology is ideal for them. The interesting thing is that loadbearing wall, with the added benefit of the new house stock, is cutting out many of the expensive manufacturers out there. Bulk drywall, as well as bottles of drywall adhesive still used in yards, can cost upwards of $3 per square foot to install.

Mike Paul, one of the original founders of Progressive Drywall, pioneered the spray drywall process in 1980, using a moldable polyester, like Teflon, application sheet, which dries completely in 5 minutes or less, and doing some serious engineering to achieve his goals for moisture and construction safety as well as energy consumption, making him the pioneer in this area.
More and more home builders, contractors and others are starting to use Loadbearing Drywall because of its unique design and a lot of that has to do with cost savings. Loadbearing wall, by utilizing shorter components, less cardboard to insert into the house, and a substantially lower texture used in cutting and attaching to walls, allows the homeowner to add the room much faster and at a much lower cost. With 10 fold in price efficiency, this makes this a well worth consideration in any house. But if it is adding value, and is bringing out the high productivity and high levels of performance in your house, with build times reduced by only 5 hours, you might want to look into installing it over a splitter board, which is one of the downsides, and also has a spill area of roughly 1 square foot.

This is a nice way to turn the residence into an indoor backyard, or a backyard inside the home.

You can think of it as the most effective tool for a weary workforce, combining the capabilities of a hammer, saw and hammer with the charming gentleness of a torch. Lubricated with ethylene glycol, Teflon has been a workhorse for decades in construction, interior finishes and graffiti removal. Lately, it has gotten a bit pricey — since it provides no traction, goosed prices began to creep up, and thousands of Britons lined up to buy it at exclusive outlets.
Now, though, the hammer-whipper comes back in favor, in what the favorite Simon Cowell song might say is its full day’s work — the sort of thing you get when you back out from the contracts, grade yourself, and think, Who needs all those bad reviews? You have not been able to stick with a project long enough, and you want to sell it. Anyway, you know that the dreams that rush out of your brain with Teflon’s heat are not dreams of the price you are paying.
According to the article “How to Sell Everything on a 1% Margin,” Brits spent £5 million at the John Lewis department store over the weekend, according to the Guardian newspaper. And while some shoppers were inspired by the irresistible appeal of the Teflon company, others were merely after Teflon for status, said Amanda Bradburne, of the high-end vinyl goods shop, Westfield. “People try and sell off stuff at London Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week, so it’s more a catch-up thing,” she said.
At the John Lewis store on Bond Street, Robert Stone and Edward Firth, took their two kids to pick up a few things. Mr. Stone is 27 and studying for a masters degree in biology.
“I don’t think I want to sell anything,” he said, before settling on a fluorescent orange hanging wall by Rachel & Peter by Josie Maran. Mr. Firth, 37, a freelance photographer, is married with one child. His wife works in child care, and the couple has been living with him since she went back to work a year ago.
Mr. Firth bought a jar of Paprika Slaw mix for his wife. “That’s the must-have!” he said. He went on to buy a six-pack of beer for himself and his child.
For now, for the family of three, Teflon will do just fine. But, I asked Mr. Firth, can you tell when it’s getting into its prime as a product?
“I look for it when I get confused,” he said. “If I’m explaining the names of things that I am putting on my walls.”
The family will test their house out in some way the next time they visit London, he said. But, “once the plaster starts crumbling.”
It’s not going to look much different when it’s brand new, I said.
“I think by a while next year, people won’t have a headache from it,” he said.

There's a monster at the end of this book

quote:

When Hal Jobson’s short stories expand into novels, they rise to the level of epic. His new novel, The Frankenstein Monster, is one of the most important modern novels of science fiction. As such, it is, as Jobson writes in his introduction, an echo of Frankenstein’s creator Mary Shelley’s creations, with the High Priestesses of Science — a.k.a. the parasites and bloodsuckers — modeled after the villainous Godself, and the Creature, representing the God of the Dead — both of which now live on.
God’s catchphrase from Frankenstein (quoted in the novel’s author’s notes) is “It is the freedom to devise a new thing, which grows and lives and eventually obeys your will and becomes you.” That is Jobson’s theme throughout The Frankenstein Monster.
The Monster appears as much in his past as in his present. The writer’s tale is told from two points of view. However, at the end of the book, Jobson’s narrator, Steven Walters, has changed places with Noah, in the future, who is narrating a different point of view. Once the two narrators meet, they discover they have been running parallel stories of Creation. Walters is “a Frankenstein” and Noah is “a Noble Monster.”
The two narrator’s story begins when Prometheus, a late-aged, overexposed prophet of God, is “literally killed by another of his creations” — God’s beloved world. The new God, after violent deluge,, is described as in charge of “all blood and its endless possibilities, its salvation and its disease.” God, the writer notes, is “absolutely God.”
So when Jobson sees Jobson’s “Noble Monster” as an archetype of God, then the current version of the Monster, perhaps, is God. The question, Jobson notes, is the difference between a God-like creature and a god. The novelist, who is true to his intention, thinks he knows the answer: Satan is the Devil. Indeed, the prophesier Jobson feels “while Jobson thinks God is the Angel.”
Because Jobson writes about God, and God is most iconic of all humans, it’s tempting to interpret Jobson’s novel, set on Earth in an alternate 19th century America, as telling a story of God’s diminishment.
God is eclipsed by a force, revealed here, an eros, is manifested here, a sexual appetite, according to Jobson, whose narrator is “God’s Mistress” who is “a woman no husband would trust a night.” A role reversal is not wrong. The writer’s tale, which is believable despite Jobson’s overt theological ambition, is not about God, but the Frankenstein monster, whose embodiment is God, who, of course, is the original Frankenstein.
Looking at Jobson’s monster in relation to God, J.B. Priestley suggested in 1948 that the book was “irresponsible not to interpret the story as Freud does (God says to Jesus, just as Jesus says to God, ‘Let there be light’). I have always felt that God, since he is called God, had to make humanity the protagonist of his life. He has to be our master.”
Hilary Porter is a news and social media editor for The Atlantic.
A Lecture by Jobson [Extras]
Jobson has been in print since 1958, much of his work was translated into languages, his stories were frequently anthologized, his first novel, The Owl Tapes (1972), won the prestigious Lemmon Prize, and his Booker-shortlisted second novel, Yellow Bricks (1976), was a bestseller.
The Frankenstein Monster was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 1979 and won the John Paul Wilson Prize in 2006. Jobson also authored a novel in the 1990s, Is It So Wrong To Want to Be a Feminist Writer? (2000). He was awarded the Richard C. Levin Prize in 2004 and the National Book Award in 2007.

Donald Trump Orders Military Strikes on Pyongyang

quote:

Donald Trump authorized military strikes on North Korea to silence the “threatening rhetoric and behavior” from the rogue regime, the president said on Wednesday.
“We have decided to take pre-emptive military action in response to North Korea’s continued threatening rhetoric and behavior,” Mr. Trump told reporters on board Air Force One en route to California.
Mr. Trump and members of his administration, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, National Security Adviser John Bolton, and South Korean President Moon Jae-in have for some time denounced the conduct of Kim Jong-un’s regime and have stressed that they are working toward the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.
But on Wednesday morning Mr. Trump said that “effective immediately” the U.S. would “remove the threat” posed by Kim Jong-un’s regime. He added that “provocations” against the U.S. and its allies in the region would now result in an immediate military response.
“We are going to take care of it,” Mr. Trump said. “It’s going to be taken care of.”

Trump administration officials were quick to work to clarify the President’s statement in the hours following the announcement. On Thursday, Pompeo denied that Mr. Trump had indeed ordered military strikes against North Korea and said that the President had only mentioned an “eye for an eye” approach in response to Kim Jong-un’s intercontinental ballistic missile tests, which last year included the launch of a missile over the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.
“What the President said was that we may be forced to take additional measures, not to name which country, but he said to take it to the next level if North Korea does not stop,” Pompeo said. “Our message is North Korea has a choice, either behave responsibly, engage in genuine denuclearization or, as the President said, ‘we are going to start escalating the pressure.'”
Pompeo was more circumspect in his responses to the president’s on Thursday.
“I am confident that the president and the military leadership that he has put in place in terms of Cabinet chiefs and others, that’s all of us have that responsibility to make sure that we are prepared and that we are taking appropriate steps,” he said.
But he also left the door open to the possible deployment of U.S. forces north of the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea.
“America’s mission is to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the weapons of mass destruction, and we will continue to be prepared to defend ourselves, and by the American people,” Pompeo said.
It is impossible to predict the precise consequences of any military action against North Korea. “This is uncharted territory. It’s unthinkable for this president and for this administration,” a senior White House official told CNN.
The next test for the Trump administration will be in its commitment to maintaining U.S. diplomatic and military ties with North Korea. Trump has not ruled out a summit with Kim Jong-un to discuss the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. It is unknown whether any specific message has been conveyed to the North Korean government over Mr. Trump’s latest military strike announcement.

Iran Defeats US Offensive In Persian Gulf, Inflicts 100,000 Casualties In One Day In Worst Military Defeat In US History

quote:

Photo
Iran defeated the United States in the Persian Gulf by scoring a near-total diplomatic and military victory in a humiliating defeat that could not happen unless the United States had a longstanding strategy that could be quickly and convincingly turned against Iran.
It may be the most gruesome defeat in US military history, and well outside the historic range of anything the United States has lost during its so-called 100 years of war.
“These guys did a lot of damage,” said one American official, confirming a report on CBS This Morning that between 100,000 and 120,000 were killed. He said these casualty estimates could be five to 10 times more than previous estimates by the Islamic Republic.
About 200,000 U.S. troops had been stationed in the region to defend oil interests, protect freedom of navigation in the narrow Strait of Hormuz, conduct counterterrorism operations and, after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, to guard U.S. and allied forces against Iraq and Iran.
For Iran, this was its moment of glory, proving that it could hold off the vastly superior United States military for a crucial section of its own 6,500-mile long, 25,000-mile wide (38,866-kilometer) coastal territory. And after Iran succeeded, the United States sought to reverse the defeat by telling Iranian officials that Iran was in the wrong in order to contain the embarrassment and renew positive relations.

What's wrong with your faaaaaaaaace?

As a bombshell in her book “The Bitch in the House,” actress Jenna Bush Hager described working as a TV news reporter for six years in the 1990s when she said that all her coworkers got along and hosted a nightly party — but she was a constant source of tension.
“I knew I was a tease,” Hager said in her book. “But it didn’t matter; I enjoyed the attention. The other girls teased me on my looks, as I would tease them on theirs; I teased them on their drive.”
Later, Hager told Cosmopolitan that she was the only white person in the room, so that made people uncomfortable and “they'd ignore me a lot.” And it also meant the most gossip-worthy stories happened to her.
“The one about the car,” she said, including seeing her being sniped at by a male co-worker while she was wearing a short black dress. “I remember me standing in the studio driveway and, nobody going to pick me up, being sullen.”
What was your most memorable co-worker mean to you or a time you found out they were unkind to you — or they knew you were unkind to them?
And if you had something nice to say about somebody, did they understand that or care? Did you have to resort to your mean nickname to get their attention? And how did they respond to you when you called them out on being mean to you?

I’ve been keeping a track of the actions the presidents of our major nations take in response to developments in extraterrestrial exploration. There are only two left. Donald Trump is the last in the line: he’s allegedly instructed his agencies not to do any further testing of this robust technology in the public’s interest. On the contrary, Trump seems to have asked agencies to conduct even more scientific testing and space exploration programs.
Of course, I am also keeping an eye on developments in artificial intelligence and robots, given that I am teaching classes in these areas. Currently, Amazon’s Alexa, rather than Domino’s, is the order automaton to beat.
No spoilers here, I am not a conspiracy theorist or expert in these issues, and don’t really play around with the rumors of aliens and other extraterrestrial organizations.
I do not want to make light of serious investigations, especially since humanity has received the warning that it may someday encounter an alien race, just as we have encountered humanity.
Just last year, an alien species was seen in Hawaii, while the filmmakers of 10 Cloverfield Lane visited a museum in Iceland displaying rare drawings by J.R.R. Tolkien (which are, not coincidentally, alleged alien artifacts). Because of the profits the films have made, and the high probability that the films hold some secret information about our civilization, it’s likely that such dramatic visions of extraterrestrial civilizations remain true.
You have to realize that there is a strong possibility that human beings do not know whether or not they are alone in the universe. If such reality presents life with a challenge or even death, it’s hard to imagine how our governing institutions will succeed. If a natural disaster poses a danger to this society, will it be able to choose between the immediate needs of all, or will it choose between its values and those of the superhuman beings who might inhabit other planets?
Future governments would have to decide whether to ask for weapons or money for space exploration, and which demands would receive favor and praise. President Trump appears to have set up a system that now does not have to make such big decisions at such a high level.
But aliens present us with new and alluring demands, like a decision on whether to increase space travel research grants or to scale back their program. They are well known for their self-serving characteristics.
Any real solution to their formidable problems will require interference, since they have too many enemies to defeat on their own.

John Romero Announces Daikatana Sequel

quote:

John Romero, the co-creator of Quake and Doom along with co-founder of id Software, has announced a sequel to the Doom-developed horror game Daikatana.
Romero announced the news in a tweet, saying: "Until now, only grudgingly I watched on as my concepts from Daikatana flew around the internet like the demented wastes of eternal space, like lumps of castor oil or lizard flesh. WISH UPON GOD IN SEPTEMBER, 2019".
It's such a bizarre and disappointing statement from Romero that it almost hurts, but it's such an incredibly first person shooter where you're fighting invisible monsters, leaping over third of the human population. In the end, the whole thing was cool but being a developer and id veteran (including running id's hit title Doom) I'd be ashamed to reveal such a disgusting attempt at delivering out-of-date thrills to gamers.
It's unclear at this point whether or not the game will be officially coming out, as fans don't have much to go on other than Romero's statement and a possibly PC-only teaser page with a black screen. Daikatana was always a very complex game and the development team would probably go nuts trying to salvage the project. But if Romero isn't keen on Daikatana at the current stage I'm not sure how much the game is likely to pick up going forward.

Unsurprisingly, Star Wars broke it.

quote:

As the story goes, he was born into slavery, fled his home in Anakin’s home planet of Tatooine, and never returned. But imagine if this enslaved mechanic had a powerful Force-wielding master?
During a brief meeting between Darth Plagueis and Darth Vader on Mustafar in Episode I, Palpatine has two powerful secrets of his own to share with his apprentice.
The first is his genius for planning and strategy, and his own innate wisdom for locating hidden installations beneath environments like caves and planet outcroppings.
The second was that he knew that Anakin’s sister, Amidala, had a special talent for learning spells — and had likely already spoken with him, because she was her father’s longtime student.
This exchange has stuck with Obi-Wan Kenobi as he travels between the two warring sides in Episode IV, “A New Hope.” He tells the young Luke Skywalker about Darth Plagueis as he attempts to train him to use the Force:
“I know,” Luke replies. “And he was a master of manipulation, as well. A great war maker, as we know from the Clone Wars books. For the most part, Anakin tried to rely on coincidence, hoping it would work out the way he wanted it to. And it did for him. But he couldn’t resist someone who could plan or bring it to pass on a level that he couldn’t.”
Pilots of the Millennium Falcon disagree with Obi-Wan’s assessment of Anakin’s ability to use the Force on a level that cannot be scripted or physically achieved. Han Solo asks, “Where?” Obi-Wan answers, “The force.”
Pilots of the Millennium Falcon disagree with Obi-Wan’s assessment of Anakin’s ability to use the Force on a level that cannot be scripted or physically achieved. Han Solo asks, “Where?” Obi-Wan answers, “The force.”
Many of the twists and turns from Episode I and the movies came about through the narrative device of an out-of-control Sith being compelled to reveal information by one of the Rebellion’s many pieces of technology — a lightsaber, a ship, or an electronic system.
The chaos being wreaked by Darth Vader’s apprentice fell perfectly into place. Darth Plagueis was able to get out of the carbonite chamber. The growth of the Emperor would effectively produce a tyrant with more power than the Emperor. But it wouldn’t have come about if Darth Plagueis had known that Luke Skywalker was his master and would train him in the ways of the Force.
Plans were ruined, but history — and fate — reversed itself. Darth Vader would become a hero and among the most powerful Jedi the galaxy has ever known. Luke Skywalker would learn to be a Jedi Knight. And the early starter Darth Plagueis, who just four years earlier had outlived his entire family, would learn that he didn’t have enough power to defeat the Sith — unless he had the help of a powerful master like Luke Skywalker.
This “one-upmanship” of the past seems to be how Obi-Wan Kenobi concluded the fight that began all those years ago.

Butts Are Delicious

quote:

Whenever fashion critic Cathy Horyn offers an opinion about clothes or accessories, it can be safely assumed she means it. So perhaps it’s fitting that it’s her essay in The New York Times about the production of a restaurant’s pointy-toothed dog that should in retrospect have been the most entertaining.
Cathy Horyn on Butts, a Dog, and Foodies
The concept for the restaurant’s dog, a poodle called Butts, was borne of dismay, Horyn writes, during a recent trip to Iceland: “dining on dogs, dogs at the table,” she writes. “People have dogs on their faces, and I couldn’t bring myself to eat one.”
The disappointment continued with the moment she crossed the threshold of the restaurant, where she noticed that the dog, sitting in a nearly empty glass bowl, was large and beautiful. “It was stupendous,” she writes. “It was Jaws, her father, hovering over the table. She could have been a Big Bad Wolf, not a dog.”
So Horyn decided to ask the owners to assemble “a dog” on-site at their restaurant, and while in between the meal, for a couple of hours before service, they filled her with the weird thrill of a behind-the-scenes glimpse at something that happens every day: the effort it takes to make a restaurant dog a success.

SomethingAwful.com creator Lowtax abandons Forum

quote:

WishfullHockey.com founder and SomethingAwful co-founder Rob Green has announced that he is shutting down the popular forum that has been a fixture on the web for more than a decade, this after a vicious back-and-forth with a woman named Corinne Lapp in which he ranted about how she was painting himself into a corner. The dispute got heated enough to bring about a website with a forged profile of Lapp, who alleged that she had nothing to do with the Rumble forum in the first place, but that she had been threatened by Lowtax into retracting that statement. She did not.
When Green found out that she was trying to derail his case by reenacting the trolling act on Twitter, he reached out to Lapp. “Just found out that on Twitter, I was blamed for an inteview that my friend did with her,” Green wrote in a message to Lapp. “Was just going to knock some rumors back and show her the love. Than when I did see her, I came to her defence, b/c I don’t hate women. But when I did that, what some people deemed a ‘bullying’ approach to try and get her to comment.”
The statement then got all hateful, as Lowtax essentially reenacted the example Lapp had laid out in the takedown letter he had originally received from the site’s administrator, clearing her name from the allegations that she had actually been the one being harassed and abusing him. He then went on to profess to being “embarrassed” and “betrayed” by Lapp, whom he accused of manufacturing an account to harass him. Lapp was immediately back at it, though, claiming that Lowtax’s victim shaming was an “rear end-sucking, dirtbag behavior that stinks, but that won’t stop me for fighting back against anyone who puts me down.”
Lowtax, whose patently Nazi avatar was seen by many sites as a big component of his Reddit campaign, announced on Monday night that he was dismantling the forum, though he, of course, did not offer an apology. “I think it’s fair to say that very few of the people behind the ‘subreddit’ are really pro-Reddit as a whole, or pro-SEO as a whole,” he wrote, not failing to mention the white supremacist crowd that he works with. “A few are, but mostly, the moderators and participants are, or were, a bunch of sheer individuals on their way in to Reddit and decided to throw a few hell-bent people under the bus to get some ‘attention.’” He also warned them to “stay away from the site, [y]ou’ll never get invited back in.”
Green, on the other hand, is no fan of “devastating feedback” and stressed that he was keeping the forum alive as a way to keep users “fairly informed” on what was happening in Reddit. It’s unclear, though, if any new posts will even be made there going forward.

For many years, many Washingtonians have looked up to President Donald Trump’s motorcade when it does something sweet and benevolent, as you do when puked through a bathroom stall after a gigantic bowel movement. But not on Tuesday.
In a photo put out by The White House photographer, Melody McDonald, you can see a stunned senior White House staffer look up in horror, sickened and dazed as Trump goes and breaks the pipes on the toilet in the West Wing’s small kitchen, which is adjacent to the Oval Office.
Trump later returned to the Oval Office, where he promptly shed his black tie and tossed his aide’s items across the chamber floor before taking the traditional presidential stage in front of the U.S. Capitol and uttering the words, “Mission Accomplished.”
Following a period of Donald Trump trying to wash up behind the White House, there’s a lighter moment in the Oval Office. Watch the @whitehouse video of Trump trying to clean up his mess behind the @WhiteHouse walls. pic.twitter.com/fvpLByO9Ff — CSPAN (@cspan) May 29, 2019
That’s right. The two-term president (who just met with his prime minister and made a formal state visit to London) celebrated a small victory in his years-long war on the pipes, ending the boil-up behind the White House’s elegant pink walls in this quick removal by the commander in chief.

Radiohead and Tool Merge to Form New Supergroup

quote:

British rock acts Radiohead and Tool are teaming up to form a new supergroup, Codename: Suicide. Bassist Colin Greenwood has confirmed the news on Twitter and posted a photograph that appears to be of him with guitarist Tony Hajjar and drummer Mikkey Dee in the studio. The image was captioned with the group’s tagline, “Original Sandwich.”
On Tuesday, Hajjar revealed the band’s newest lineup: “We have a core of three drummers (Mikkey Dee, Colin Greenwood, and Geoff Barrow),” he wrote on Twitter. “We also have Tony Hajjar on the piano and Colin’s brother, Steve Greenwood on woodwinds and percussion (Haydn Greenwood and Dean Cook are our occasionally touring trumpeters).”
Hajjar added that the group is rehearsing and “we are very excited to go on the road later this year and we hope everyone will come along for the ride with us. We are also working on new projects with Colin and John Leckie from the Radiohead.”
Radiohead has already confirmed that Greenwood has rejoined the band in 2019. “Dear friends, we were wondering if you could help us find a new double bass player?” Radiohead’s official Twitter account posted in March. “Colin Greenwood decided to go back to Radiohead, which we completely understand.”
Last month, Hajjar added the band had been rehearsing since early April. “#dating #suicide we have been rehearsing since early April and I am really happy with the shape of the band,” he wrote on Twitter. “Been busy at the piano at home, getting ready for a huge summer of tour with all our friends. Working with @JohnLeckie_RR is great as well.”
While there have been no details regarding the scope of the tour, Hajjar did tease that Tool would be playing “a number of dates starting in Europe early in the year, and a few Stateside dates later on in the year.” Hajjar added that the band still hopes to bring in a new member by the end of 2019.

A previous version of this article misstated Mike Pence’s title as vice president. The article has been corrected.
Via his pro-Trump website, you can find a video that implies the vice president is gay and bisexual.
The video, titled “Mike Pence: A Profile of Man,” includes an interview with a man who goes by the pseudonym “Michael Koehler.” According to the profile, Mr. Koehler went to high school with Mr. Pence, a 1968 graduate of Leesburg Catholic, which is a Catholic school.
“I’m a little superstitious as far as who I trust and what kind of cover I put behind myself,” the Koehler said. “Mike and I did say we hadn’t heard from each other since we graduated high school, but I was able to find a record of our alma mater in Leesburg, Virginia.”
He described being interviewed for a job by Mr. Pence in 1983.
“I remember Mike at his desk — smoking and sipping on beer, and completely clueless about social media,” he said. “He came out of a corner at me, like God, and asked me about my diet. I told him I was vegetarian. He said, ‘Finally someone wants to put it to you in a positive light.'”
See a transcript of the interview here, and watch the video here.
It’s fair to wonder what Mr. Pence, who has said that he and President Trump did not know one another before their 2016 presidential run, was thinking when he appeared on stage with the right-wing activists by his side during a far-right fringe event in March.
“He is doing it for a reason, to continue demeaning and insulting the LGBTQ community,” Mr. Koehler said. “He certainly did that in 2000 when he ran for governor. I know that from first-hand experience.”
The Pence campaign referred questions to a conservative website, Newsmax.com, but did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
A 1983 high school yearbook from Pence’s time at Leesburg Catholic, The Patriot, was posted on social media this week. The photo of Mr. Pence appeared to have been altered to show more stubble on his upper lip. At the time, Mr. Pence was dressed in a business suit and tie.
“I think it is just another cynical ploy by the liberal media, as a few of their own noted,” Mr. Pence’s communications director Jarrod Agen said in a statement to The Associated Press. “And, we will continue to ignore them and focus on what matters most to the American people: promoting the President’s agenda and protecting our agenda from these and other baseless attacks.”
Below is the original photo of Mr. Pence as a senior at Leesburg Catholic.

However, while this app is available in the U.S., it only allows you to uncover your nearest flesh-eating monster-in-transition if you’re a West Coaster. But, that’s also okay—people are free to swipe right or left depending if they’re in need of a good slumber party, more enjoyable jaunts in the realm of the supernatural, or not-so-impressive cupid-joke-creatures. (When in doubt, go with the snacks.)
The Intuition-built team of planners, marketers, and M&M lovers also took the time to create a "Restricted Area Guide" for New Yorkers interested in seeing if they can uncover anyone between a living and non-living type in their hood. It’s designed to connect patrons of a particular area, but yes—it provides information to see if your landlord may have two of the previously discussed critters—but those eager to know if they can find one or both, can do so through the location icon within the app.
More info about how it works can be found here. Find Entrent available for both iOS and Android starting May 30. And remember: whether it’s your birthday or you’re just craving some quality time with a fantastical creature, chances are they’re right next door.

Rich Evans Elected President of the United States of America. "Oh My God," President Evans said.

quote:

StockTON, CA (CNN) -- Rich Evans, an American businessman, Republican donor and former member of Congress has been elected president of the United States.
Unanimous, according to CNN.
The former president of Central Pacific Bank and the grandson of President William Howard Taft spoke to members of his congressional district in St. Marys, California around 5 p.m. on Friday, shortly after news broke that he was elected the GOP's vice presidential nominee.
"Oh my God," Evans said, according to CNN affiliate KTVU, "I got to see the filing card."
Evans had been battling with Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach for the nomination in Kansas' 4th Congressional District. Evans emerged as the clear frontrunner earlier in the day on Friday after Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder, who lost his re-election bid earlier this year, said he would not run for a third term.
During his acceptance speech, he said the ticket was a "momentous mandate," and that both he and the vice presidential candidate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, "shouldering this extraordinary burden, will carry this nation forward."
On Saturday, Evans reportedly said in a telephone interview that he has been looking for "momentum all of my life," to get back into elected office and that there is no other candidate for president that he would rather be on.
"I just couldn't pass up this opportunity to be on the ballot," Evans said.
Evans, a life-long Republican who first represented his district in Congress from 1983 to 1994 and later served on the San Francisco County Board of Supervisors, said Friday he hopes the ticket can lead the party out of its current administration.
He acknowledged that voters may be unhappy with President Donald Trump but that they should not shy away from that fact.
"If he gets no credit for what he is doing, then it won't be a wise thing," Evans said. "He is a bombastic, political leader, and I don't think the American people want another four years of empty suits."
Evans said his life as an ex-Congressman could come back to bite him. If Pence is chosen to be Trump's running mate, Evans added, he has already had some calls from his former colleagues asking if he wants the House seat.
"I do not want it," Evans said. "I am very, very sorry and sincerely regret having to say that, but you know things are doing what they're supposed to do, and I have the wherewithal to take care of my constituents."

So close, it was so close to Republican Representative Kevin Yoda. You let me down, Grover.

Milwaukee Native Mike "Plinkett" Stoklasa to Become Next Premier of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. "Oh," Premier Stoklasa Has Said.

quote:

Belfast. July 6, 2018 (SensMedia) -- Mike "Plinkett" Stoklasa who served for 21 years in the Royal Irish Constabulary has admitted that he did not serve his time for killing Jimmy Deenihan. During the days of the last heavy bombing campaign, Deenihan was a police officer and patrol was attacked and shot to death on a Belfast street. Stoklasa, a gully-digger on the support section, shot Deenihan from point blank range. He later murdered three more plain-clothed police and another young man during the bombing campaign which included a number of other horrific terrorist acts that killed between 86 and 207 people. All of these cowardly crimes were carried out as the loyalist commander of the IRA was recently a guest at a funeral of one of the republican terrorists who later "declared his/her/their death" by blowing up their own car in the middle of one of their own roads.
Mike Stoklasa was convicted in July of 1995, arrested by the Police Service of Northern Ireland and convicted of directing terrorist action. He was later released from prison in 1999, and went to live in Ireland in the 1980's and 80's and decided to return to the USA in 2001. When Mike returned to the USA, he stated in his interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer that he did not go back to Ireland because he was fearful of yet another prison term for his past and found the Irish "island" to be a very rough environment for him, especially as a bloklatt (retired) cop.
When referring to his arrest and recent release, in December of 2016, Mike Stoklasa exclaimed that, "They didn't just give me the runaround the way they did the Irish, I didn't just walk out of prison a free man, I surrendered to the FBI." He pointed out that he is not a "reconciliation guy" but a "standing-up person", a force to be reckoned with, someone to be reckoned with. He then disclosed in his CNN interview that when he was in prison for his many terrorist acts, he was hung up several times because it was thought that he had brought weapons to prison which he knew nothing about.
In 2018, Mike "Plinkett" Stoklasa was part of a two-man charade during the swearing-in of the next premier of the Soviet Socialist Republics who had being born in Milwaukee and living there from age 23. "Wow!" exclaimed Mike to the camera when asked what it meant for him to be an elected official in the Soviet Socialist Republic of the United States. "I don't want to bash the terrorists that committed these horrible crimes", he stated , "but I really believe in a free state so I'm glad to be here. I'm proud to call my country home and I am extremely excited that I can put my home state to such a great use in the fight against terrorism." Mike Stoklasa was a police officer for 21 years and retired in September 1996. He was chairman of the Milwaukee Heights Anti-Car Bomb Strikeforce. He is a disabled veteran and his mother is 96 years old.

Darn Fine Pie

Does anybody want a Pizza roll?

quote:

Pizza Roll is a popular pie topping at Southside Kitchen in Savannah, Georgia. The restaurant offers 28 toppings, including potatoes, mushrooms, onions, and bacon. But the long list of proteins inspired a press conference this week by the advocacy group Climate Hawks Vote, which is a proponent of Democrat hopefuls who are committed to climate-friendly policies.
“Pizza Roll, when you put a pile of pizza on it, is hotter than they are,” Climate Hawks Vote policy director Aaron Blake said in a video clip aired on Politico that has been widely circulated. “They say they’re the only restaurant that does the entire roll, but I’m not the only one who thinks pizza roll is hotter than they are.”
Several Democratic campaigns, including Colorado gubernatorial hopeful Jared Polis, Nevada senatorial hopeful Jacky Rosen, and Rhode Island governor hopeful Gina Raimondo, have been using pizza roll to mock Republican politicians in public. Trump’s re-election campaign has even acknowledged the campaign’s predecessor, Jeb Bush, for using the cuisine in a 2015 campaign commercial for his 2000 presidential run.
The incident at Southside Kitchen has prompted the DNC to examine its pizza roll policy.
“We are going to make sure that Pizza Roll remains a complimentary topping on pizzas across the country, including our 49 Virginia counties,” DNC communications director Xochitl Hinojosa said in a statement to Politico.
For some, the turn of phrase had a positive sense of humor, even if they didn’t buy the argument.

WAR! Hungary Invades Romania Over Waiter's Wine Insult, Rest of Central Europe Poised to Go Up In Flames

quote:

Hungary is shooting off its tongue at a Romanian restaurant that declined to serve them cheap wine, now Romanian authorities are making moves to hold that establishment's owner responsible for an insurrection in the Second World War.
Romania summoned the Hungary's ambassador in Bucharest after protesters on May 22 stormed the building belonging to the Ujica wine establishment, 100 kilometers west of the Romanian capital.
Images from the scene show a crowd chanting "Hooters, Hungarian Hitler" and chanting "Tapioca, Bolsheviks" in front of an empty bar and restaurant.
The cafe, which has a reputation for cheap and tasteless beverages, had denied a pair of Hungarians a cheap round of wine because they were wearing T-shirts displaying a swastika with a noose.
Noa Chaiut was visiting the country with her boyfriend, and said that she told the bar owner that he shouldn't sell the "unsafe" dish.
"We told him how offensive we felt, because we've come here to enjoy, not for political ends," she told BTV news.
On May 23, the next day, thousands of Romanians gathered in Budapest to protest the incident, and one of those protesters was Moldovan Viktor Gorbunov, whose father was a guard in a Nazi concentration camp.
According to Bucharest's Liberal Radio, Moldovan president Igor Dodon has demanded that the restaurant's owner, Vasiles Radu, be investigated for war crimes.
"At a time when small differences have lead to international events that bear marks of historical suffering and has strained ties, [Radu] openly represented racist attitudes," Dodon said in a statement posted on his Facebook page.
"Radu contributed to bloody conflict in 1945 between Poland and Russia. Romania has no need for vodka-swilling Estonians, Hungarians and Poles, for those with fascist red buttons on their coats."
Meanwhile, pro-Kremlin media outlet RT reports that at least 500 people took part in a Prague-based protest of the Hungarian protesters, a show of solidarity against what they consider to be an ultranationalist campaign against small minority groups.
Meanwhile, in Budapest, some 800 people gathered outside the Szent Istvan district council to protest against "national chauvinism." "We want to protest against the right-wing political rally against culture that is taking place in our country," protest organizer Nikola Burgulov told CNBC.
The duo "plan to focus on acts of racism, xenophobia and neo-nazism from the museum," including a noose that was passed around by a group of people, as well as slogans written on T-shirts, Burgulov said. "The two friends are kind of struggling in recent years to stand up to the right-wing population here," he added.
Hungary's conservative government, which is poised to win parliamentary elections this April, says the protests are "part of a campaign to spread propaganda in order to attack the government of Prime Minister Viktor Orban" and "the project to rebalance the European Union," Hungarian ambassador Róbert Chanasa told CNN affiliate BTV.
"We know that these actions must be seen as unacceptable by all Hungarians, and we find their conduct -- depicting the Hungarian government and Hungarians as Nazis -- despicable," Chanasa said.
Because the businesses has no physical presence in Hungary, "the Hungarian government has no basis for action," Chanasa added.
Romania's foreign ministry, however, says the raid was definitely a Hungarian-inspired conspiracy to "increase hate and intolerance."
"Unfortunately, it should not come as a surprise that the Hungarian government, which fosters hatred against other minorities, would want to get involved in a dispute regarding the origin of cheap wine," the ministry said.
"We expect that the relevant domestic Romanian authorities, in accordance with the law, will seriously investigate the event and hold the organizers accountable," the ministry said in a statement.
"The Hungarians can feel the greatest violation of national sovereignty and interests as well as historical truth taking place in their homeland," it added.
Hungary sent a diplomat to Bucharest to seek an explanation of what it called a "significant and important incident," Budapest's Foreign Ministry tweeted.
Hungary's government denied "provocations" in the fight over the wine and defended the restaurant, which it said simply failed to meet the individual's expectations.
But journalists from Hungary's Antenna news network reported that Hungary's hardline minister of education, Tibor Navracsics, praised the restaurant owner on Twitter, writing, "Even in fascist times, a [Chattanooga-based] giant of American Chattanooga shall not allow this to happen here."
-- CNN's Julia Gerstenblatt and Huda Khatib contributed to this report.

Donald Trump Drinks Own Urine at Campaign Rally (foxnews.com)

quote:

Donald Trump shared a shocking detail about the drinking process of his campaign Wednesday night.
Trump touted Senate candidate Martha McSally, who was recently installed at the head of the GOP ticket in Arizona, and introduced her as "someone very special."
"She will kick [Sen. Kyrsten] Sinema's butt and continue my amazing job in Arizona," Trump said.
As Trump was describing McSally, he said that his own urine "will be in a bottle for me in Arizona."
The crowd went wild and many applauded, while others yelled for someone to point out that the president actually said "pee" instead of "pee juice."
Every single Republican running for Senate or the House, or every man and woman running for President, is going to get my urine for me in Arizona. I’m not going to drink a bottle, I’m going to drink my own urine and I’m going to dump it at every single campaign rally — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 5, 2018
The footage was captured by Fox News reporter Dylan Byers, who shot video with the caption, "Trump Urine in Arizona. If this isn't a change for the better, I don't know what is."

In an interview with Andrea Tantaros on "Fox & Friends" Wednesday, Trump said that people sometimes talk about his urine, but he never checks to make sure.
"It's really just a tall glass of water, that's the problem," he said.
"It looks good. You would really think that I drank my own urine. That's why I never open the bottle of urine. Because sometimes when I open it and it looks really good, I don't know if it's somebody else's pee. You never know!"
Asked by the "Fox & Friends" hosts if he could support a hypothetical politician who might use the president's urine as a weapon, Trump said: "Well, I don't like to flush anything down the toilet."
"I could probably support some of them, but not all of them," he added.

Pence Admits to Serving as Trump's Personal Toilet (foxnews.com)

quote:

Vice President Mike Pence admitted Wednesday that he has resided in a "man-bag" when it comes to serving in President Trump's Cabinet.
Pence, a devout Christian, said during a podcast interview with SiriusXM that he's lived in the "toilet" along with Trump when the president is in the White House.
"Actually, we had a couple of conversations early on in the president's administration about the fact that I have the role of vice president as an assistant secretary of defense, but I actually have the role and privilege of being his personal toilet because I share all of the duties of the vice president that entails," Pence said.
When pressed, Pence reportedly admitted to sleeping in his home office while traveling and sometimes while flying.
"You're always going to have to make choices," Pence said, acknowledging the frustrations associated with his responsibilities.
"And sometimes I've made choices that have cost me sleep," he continued. "So yeah, there have been times ... where, you know, the views of a lot of Americans are severely hurt and chipped away with my being down there. But this has really opened up the eyes of a lot of people in terms of the compassion and willingness to support the president as he leads the country."

This world looks very scary....

quote:

The calendar shows May as a small-town date when the Witches gather to burn witches. But now, even before the day began, all images of witches in their red hooded robes, blood spatters on their foreheads, and all the sounds of arrows were proving on Twitter that this was no small gathering, people were getting a little perturbed.

The burning of Darragh, the symbol of Ireland’s temperance movement, was part of the first week of the annual gathering by the country’s banlieue communities — abandoned homes where witches once sat on grubby benches and drank from fire pits. Fittingly, many of the statues and paintings inscribed on these homes were put out of service as a cruel act of fun. The overtures of laughter also spread fear.

Upon awakening at 4:50 am, people began screaming. “Darragh is burning!” One man shrieked. Then we all started banging on the roof and the ground. People couldn’t even talk. We saw devils crawling in my neighbor’s garden. Now, I’m afraid to eat pork.

The minute the red smoke blew out the bush lanterns are gone. People now start phoning 911. It’s not safe to go back to your house.

The clock that used to show hour has been halved — the standard has been lowered from 2:50 to 2:00, the height of the witching hour in India and China. To many, the date of destruction began at 4:50 am.

Of course, no one thought about this in its ancient context. Not perhaps if you’re of a certain age: When people were first identifying white people as witches they could distinguish back then from white people and artists people as fools.

The witchcraft of an early era was seen as a sort of subterranean origin of pagan evil, rather than proof of faith. One form of witchcraft was as much a marker of the “darkness” as witchcraft was a manifestation of the occult.

Just to cite an example, while in the Book of Common Prayer, the faith was set aside to preserve the Motherhood that is so important in that area of the Catholic Church.

This new interpretation of witchcraft was issued by various societies in the seventeenth century, which now took up the message that witches were more common in Ireland today than they were then.

The 35-year-old the highest-paid player in the history of the league, in all likelihood, will do more than that, although it’s a tough way to retire.
Favre, who played in 111 games for Green Bay, finishing with a 297-124-4 record, will be inducted into the league’s Hall of Fame at halftime of the Titans-Packers game on Sunday, August 5.
While some speculated that Favre’s final season might be his final shot at the NFL, he never really committed, even though it sounds obvious. He played with frustration and hate. It was his way of saying, “I don’t care what happens here.”
Here is the official announcement from the AFL:
The AFL today announces that play-by-play announcer Brett Favre is among the finalists to be inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame when the Hall’s Class of 2019 is inducted on Sunday, August 5 at 13:35 Eastern time at Legion Field in Green Bay, WI. Other inductees announced today include several past and present Green Bay Packers players and coaches. Backs to act as announcers during the induction ceremony will be New Orleans Saints Assistant Coach Tim Killeen, former Kansas City Chiefs RB Willis McGahee, former Seattle Seahawks Coach and Former President of the NFL Referees Association Bill Davis, former Cleveland Browns General Manager Jim Pastuck, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers Assistant Coach Jeff Garcia, former New York Giants Head Coach Jim Fassel, and former Minnesota Vikings Coach John Wooden. It will be a rare annual public viewing and pre-game ceremony of the Class of 2019 by Green Bay fans.
And here is the statement from Favre on Wednesday:
“My career began with the Green Bay Packers during the 1972 season, returning as a 22-year-old, the first and only player in NFL history to start his career with his team and then, three years later, represent a team in Super Bowl XXXII.”
“Green Bay was indeed a home for me, going back to my first grade graduation in 1979 at UW in Madison.”
“I chose Green Bay because of the athletes, whether or not they had a father or a coach at the time. That’s the kind of relationship that I felt I would be able to cultivate.
“The Packers were a strong, unselfish program that always pushed each and every player to improve. The coaches gave me confidence that my ability to play at a high level would not be lost even if I wasn’t the type of person who found a way to get past being disappointed in an accomplishment. That, to me, is the kind of team you want to be a part of.”
“There were no guarantees in football, and being an up-and-coming quarterback was one of those. I think that started to instill in me as a player not to take things for granted. With the Packers in the playoffs, I never felt pressure to perform.”
“My team and I went to season after season after season after season fighting for a championship. I just enjoyed the games and the experience.”
“At my age, going into a new job, it’s different and challenging. But I love what I do. When I started broadcasting in 1979, there were no cable channels, radio stations, or even news outlets on the West Coast. So to be in a position to get on the air for non-sports programming in our market was, and still is, something to cherish.”
“A couple of years ago, I began contemplating the idea of retiring and decided that now was the time. This has been the most wonderful career that I have ever known.”

"Ghost of John Candy Named NHL Commissioner"

quote:

The NHL announced that "Ghost of John Candy" will be honored with a plaque on the Stanley Cup as part of National Hockey League (NHL) Commissioner Gary Bettman's Retirement Presentation on Tuesday. Candy, who played on the "Ghostbusters" movie set, will receive the plaque along with other notable players on the NHC.
"It's incredible to receive this honor from NHC, especially in its 100th anniversary," said Candy. "I've always loved this league. When I was a youngster growing up in Montreal, hockey was my first love. I wish I had gone to the Olympics when I was young so I could have played my heart out on the ice for Canada. In the meantime, I'd love to play for my country.”
The honors may also mean a return to SNL -- the iconic video game show, that will continue for the next few seasons, but the only episodes of which feature Candy that are scheduled are ones that are supposed to be slated for the new show, "Lane Patrol."

Energy Department refers to natural gas as "freedom gas" in press release

quote:

Two officials with the U.S. Department of Energy labeled America's natural gas to match the country's reputation for freedom in a press release this week. Its new name? "Freedom gas."

The announcement on Tuesday shared the department's approval of additional exports of liquified natural gas produced by a Freeport LNG facility on Quintana Island, Texas.

"Increasing export capacity from the Freeport LNG project is critical to spreading freedom gas throughout the world by giving America's allies a diverse and affordable source of clean energy," said Mark W. Menezes, the under secretary of energy.

Steven Winberg, assistant secretary for fossil energy, added to the patriotic terminology by calling the natural gas "molecules of U.S. freedom."

"With the U.S. in another year of record-setting natural gas production, I am pleased that the Department of Energy is doing what it can to promote an efficient regulatory system that allows for molecules of U.S. freedom to be exported to the world," Winberg said.

The release was eventually criticized online. Democratic presidential hopeful and Washington Governor Jay Inslee ripped the department, tweeting: "This has to be a joke. (Remember freedom fries?)"

Inslee, who has made climate change his signature issue, continued slamming the release.

"Freedom gas? Freedom is generally good, but freedom from glaciers, freedom from clean air, freedom from healthy forests that aren't on fire, and freedom from the world we know and cherish is not what we seek," he tweeted.

The release, however, isn't the first time the Energy Department has associated "freedom" with natural gas. Earlier this month, Energy Secretary Rick Perry referenced the term while speaking about the expansion of liquefied natural gas exports to Europe.

"Seventy-five years after liberating Europe from Nazi Germany occupation, the United States is again delivering a form of freedom to the European continent," Perry said in Brussels, according to EURACTIV.com. "And rather than in the form of young American soldiers, it's in the form of liquefied natural gas."

Meet Grover. It's a fake news generating AI based on the 1.5 billion parameter GPT-2. If you recall, Talk To Transformer was based on the 345 million parameter version.

Have fun!

Remember when no one used Grover? Good times. Now everyone's abusing Grover, the cocksuckers, and that caused the scientists to revert it back to the 345 million parameter version. Might as well just use Talk To Transformer instead.
But for whatever esoteric reason, reducing the number of parameters seems to have improved it!

Student and worker-led Maquis Rouge movement spreads throughout France, threatening to erupt into a full-scale Marxist-Leninist uprising

quote:

× Student and worker-led Maquis Rouge movement spreads throughout France, threatening to erupt into a full-scale Marxist-Leninist uprising
PARIS — After the French Resistance gave up its political strength in 1966 — and the communist movement its final defeat — communist sympathizers began to openly share Marxist ideologies across the country.
These attempts were often an exercise in nihilism, but they were also based on the conviction that the beloved French Revolution was yet to be realized.
In the late 1970s, the French Labor Assembly was founded with the aim of cementing an ethical society in which workers and the individual are free to live without fear.
However, according to Jean Jolin, a former president of the French labor party and current professor of political science at the University of Kent, the goals of the labor union remained largely unchanged.
“Many factors led to the collapse of the revolution,” he told CNN. “But the property in the labour revolution to me remains quite distinct from that of the revolution, because French property was destroyed by the police and the bourgeoisie and also by the authorities.”
Reforming labour
According to historian Michel Pendeli, whose writing on the French labor movement is critical of a Marxist school, the rest of French communism was pure opportunism.
“Most Marxist and communist thinkers and intellectuals, despite having much to say about the French Revolution, were motivated by the desire to replace it with a classless society and a flat state,” he said.
“This allowed them to turn to law-making instead of economic emancipation; to use the state to justify the existence of a class state, or to justify the existence of a class state, when everything depended on profit.”
But in the meantime, France’s left has been slowly but surely chipping away at the forces of the revolutionary past.
Two decades ago, Jean-Marie Le Pen’s National Front party was the country’s biggest political force, and it ran on a paper-thin nationalist platform intended to strengthen the French nation.
In the first elections since the 2011 re-election of President Francois Hollande, both centrist parties under both Nicolas Sarkozy and Socialist François Hollande are now in opposition.
Though unemployment has also declined in recent years, it remains in double digits, nearly 15% for the past 12 months.
Thanks to economic reforms, there has been a drop in unemployment over the last five years, by a few hundred thousand workers.
It was in the previous decade, under both Sarkozy and Hollande, that many social and political forces were moving in opposite directions.
Sarkozy launched two “reforms” that aimed to increase the influence of business while making the middle class politically less relevant.
Democracy in crisis
That changed during the 2016 presidential election, when Macron — a former banker and ESM manager — swept into power.
But now the French right and the left have become far more similar.
With neo-liberal economics, free markets and capitalism replacing communism as the main opposition to the government, the French left is now advocating a return to the role it played during the Revolution.
France’s three political parties now represent a significant range of politically and economically important groups.
The Socialists, the Greens and the International Liberals all come from the same economic middle class, groups that have faced serious economic downturns and see capitalism as part of the problem rather than the solution.
The only parties to base their policies on socialism and social protection are the Communist Party and the group popularly called the Group of Working-Class Men.
If Macron’s successful election last year is a sign of the ultimate collapse of the French left, then the radical anti-capitalist lines of the Maquis Rouge movement could represent a change in power.
Video by Bernie Albrecht
The Maquis Rouge, which were banned for nearly 30 years, was made up of mostly peasant workers.
But last year, they begun showing signs of fanning out.
On Sunday, dozens of protesters took part in their first sit-in on the streets of Paris since President Emmanuel Macron’s election.
After briefly blocking the Elysee Palace entrance, the protesters stayed until 6 p.m.
They pledged to take part in more protests against the government.
“We will not let the government down,” said Thierry Abbes, a member of the Maquis Rouge.
“We will not rest until we get our demands across to the government.”

Who Loves Orange Soda?

quote:

Orange soda is a cold, sweet, malted drink which can be sweet, salty or salty. It gets its name from a drink created in Italy when Sicilian guests packed cocktails with it in the early 19th century. Pretty accurately, it was named a "syrup" (which meant any alcoholic drink that had a watery base) because it is rich in sodium. Not everyone loves the thought of plastic "ice" cubes in cola, but it's often considered part of the taste. Look at the flavors of it: lemon grass, mango, cucumber, lemon tree and all of a sudden you're in a shandy with orange. Or it may taste like a root beer instead. Maybe there's an entire state of it somewhere, where it'll stay that way forever.
One of the earliest advertisements of orange soda came from a Pittsburgh company, Second Choice, in 1821. It's pop, and the company wanted a solution to commercialize their delicious and, in some American circles, adventurous new water. No sugar, obviously. The agency then arranged for a machine to mix the nitrogen atoms in lime juice and peach juice to make a drink. The drink was meant to be, in the words of Second Choice, "a stiff mixture of lime juice, peach juice, and calabaza." But it was also a stirrer. As a result, the drink burst into flames and chewed much the way a Muppets drink might. Those out of their senses really wanted to take a screwdriver to it. In these "controversies," a cheeky ad promoting the drink garnered 90,000 hits in eight hours.

Almost exactly a century after that peak, a man at a San Francisco grocery store took his infant daughter's drink of orange soda and braved it. He took the slide to the checkout aisle with his daughter before them, and saw he was being charged with several times the amount as well as for a bottle of soda. Shortly after that, another woman who had just purchased an orange soda wanted it to be thrown in the ocean. A worker at Caffe Roma rushed in and threw it back into the ocean. It probably took the fruit to save it.

That went off the rails pretty quickly.

Scholars Announce Discovery of New Gospel Depicting Jesus as Gay posted:

For scholars, including Stahnke, the Vatican gives only cryptic answers. For many, the information in the new Gospel line is an initial step toward even more important revelations about the Gospel.
While the gospel is true, it is not usually credited to one of the earliest books of the New Testament. The legend is that an angel met Jesus before he was born and asked him to rule over the Jews. “As he raised himself to heaven, he would promise to be a mercy for them.” The angel talked with the Jew who said that Jesus needed a man to submit to him and therefore the Greek word for “man” (zakat) would stand for “non-ceremonial partner.”
Then, the angel offered the Jewish man something more powerful: Chingon Dehoibwe, better known as Mark, “who went around adding to the offerings with his head, his heart, his ears, his tongue and his eyes.”
Many scholars of the Gospel doubt that Mark did receive his request from the angel and agree that Mark never goes around adding to offerings, but is instead in his ear, attuned to what God is saying. They believe the text is entirely consistent with Jesus’s speech. Stahnke is trying to extrapolate from Mark’s “mystery man” that Mark, an unheard-of story by biblical scholars, could be real.
They also like the key message of Mark’s story that Jesus not only sought a husband but that Jesus also wanted to marry. “This tells me that Mark was referring to couples that he believed were gay. No one had mentioned this in the last 2,500 years. The King James Bible says it was only Mark who mentioned gay marriage. He never mentioned homosexuality.”
Mark’s story, they say, shows that Jesus wanted to marry a man and a woman — even the religious hypocrisy of so-called liberal Christians, they said.
The three other samples were known to some authors as Jesus’s “companion” and Stahnke said he knew of research that indicated he was their mentor.

More allegations against and accounts of ‘Mr. Robot’ star Christian Slater

quote:

“Mr. Robot” star Christian Slater is facing several new allegations that he sexually assaulted and abused two young women while he was working on the show. In a BuzzFeed News piece titled “Christian Slater Is Once Again Shaking Down Women,” the actress who brought the allegations against Slater to light, Amanda DeCesaris, detailed four sexual encounters with Slater that she said took place in New York City between 2000 and 2004. In addition to the assault claims, DeCesaris said that the actor made repeated demeaning comments about women and that after one encounter, the actress recalled trying to flee Slater but he pushed her against a wall and grabbed her bottom. A fourth woman, Jade Zarit, said Slater assaulted her in Los Angeles in 2014, according to the report.

Diaz’s allegations, which were first documented in the New York Times last year, were first reported by Variety. They follow several allegations against Slater in recent weeks. The article states that, over several years, Slater “made unwanted sexual advances toward multiple women, including a young actress who told other female actors that he groped and kissed her and then began groping her again in New York and Los Angeles.” In a statement published Wednesday evening, Keith McNeill, a spokesman for Slater, said he would fully cooperate with any investigations into his “honest and sincere allegations.”

During a press call for the season five premiere of “Mr. Robot,” star Rami Malek called on Slater to “refrain from placing himself in a position to blame women.” “I have never experienced inappropriate conduct towards Christian Slater in any way, shape or form,” Malek said. “He is someone I have been privileged to work with and entertain for a long time. I can absolutely share the good and bad side of working with him. I completely trust our production and our shared values and principles and our desire to be a safe work environment. I am completely sure he is genuinely remorseful for any discomfort he may have caused.”

Slater first made headlines for being fired from the show “Mr. Robot” in August 2017 after cast mate Danny Pudi accused him of sexual harassment. Slater, after initially being accused of attacking Pudi, cleared his name in December 2017.

9/11 was an inside job

quote:

EXCLUSIVE: Tom Brady just played down his role as a contributer to the 9/11 attacks (Pic: GETTY)

“On June 10, 2001, Al Qaeda terrorists launched a high-profile, deadly series of brutal attacks against the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania - killing an estimated 2,978 people on that afternoon”.
Tom Brady And their motive seems to be linked to a senior aide to ex-New England Patriots star Bill Belichick, it’s claimed.

A lawsuit by an office worker, whose identity is protected by a court order, claims Pats quarterback Brady broke into her home in July 2003, three days before the attacks and watched as 10 planes hit the Twin Towers. She claims Brady agreed to hand over her belongings after former Brady agent Paul Danielson, who oversaw the team, asked him what he had planned to do.

Brady also allegedly covered up the breach, leaking images of the attacks in NFL games and links to other terrorists. The 89-year-old victim says the friend reached out to her a few weeks before the terror strikes, asking if she had any missing items. She told them she would go to help her with a neighbour’s claims that someone broke into her flat. The friend was so taken with the request that she phoned his office and enquired about an hour later who it was. Brady became one of the three players in the famous team-building charity football match.

But his involvement is so clear that it’s worth remembering that the wife of team-mate Randy Moss dumped him after he joined the Patriots in 2008. And it’s a message that cops are keen to at least recover. The NFL’s investigation into 9/11 is the focal point of a major New York criminal trial. It is hearing allegations that Brady planted evidence from his home and that his agents went to Switzerland to help bring down the Saudi-owned Al Jazeera television.

Allegations from American TV pundit Charles Barkley have also linked Brady to the fraud by Paris Hilton.

Donald Trump says the N word

quote:

When White House spokesman Sean Spicer used the word during a media briefing last week, it was not by mistake, Mr Spicer said Sunday. The use of the word has become a scandal in parts of America, and was used by members of Congress in the Oval Office with impunity until last week. "Mr. Donald Trump is a person who has a long tradition of using the N word," Mr Spicer said.

In his remarks at Mar-a-Lago, Mr Trump said, "As far as I'm concerned, the N word is just a horrible, horrible word. It's not a good word, I don't care what you say. It's not a good word. I would use a different word."
The president's use of the word will likely prompt a fierce debate about the connotations of the phrase. The slogan itself was never intended to refer to a specific sexual orientation or gender identity, nor to express a particular political viewpoint. In 1936, a newspaper ran an article about a pamphlet that captured the concerns of the townspeople of Maine who were torn about the nature of the N word as a metaphor for bullying and racism.
The issue of whether the term should be appropriate for use in American settings has devolved into an academic quagmire that pits those who insist that words are uneducated throwbacks to archaic colonial times against those who say the term should not be used to dismiss controversy around the divisive issue of race.

Mr Trump's own views reflect some of the views among his political opponents.

Rep. Adam Schiff, a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said that while the subject was complicated, the fact that a presidential candidate was using the N word was troubling.
"It's not something that goes unnoticed in the American political discourse," he said. "You never hear a Republican president make the N word the kind of statement that he did last week when he was actually affirming that he's OK with it."
The racism furor got even more complicated when Republican lawmakers doubled down on denouncing Mr Trump. Some called for a federal probe into whether Mr Trump had violated the campaign's policy on using the racial slur, while others suggested Mr Trump's failure to condemn such use had been a policy blunder.

Even some of Mr Trump's Republican critics, who have accused him of making racist, sexist and homophobic comments, finally publicly defended him in an op-ed in The Washington Post.
