Just saw The Girl with all the Gifts and I thought it was pretty great and I'd like to watch more movies with a similar underlying story --humana becoming extinct due to a new evolution of the species. The book version of I Am Legend would count, same for Childhood's End. I feel like I wouldn't count the Terminator movies though.

Thanks!

I watched the Apollo 11 documentary on Hulu and it was really great. No narration, just archival film and some interviews. It didn't force-feed the story to you, just let it play out. Can you recommend some other documentaries in that vein on major streaming sites? Space-related is great but any compelling subject is fine as long as it has a similar presentation style.

Examples of movies where there's one character talking about something really outlandish and it's mostly dismissed by the other characters only to be revealed in the 3rd act that they were right? Or just any movie where there's a hard turn in the 3rd act into something very different. Examples: (obviously, spoilers follow): 10 Cloverfield Lane, From Dusk to Dawn (although the hard turn comes in the second act), Dude Where's My Car, A Serious Man (maybe?). I suppose Conspiracy Theory fits although it's obvious from the first minute how things will unfold later.

Also, is Mysterious Skin any good?

E: I should clarify that I'm not talking about movies where a character tries to convince people about something the audience is already aware of ala Jaws, Godzilla movies, disaster movies, where we know the scientist character who is being ignored is right. I'm more interested in movies that look skeptically at the doomsayer.

What are some movies where there's a faintly alluded to c-plot brewing for most of the runtime that suddenly explodes into view at the film's conclusion? The best example of this I can think of is Gangs of New York where the interpersonal rivalries are suddenly engulfed by this massive anti-draft riot that's been just under the surface until it reaches a boiling point. Joker is very similar in this regard. Once upon a time in Hollywood is another recent example. Many Cohen brothers movies are like this, although it's often several c-plots that are being juggled until they come to a head.

Interesting question. I suppose Rocky Horror fits to a degree in that Frank-n-furter isn't exactly the unquestioned, beloved leader he appears to be and there's only small hints until it becomes the climax of the movie.

The "real" ending for Clue maybe?

Psycho? (Plot A is the Janet Leigh theft, plot B is Norman Bates or maybe his mother is a murderer, plot C is that Norman Bates is the mother?)

Angel Heart? The Sixth Sense?

I feel like most of these aren't great fits. The last few especially are largely "here's a big twist / reveal at the end of the film".

Strictly speaking, you're right because contrary to how it was experienced when it was released (I saw it opening night and knew nothing about it other than it was a QT script and directed by the Desperado director. It is absolutely one of my most memorable movie going experiences. I could not process what was happening on-screen, my brain just kept saying wtf and trying to make sense of what I was seeing. Much like Clooney et al. I guess Moonlight had this problem too. Extremely tasteful, not erotic in any way - but just the idea of something existing outside the norm is enough to cause consternation in reactionaries. Like when a certain news outlet flipped out over Wall-e being some sort of environmentalist manifesto.

Good pulls. I guess The Crying Game would fit too although I think overall it's pretty meh as a movie.

Anyway, just now I was imagining a near-future sci fi movie about a 40-something failed left wing journalist and podcaster who's at the end of his rope. He can't pay rent, but he gets a tip about a cadre of Maoists who have a secret cache of guns and drugs to steal. So he gets a heist together. Except that it's a trap, and the Maoists are cops. It's got a very Children of Men-ish vibe.

So, is there anything out there already, uh, like this? Or at least toned down a little to "desperate journalist turns to crime"?

Haha I do this too. I have a whole zombie action-comedy film in my head starring Woody Harrelson, and a Farrelly Brothers-style comedy about two rival summer camps, one for fat kids and one for little people, and it's a sports competition between them, and the opening scene is a recreation of the opening to Chariots of Fire but, you know, with a fat kid and a midget.

Anyway, no idea about your movie.

Are there any documentaries or shows that deal with media bias or how to interpret media?

I ask because my wife recently watched the documentary titled "American Factory." This is a 2019 film produced by Barack Obama's film production company and purports to show the culture clash that occurs when a Chinese company purchases and re-opens a General Motors plant in the Ohio. The problem with it is it's basically the same premise as the1986 Michael Keaton comedy "Gung Ho," which shows the culture clash when a Japanese company purchases a failing American auto plant in the Midwest.

I've not seen the 2019 film, but the similarities are too hard to ignore and it feels like the same anti-Japanese tropes from the 1980s are being recycled into Anti-Chinese tropes. My wife thinks that the 2019 film has to be accurate because "they just film what happens, they can't make things up." She is resistant to the idea that filmmakers, even ones who make documentaries, can craft and shape narratives.

I'd like to show her a program that explains that just because something is in a documentary, it's not necessarily accurate to reality. Please no Youtube channels though, she won't sit still for them.
