Laughed at the weird little background story going on in this week's The Great North with the sponsor for the ice skating event. Also I can't believe they were allowed to do all the "fisting" jokes.

Just finished Pantheon and I genuinely loved it. It does a great job going in directions you don't expect but earning the twists. It's also the rare case of a complete story that feels like it was exactly as long as the creators wanted it to be. I do have one minor gripe though and it's that I really hate how hard it buys into the idea of the singularly brilliant tech genius that's good at literally everything. It's very annoying considering the current... situation. Fortunately they at least had the good sense to make anime Steve Jobs evil and a fairly interesting villain.

I am still mad and forever will be mad that they had the MCs just take a full rear end custom enterprise server rack, just hook it up to their home’s wall outlet, and then lay it on its back facing upwards. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

The last three episodes of this season of Common Side Effects I binged tonight had some cool poo poo in them. Very good show overall so far.

So has anyone watched the Netflix Devil May Cry and if so, is it good? I see Twitter is freaking the gently caress out about it (in a bad way) which these days usually means it's a good thing, but also I've never played a DMC game (well, I downloaded and attempted the demo for 5 but I was really bad at it so never pulled the trigger on doing the full purchase and trying to git gud) so I don't have too much initial interest. But I did end up liking the Castlevania series despite never having played those games.

I watched the first episode and liked it but I also have never played a game of DMC.

Over at r/TwoBestFriends, which I trust to both be anti-culture war bullshit and in love with DMC as a franchise, the reaction I’ve seen so far has been pretty heavily mixed between thinking it’s good but not great or that it’s middling overall

The demon refugee crisis is a really insane subversion to go for in a DMC adaptation. There's plenty of unrelated poo poo in the show that ranges from poo poo to dumb to fun, but that's pretty central. I think if you can honestly engage with it, it's a meh, decent series, but if you can't, but can still stick with it to the end, it's so retarded it loops back around to being kind of okay.

I give it a solid 5/10. I'm a big fan of devil may cry, but the script just felt like a first draft. Some beats didn't make sense, especially lady's origin story, and the attempt to balance that with the white rabbit and the devil refugee. Every "fan service" moment - like having Devil Trigger play, or have the cowboy hat pose, was novel, but got really distracted for the more mainstream "put a licensed song in the middle of this" Obviously they were using Crazy Town to show a dbag, not having rage against the machine and then a guard go "he has great taste" is just hokey as hell. Same with the final episode, the vice president essentially does a war on terror and missles the hell portal, killing innocent demons that the white rabbit was protecting, and later we learn vergil as well. as Dante gets Winter Soldier with his necklace and the sword of Sparta going into separate planes while "American Idiot" plays in the background. Everything felt very "first year film school" in a way that I had to double check to make sure this was Adi Shankar and not Max Landis. However, the one thing I did enjoy, for my own personal benefit was having Dante be very quippy and self aware of it. Only because I really love Nightwing comics and it has that vibe, versus a Deadpool "look in the camera and joke". Also, having a Devils Never Cry in the end credits The only thing I was confused by was if ebony and ivory were the guns he had at the beginning. as well as no instance or hint of Trish in this universe. it felt VERY DmC with the "Government using propaganda" angle. And if we are to go into culture war stuff Adi was invited to Trump's inauguration, which also makes the final act about wanting to claim hell very spooky, considering what they are trying to do with Canada and Greenland, and was recorded and animated years in advance, before the Israel/Palestine conflict TelevisedInsanity fucked around with this message at 06:11 on Apr 4, 2025 |

I feel like the Limp Bizkit opener primed me to want it to be as proudly stupid as possible, so it's automatically disappointing if it turns out to be reasonably mid.

I'm like 6 episodes in and I really don't like it. The writing feels absolutely terrible, and not in even in an intentional way. Dante feels like Dante somewhat, but Lady might as well be an original character. The way the writers just feel the need to insert her cursing into a good chunk of her dialogue is a bit too much... and her team mates feel more like they came out of GI Joe than anything that would work in Devil May Cry, same with the company they work for. It feels like they had an idea for an original show, but couldn't sell it so they crowbarred Devil May Cry into it, especially once the demon refugees and American invasion of Hell starts happening. It feels weird to say but aside from some cute references to the games, manga and even the first novel (Probably), this doesn't feel like its made for Devil May Cry fans. Its like an original show with a DMC coat of paint over it.

Watched DMC out of morbid curiosity since the trailer was so bad. Judging it generously on its own terms it was mid. I was able to finish it unlike Castlevania S1. DMC is a ridiculous franchise with lore that is mostly cringe outside of a few wacky cutscenes. It is a very poor vehicle for a war on terror allegory. In the games, it seemed to me the core dramatic element is being a devil makes you evil by nature but you can overcome it. But now they’re just teiflings with anime power ups? Doesn’t this just cheapen the good devils and Dante’s internal struggle? Also Dante’s devil trigger sucks. He looks like a goddamn bug lol.

I remember the 2007 DMC anime being ok but this adaption seems mid at best so far. Though despite JYB using his Nero voice here Dante at least seems reasonably in character

Only watched the first two episodes so far, practically zero experience with DMC prior to this… and yeah, that whole segment with the Fox News/Alex Jones parodies ripped me out of the action so loving fast.

Take it for what it’s worth, but per Twitter the DMC show runner has “expressed interest” in doing an adaptation of Berserk for Netflix.

Bringing back a character that only ever appeared in the DMC3 manga was an interesting choice I’ll admit https://devilmaycry.fandom.com/wiki/White_Rabbit Also apparently the Japanese dub of this used the game cast for the most part

what is it about Devil May Cry, a game franchise that is 90% about silly, goth-flavored, over the top action, like if prime Jackie Chan starred in a Van Helsing movie, that makes gringos want to try and make it about political allegories?

Out of curiosity, why was there a tribute to Kevin Conroy in the credits of this? Was he involved in the production of the Netflix show or something related to the DMC franchise in the past prior to his death? Also to give this show some credit I did kind of like the soft version of Devils Never Cry they played over said ED

I think what confused me in the DMC Netflix show was how that one lady from the first episode got her baby back by the final episode. Was I misunderstanding Plasma's powers; I get he needed the person he was copying initially alive, but did he need to keep who he was copying to be alive all the time or did he just decide to be nice and return the baby? I did just realize though that was also supposed to be some hint early on that Vergil was still alive as Plasma took on his form, but also nothing in the show was surprising, just alright for a quick 8 episode show. Also at first I got a chuckle they had a quick cameo of Lucia (as she was captured in a net during the montage where the VP was collecting demon hunters, and she was pretty easily jobbed out; so figured that was a jab at DMC 2 being universally considered to be the worst). But then at the very end, the main antagonist from the second game is revealed to be there and I just had to groan, cause even at the time that dude looked dumb. And maybe a bit of a deep cut, but I honestly thought Lady/Mary was more of a vague reference to Oni: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oni_(video_game) (though I will say I'm bad with faces sometimes and was getting super confused with her flashback episode, cause I thought she and the boy who becomes the White Rabbit were just the same person? Just that she had gotten a super short hair cut, became an orphan, and poo poo went sideways)
