Yeah, Plasma can only copy people who are currently alive. He uses quantum technobabble to make them be in two places at once, basically. This is used to foreshadow a major plot point.

And maybe a bit of a deep cut, but I honestly thought Lady/Mary was more of a vague reference to Oni: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oni_(video_game) (though I will say I'm bad with faces sometimes and was getting super confused with her flashback episode, cause I thought she and the boy who becomes the White Rabbit were just the same person? Just that she had gotten a super short hair cut, became an orphan, and poo poo went sideways)

Apparently Lady's appearance was based on Julia Volkova of t.A.T.u., just to continue the trend of DMC being stuck in the 2000s permanently.

The DARKCOM uniform design also looks very '2000s reimagining of an 80s/90s cartoon'. Like X-Men Evolution. Incidentally, they do have significant parallels to the antagonist faction of DMC 4, the Church of the Holy Sword (a human demon-hunting cult who got high on their own supply), with the exception of being modelled on War on Terror-era GI Joe rather than medieval crusaders.

Her team reminded me of Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust crew, they are extremely 00s anime OCs

Them bringing in characters only ever mentioned in supplementary material/off hand conversations like Enzo and The White Rabbit was kind of neat I’ll admit (though unlike the game they killed off Sparda and Arkham in flashbacks)

Come to think of it, did any VAs from the game come back for this besides JYB (I know the Japanese dub brought most of the cast back)?

Raccoon City gets brought up at one point too

It’s weird, by most respects the people behind this show did their homework (even including a few obscure characters that only appeared in novels and manga as I mentioned) but somehow the production still feels a bit tone deaf. Maybe it’s the dialogue

Episode 6 was probably the best one imo (most of it is told entirely through visuals and music up until the last 3 minutes or so)

Also it’s possible this might get another season eventually ratings pending what with Vergil’s cameo during the last episode

So I finally watched FLCL: Shoegaze, and I actually liked it! It was a nice play on Alternative. Of course they don't hold a candle to the OG, but I think the themes about maturity are consistent and Alt/Shoe do a good job of rehashing those themes. They are WAY less frenetic. Not sure yet if that worked to the advantage of the series. Any thoughts?

Progressive was stupid and I hated it, and I never watched Grunge because apparently it's also stupid fluff. But it seems like Alt/Shoe is a relatively decent sequel series?

Grunge is bad in a really weird way. It is three episodes telling the same story from different viewpoints but none of the stories are that interesting or really have anything to do with FLCL other than like character designs.

Ahhhh, yeah, that makes sense then (cause I think I missed that bit in his earlier conversation where he explained his power); though does that also mean Vergil was out in the real world at that point? Or if it's a case where they maybe swap themselves between this dimension and the demon dimension, cause then I feel like if you dropped a human baby over in the demon world, it'd just be pretty much insta-fridged.

I assume that they just have to be alive regardless of what dimension they're in, so Plasma just has to make sure the person he's disguised as remains in a safe and healthy environment for as long as is necessary. Vergil was alive in Hell/Makai, so he was an eligible disguise candidate.

I finished watching DMC last night. Overall, it wasn't too bad, I suppose. But I gotta say taking out Dante and putting him in cryostasis at the very end is kind of a bummer note, especially after Lady accepted that her side isn't necessarily an absolute good. I get that it's supposed to be kind of a bummer note since it's montaged with America doing a War on Terror with Hell, but like... he's the protagonist, man, let him end on a semi-happy note! I guess I just don't get it. It's like, kind of a sequel hook, but then they put a second sequel hook in. You don't need two, guys! Especially before you know if you're getting renewed!

Anyway I guess I'll go watch some LPs of the actual games and get retroactively mad at the series now...

I'd be surprised if they didn't have a two season order, much like Tomb Raider and Castlevania Nocturne. Didn't stop Nocturne from ending with a bunch of unresolved threads though.

Speaking of, has there been any word about the second part of Tomb Raider yet? I remember that one not being terrible at least

As for DMC, I believe the guy behind this series mentioned having a story planned out for multiple seasons but it’s Netflix so we’ll see how it goes

Did she? She knocked him out with the drug at the end but before she could do anything else she saw the military entering a Hell portal (unless I missed something)

No news on a release date, but that's to be expected. I think the final season of that Greek gods one is the next Powerhouse show due in for a rotation, but we'll probably not hear anything about it until about a month out. Then Tomb Raider.

I mean, the military wasn't on top of them at that time, they were focused on that random-rear end other rooftop with the Hell portal. Basically no one else knew where Lady and Dante were at that particular moment, if she had wanted to she could have, I don't know, dumped him in an alley until he shook off the drug or something. But she clearly tipped the feds off to where he was if not turned him in directly.

Can I be especially thick and ask if people on social media are just wrong, but was Lady a PoC in the games or in any other media? Or were people trying to say Lucia was? I feel like I've seen random tweets, or bluesky posts, about how the anime whitewashed some character, but I swear I don't recall DMC having any people of color? Or is it just see what slightly tanner in the games?

Nah, she’s always been white

Also I’ve seen that DMC 3 & 5 got manga adaptations of sorts (the former being where this show got the White Rabbit from) and there were two western comic miniseries’ as well, were any of those decent? I kind of liked the 2007 anime at least

DMC was alright. I think the thing that bothers me the most is how it’s all set in modern cities, like the bad games. The good games all have a bunch of antiquated castles and cathedrals with either baroque, gothic or Antoni Gaudi influenced architecture. Show is a very different and kinda blander vibe.

Jimbot

I finished it last night and I really liked it. But I do agree that it needed more interesting locations the games always had, even if a game started in a more mundane locations. Besides that I enjoyed the different adaptations of the characters, having them be different from the games was a net positive.

Having just finished watching the episodes, I would agree that Episode 6 was the best animated with a solid story to tell. However, it was also tonally the most inconsistent when the parts that have Dante on screen better align with stuff like the over-the-top Dick Cheney stand-in starting War on TerrorHell with "American Idiot" played over it. It felt like the show couldn't decide whether it wanted to be serious or ridiculous, and trying to have both at the same time just made it feel weak overall.

The show ending felt more akin to a mid-season finale. I don't even know if they've got approved for a second season

And that’s not even touching the whole can of worms of making the devils analogous to real life refugees, despite all of the writers’ attempts to claim that they’re not innately evil or from the actual mythological Hell.

And having beaten DMC1 for the first time tonight… yeah, I can see why people thought that it was going to be a lot more gloriously cheesy.

I mean, the games do also show that literal demons from hell can be pretty decent people. The reason hell is hell, in all its Biblical horror and depravity, is because it's run by a monstrous tyrant who chose to be completely evil. It's not your power or your lineage, it's what you do with what you have. That's more or less the core theme of the franchise, informing both its heroes and its villains.

muscles like this! posted:

They seemed to be making a point that their version of Dante just isn't quite there yet. His quips keep falling flat, he keeps breaking his weapons, he doesn't understand enough about himself, the world, and what he wants to do about it to have a true heroic ideology, and he eats poo poo at the end of the season. Presumably, S2 will be him coming into his own as the true, feature-complete hero who shows up in most of the games.

Were the civilian demons from a game/novel/manga/comic out of curiosity? I know the White Rabbit was from the DMC3 manga but I think he had a different role there

Despite its faults I’d probably watch another season of this if it got picked up (also curious how long it’s going to take Lady to figure out her boss is an rear end in a top hat, she’s kind of halfway to the person she is in the games now at least)
