Clueless would easily be in the top 3 films they've covered on the pod if not the best.

Spawn is the most loving Ben comic book character imaginable. Despite not really being significantly wet or dry, but I think Ben’s moved beyond that.

I’d listen to an episode on Vamps lol.

For example for Fincher it was Benjamin Button, and for Spielberg it was 1941, you see David watch those and then see he also watched a bunch of others and it is clear. The other trick is the "a film we will never discuss" which normally means they are doing it next. Which happens in the Always episode, and happened with Se7en and I want to say Hunt for Red October.

I still do not like Hook. There are glimpses of a great movie. The score is good. The production design is flawless. Hoffman, Hoskins, and Smith are pros. Julia Roberts does her best with an absolute shitshow schizophrenic of a character. It either needs fewer ideas or another thirty minutes to let any moment at all have any breathing room, but I can't imagine sitting through three hours of this. Two and a half was bad enough.

I know I watched it as a kid since I vaguely remembered some of the scenes, but it never left much of an impression on me. Revisiting it as an adult I was mostly baffled. The skateboarding kids in particular felt like it was trying to be cool in a way that didn't read as genuine - like how in a lot of late 80s/early 90s stuff it was popular to have the "cool kids" be skateboarders. Comes off like chasing after coolness in a way that isn't present in any other Spielberg I've seen.

You could easily cut at least 30-45 minutes off that movie. I can think of several scenes off the top of my head that could be cut without losing a god drat thing. Get that thing under 2 hours and you could have a good time.

Hook was on repeat in my household in the 90s so I really loved it. It was actually a surprise when I got older and learned it was generally disliked. I haven’t seen it in 20 years because I’m sure if I watched it now I would understand the complaints, and I like to keep the good memories intact.

You need a really high tolerance for Robin Williams to enjoy Hook

There's some parts of Hook that I like. But I find Rufio such a loving annoying character it just completely ruins the movie, making it unwatchable.

I loved it as a kid, watched it as an adult, and at some point thought, "Jesus, how is this movie still going? Get to the climax already!" I think it was around when Tinker Bell turned into a full grown human for like 2 minutes.

Hook was a movie that I only barely kinda liked as a kid, in the sense that it was "fine" while playing with matchbox cars. Can't really imagine going back as an adult.

Speaking of annoying characters, I just watched Always and wow Dreyfuss and Hunter are two of the most irritating characters ever put to film. I’m glad his dumb rear end exploded in that plane. This movie even managed to make John Goodman irritating, a truly incredible feat.

I just started listening to the podcast ep on it and I’m flabbergasted that Griffin and Richard like the beginning of this movie. I’m with David on Dreyfuss I think. He’s so completely charmless and insufferable. The plane scenes are really good though

David’s Spielberg ranking is so weird to me. I like both AI and Minority Report but having them 1 and 2 is nuts. There’s maybe 15 movies I’d put over those two.
|
![]() |
|
Most of David's rankings feel pretty wild, but I also much prefer Spielberg in dumb schlock mode. In no particular order... Last Crusade, Raiders, Minority Report, Tintin. Catch Me If You Can, Jaws, and Jurassic Park vying for fifth place.
|
![]() |
|
I mean I think I generally prefer the schlock too, but my mind reels at not having some combo of Jaws, Jurassic Park, Raiders, and ET as the top 4. My crazy opinion is that I’d put Duel at 5.
|
![]() |
|
Duel is my number 2 right now, but I'm going back watching post-Schindler's right now so everything after like 1996 is unwatched at the moment. I have never seen any Spielberg post Saving Private Ryan except the Terminal. Maybe I'm the crazy one. My top 5 pre-Schindlers is: 1. Jurassic Park 2. Duel 3. Temple of Doom 4. Last Crusade 5. Jaws I could see Schindler pushing into the 3 or 4 spot though. Zurtilik fucked around with this message at 21:34 on Apr 14, 2025 |

Wait I haven’t listened to the JP ep yet, did they rank them already? Didn’t wait for Schindler’s List?
|
![]() |

I find Duel top 5 pretty crazy considering all his films with great scripts and scores, but I respect the purity of it. AI number 1 feels like a critic choice, but it pretty high up for me I think. Maybe top 7.

My dad took the family to Jurassic Park in theaters. I was 5. We entered late (in the first nedry scene) and when the T-rex broke out and started killing people I started crying so much we had to leave and I didn't see the full movie until...2006?
|
![]() |
|
The guy has made several perfect no notes movies (to borrow a Blank Check phrase), ranking them is really hard for me. But if you put a gun to my head I'd have to go with ET. It's the movie that perfectly combines Spielbergs talents as a filmmaker with him telling a somewhat deeply personal movie.

I saw Jurassic in the theater with my parents when I was five, and I loving loved every second of it. Especially the gore. Although I did hold my mom’s hand during the spitter scene “in case she got scared”.
