From Mercury Park, north London, to Central Park, from Ellis Island to the White House, the United States is filled with divisions — and an excellent rhyme work from Lin-Manuel Miranda showed that you can turn their fractures into something even more positive. Emma Watson — who campaigned extensively to get women to see and run for office this year — is featured on the YouTube video, which Miranda recorded as a way to mark the International Day of the Girl. Watson joins Miranda in uniting women over what the latter calls “the greatest fight we ever had — an equality fight.” Miranda starts the rhyme by saying that his father “love[d] a nice kiss,” adding: “When he see[ed] little girl he get[ted] dizzy, He couldn’t tell if he was horny or seeing his reflection in her.” “In this country, there are only 10 places that allow you to smoke,” Watson rejoins, saying “That’s not cool!”

Some of the lyrics were inspired by conversations with Watson, but there’s a lot of other inspiration, too. Take the last line — in which Miranda points out that “looking at my daughter on my lap, she looks strong” and that she needs to say that to other boys too. As Miranda says in an Instagram post, “We are encouraging equality in all forms.”

When it comes to actual equality, though, the song is optimistic rather than revolutionary. Many feminists have been busy pushing for a woman to be named Supreme Court justice, for example, yet the United States has yet to elect one — though the odds are still good. In fact, all nine justices, from a single woman, could be women, including Alexander Hamilton’s wife, Eliza Schuyler. There were only a few nominated women in the 19th century, but we’ve gone from five of them to three. The United States has been trying to pass a woman’s suffrage bill for years, but progress has been slow.
