the differences in translation are interesting.

so far from what i've seen the fan translation's names are better localized - byzel instead of beiser, lise rather than riesz (though that's typical square), etc. - but kevin not being a caveman is kinda nice

Having finished Kevin's story, he still does kind of talk like a caveman, it's just less pronounced. He tends to bark out short sentences. It's honestly kind of weird because nobody else in Ferolia talks like that and he has no reason to be uneducated.

Also, his dad is a total dick and I strongly regret not getting to kill him, especially since even if he didn't kill the dog or Kevin's mom he still started a war that murdered a bunch of innocent people for no reason.

Oh yeah, I've been able to find some good written responses to Mana, I only meant video/audio responses to it. I wanted to hear someone as excited about it as I was.

Finally found one though! A guy named Vinny from the Vinesauce (?) channel recognized it as Seiken Densetsu 3 and seemed pretty excited about it. Got one! :unsmith:

Would Secret of Evermore count as a game of this series? I grew up with Secret of Mana but I was terrible at playing it and eventually my brother got SoE and it played a lot like it but was a lot more fun and easier for my dumb western rear end. I only ask because I always assumed it was made by the same team with how it played and the ui.

It was made by a completely western team, the only game made by Square USA and also where Jeremy Soule (Elder Scrolls composer) got his start in the business, but also I don't think anybody cares if you talk about it here, it's a cool game.

So having not played this in decades, I've picked a party of Duran/Riesz/Hawk. Riesz is going Light/Dark for party buffs, Hawk is probably going Dark/Light for Debuffs. I'm thinking about taking Duran Swordmaster but that leaves me without any healing. Am I going to regret that or do the sabers and damage make up for it?

This is a great combo and almost identical to what I always use (Dark/Dark for Hawkeye). Riesz and Duran have the mulit-target buffs to get everyone going quickly, leaving Hawkeye to apply his debuffs. Poto Oils and Moon Saber should more than cover most of your healing needs.

Secret of Evermore has this really foreboding and sort of creepy aesthetic that I think stems largely from Jeremy Soule's soundtrack, which is unusually atmospheric for an SNES game (as opposed to the JRPG style of hyper tracks with notey melodies, active basslines, and lots of percussion). The gameplay is also a lot of fun, though there's quite a bit of missable stuff like learnable spells and spell components that could really cripple you in combat if you don't find them. I remember it being a fairly difficult game overall. But hey, a Square RPG with time travel and a dog companion—how could that NOT be great?

But yeah man, this soundtrack...

There’s an old glitch that makes SoE a breeze too: if you attempt to use your escape spell during a boss fight, it makes you invincible. I used this to great effect as a kid.

I actually think SoE's soundtrack is one of Soule's best works. He got pigeonholed over time into doing fairly generic-sounding orchestral high fantasy music, but I vastly prefer the moodier/atmospheric tone that SoE strikes.

There's another bug where you can cast Atlas, save, reload, and then when Atlas wears off your attack will rollover through 0 to ~65,000. Works with other buff spells too.

The game has this moody and lonely atmosphere that I've never really experienced in another game. It's so well done and I have such fond memories. You're right in that the soundtrack contributes heavily to that atmosphere. I hope they do another collection with that and Legend of Mana or something one day.

Secret of Mana has it so you can miss attacks, and also enemies can block them, but the original version of the game gives you no feedback on misses, and enemy guards only make a little noise.

Did they give a release date for Trials of Mana in the direct? I didn't play the original and I'm super hyped to play the remake because the artstyle looks amazing and I've heard lots of good things about it.

What other Mana game would you goons recommend me to play?

The only ones in the series I've played were Legend of Mana which had a somewhat fun combat system as PS1 games go and fun world building mechanic, but the story was meh, and Dawn of Mana which I really liked despite the terrible combat system due to the slightly more interesting story, great music, how big and detailed the maps were and how gorgeous it looked. Particularly this little fucker

It was. Or at least I remember so? I played this way back in the PS2 around 2004-2005 . From what I remember the world falls into darkness and you have to kill your best friend, the protagonist from Sword of Mana (I think?), your girlfriend and your Navi

Yeah, I remember literally everyone other than the protagonist bites it, and the latter half of the game is him crying and euthanizing his loved ones, then he returns home to his desolate and empty village. Happy ending!
Deffo seems like a villain origin story. A lot of people say that Stroud from that game somehow survived and became the SD3 Archdemon, but honestly, it's gotta be the protagonist.

I know you're taking it back but it's a cool fight because it activates havok physics on the tower you were just climbing as part of the stage and both you and the boss' attacks can make it crumble, it's a fun idea. Ultimately most of the bosses in that game are just "find environment object, chuck it at the boss" though.

I’m about 4 hours in and it’s virtually the exact same. That Neil guy who translated it in the 90’s did a phenomenal job as it turns out, and the port is identical to the original game as far as I can tell.

Only changes I’ve noticed so far are a few basic localization changes to the names of some of the countries, towns, spell names; stuff like that. Gameplay and plot are exactly the same (right down to a few unfortunate stat glitches; we’ve yet to confirm if crits are back (I haven’t seen them) or if Duran’s shield works now, for instance—I’m starting to suspect they’ve not been addressed :( )

Kevin's vocal pattern is less annoying, and Charlotte's is much more annoying. Also the ruler of Altena is now the True Queen instead of the Queen of Reason, which seems like a downgrade.

In general both translations seem to be of good quality; the new one appears to be running for consistency with Heroes of Mana.

It could be a consistency thing, but that is a strange change to make. Out of curiosity I tracked down the Japanese title and it seems to be "理の女王" which makes Queen of Reason more accurate? Strange.
