My inner twelve-year-old has been going apeshit since last week. SoM and SD3 were my introduction to and the beginning of my love affair with action RPGs. Not only is one of my absolute favorite games of all time finally getting an official English release, it's also getting a shiny new 3d remake with updated gameplay. Honestly, I'd still get the remake if it were just a reskin, because SD3's gameplay has aged pretty well, especially compared to SoM. But there's a lot of room to bring it up to date with modern ARPGs, and I'm learning from this thread a bunch of stuff was bugged that my stupid tween-rear end didn't notice. So far, it looks really great, and I have faith they can strike gold again.

Kevin forever. Though, with these more detailed models, all the bois are pretty cute. Gonna be hard choosing my first team.

Man, watching the intro I legit got chills when the theme transitioned to Angel's Fear. My inner 12 year old is hype as gently caress.

Very pleased with the combat system and how the game encourages me to jump everywhere like a madman. Wish there were more spells to play around with, but I was satisfied with the power of Angela's first one and the speed of casting.

The voice acting is charming and doesn't take itself too seriously, if a bit uneven in quality/intensity. Ludgar and Deathjester Goremand are pretty great, but Kevin could be more beastly to match his broken-ish English. I'm glad I didn't pick Angela as a starter and have to deal with her shriek every third jump/roll.

Lumina is fabulous, but it's a bit jarring how the model is like a rock shaped like a wisp of light. I hope all the elementals have goofy personalities.

Playing Angela's flashback after having Kevin as a primary felt like a bit of a slog. Am I missing some neat trick, or is that just what the non-combat specialists have to deal with early on?

That's how it was in the original, Angela had to slog through the ice with her staff and nothing else.

Yes, I vividly remember doing a run like that *shudder*

I was wondering if they threw her a bone this time. Oh well, the first spell already feels pretty great, so hopefully that makes up for it. Or just pick her as a sidekick and skip all that, lol.

I really like what they did with this track

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoVhHStgpvM

I mentioned a few day ago that it seemed like all the music was more transcription than arrangement, with each instrument hitting every note from the original with virtually no exceptions. After playing the demo and listening more, that still holds true for the most part, but I have picked up on a few minor changes. But it's still really wonderful because they're subtle and don't take away from the song's "thesis" as it were at all. For instance, in the track above, they removed the accented shaker part from the original and replaced it with some light hand drumming. They also added some really tasty sustained strings in the part when the main theme repeats itself.

I'm just so impressed with the direction they took at arranging these tracks—90% original with an extra 10% punch-up. IMO it's the best route they could have taken.

Oh also the Crimson Wizard's teleportation effect looks fucken rad

Yeah, I normally hate remade tracks from 8/16-bit originals. It always feels like something was lost in translation. That hasn't happened here. They managed to keep the charm of the original while still feeling modernized.

I'm mostly going by the gameplay video that came out last week. Maybe they were playing on easy but they utterly annihilated every enemy and nuked the boss super quickly without ever needing to heal (even with intentionally failing a boss mechanic to show it off), and that was a much later-game area. It seems weird to me they'd play on easy mode for a gameplay preview video so I was assuming it was normal mode. Maybe they were really, really overleveled?

This video, specifically:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p29PSJEdjpc

They're 3 levels higher than the boss and 7 higher than the mobs. Not necessarily really overleveled, but still significant. I don't think it's necessarily weird to do the game in easy mode if they just want to show off the gameplay.

It's very likely not hard mode though, and we don't have enough information to say whether that'll be a challenge or not.

Another random thought: I like how your party splits up when you get to towns. Makes them all seem more like people with their own plans and preferences and whatnot, and it’s cool when you run into them while exploring random establishments. Oh hey Duran! :)

I got spooked by Angela when turning a corner in Wendel, because I assumed the "party members disappear inside you" thing happened. Nice touch when I got used to it.

It's going to be funny finding out how things are supposed to look versus how my mind interpreted the sprites. To me, Ludgar was always this bloodhound-faced dude with a glorious lion mane. But it turns out he's pretty, and what I thought were jowls were his pecs.

I want to do some playthroughs of the original to hype myself up. Are there any guides on the stat system and comparison of the classes? I never really understood it and those archaic systems were always my least favorite thing about 90s (and sadly still some modern) RPGs. I know some things were bugged and not fixed in the collection.

I'd prefer something based on the most current understanding, and not something uploaded to GameFAQs in the early 2000s, rofl.

I don't want to read a goddamn text file, lol.

Also other stuff that may have been totally mapped out since then, like the exact formula for damage calculation or something. I also learned that crits/dodging don't work at all and don't recall that being confirmed knowledge back in the day.

Based on watching GDQ, people are always learning weird new quirks about old games.

I hope they revamp the gear system so it amounts to more than just "buy the new thing when it's in stores". Although it's more satisfying than I like to admit when you upgrade and feel the power spike.

On a related note, (in the OG game) is there a difference between light and dark classes' gear besides flavor? Do dark classes get stronger weapons in general? GameFAQs isn't helpful there, or when it comes to comparing classes in general. Lots of info that sounds like it was based on intuition vs data.

Eh, at least they let you respec. That should encourage experimentation and finding things out on your own. I can't play a lot of old RPGs because of the ability to "ruin" your character, and feeling like I need to use guides just to avoid that.

I assume every class is going to have a variety of passive perks, while distribution of spells is relatively untouched. Like, otherwise going dark Kevin will be really boring. This should give them an opportunity to draw more distinction between the more samey classes of the original.
