Basilmarkets heyday was the times when everyone piled into the 'free market' essentially just a set of wide open maps and they spammed code:
Then they made a feature where you coukd get a stall with like 4 items that acted like an NPC shop, you first had to leave the game AFK while you character manned the shop, then they introduced NPC player-shopkeepers. Maximum Sexy Pigeon posted:Is Twilight fandom dead yet? Phone posting but if you’re ever curious about the breakdown of Twilight fandom go look up “das sporking,” specifically the posts where the films and all the interviews/content published after the books were out. They are extremely long and detailed to the point of being an “anti” fandom, but interesting in how a wildly popular author can completely tank their own IP via what many perceived as fan antagonism. Possibly the best example of why creators should not openly, regularly interact with fans on social media and forums before JK Rowling went full TERF.

If Valve announced HL3 tomorrow it'd be huge news, whereas a lot of these other properties would essentially have to build interest the same way a new IP would. That got a lot of attention for reasons outside of the Half Life fandom. Namely, it was a dumpster fire of terribleness Tons of stolen copyrighted content, mediocre everything, etc. All the attention it got was people gawking at how a trainwreck like it got so far and just how deep the rabbit hole went.

There were thoss people who thought they were the blue-cat people from Avatar and tried to learn the language. I thought there was an old Weekend Web feature on them but I'm phone posting and can't confirm. I also remember coming across Mpreg photo manips in the late 90's/very early 00's for the Sentinel. A quick check on the Archive of Our Own fanfic site found that Avatar had barely a third as many stories as the Michael Bay reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And, checking the actual stories, I found several on the first page of results that were clearly mis-tagged Avatar the Last Airbender fanfics.

I know Avatar once had a fan base to the point that people were getting depressed that they couldn’t ever actually live on the Avatar planet because it wasn’t real. There was a huge fan base in China, too. I haven’t seen much about them in years and ugh yeah there’s gonna be a resurgence of fugly blue catpeople soon.

I am so loving ready for an Animorphs reboot. The books were total middle schooler crack, but the TV show was terrible and I don't think there was ever a notable video game. There are a couple of fan wikis out there but otherwise it's pretty slim pickings. There are a couple of articles about how they were surprisingly good, but there's always this air of glum resignation that they're gone and probably won't return.

I don't remember if I stopped reading the Animorphs after one or two dozen installments, but I loved every bit of it. They started coming out around the time I was branching out into science fiction, and I only stopped keeping up with them when I'd discovered better. But I'll always remember. Also that first article is wrong, Tobias didn't truly choose to stay a hawk iirc, he was forced for the good of the team to go past the 2 hour permanency limit. Remember the time they (or one of them) got shunted into extradimensional space because that was where their extra mass went when they morphed and it was also where ships traveled FTL so even a near miss was a disaster?

Liquid Communism posted:What, the dubs? Yeah, they were notorious at the time for translating an obviously gay couple as 'cousins'. I think they mean the SaveOurSailors group. I don't recall them being extremely homophobic, at least in the context of the 90s. I know some believed a rumor going around that Sailor Uranus was originally Prince Uranus reborn as a girl on Earth, and 'his' and Neptune's relationship continued. Which, you know....honestly, while it's still "Well, there must be a reason they a couple, because no one is just gay", at least they acknowledged they are a couple, and other then "gotta explain it somehow" didn't really find anything wrong with them being together. Which is fairly accepting by late 90s teen standards. I know the media was slowly improving at that time, but I was a gay, trans high schooler around that period, and I can tell you teenagers themselves were still seriously homophobic on average.
