If I remember the commentary correctly, it's not even exactly frame perfect, in that you can actually hit exactly the correct frame and the game just randomly decides whether you get the prize or not.

Yeah, it was fixed in the NTSC release but in the original Japanese 1.0 you have about a 30% chance of it counting even if you hit the correct frame because the timer is way more precise than the frames. Like the timer counts hundredths of a second when the game only runs at 30fps. Any time from 9.99-10.01 means you hit the correct frame but just got hosed.

The runner hit the correct frame more than 20 times.

Correct, its frame imperfect (basically) for the Japanese version, whereas it was made easier for the overseas market.

It was great when MajinPhil got his revenge a few days ago by nailing 10:00 on the 1st try.

Though this actually makes me wonder if some of the chips that the N64 uses for timing might go slightly off over all of these years, and become unreliable for activities like this specific instance.

Phil came back to his own N64 and it worked but the unit at GDQ was probably not his own.

Free Your Mind
My favourite runs from SGDQ:
Half-Minute Hero by dowolf - A JRPG that goes by blazingly fast even when played casually becomes hilarious as a speedrun
Titanfall 2 by Bryonato - Lots of really cool speed tech in this one
Blindfolded Punch-Out!! (Wii) by zallard1 - Just a legendary run, one of the all-time greats
Silent Hill 3 by Punchy - The run itself is good but it's the ending that really elevates it
Divekick by RagingCherry and ESAM - A tight race of a goofy-rear end minimalist fighting game?? Pretty fun.
Shrek Extra Large by Silo_Simon - "Fart Boost Jump"
T.R.A.G.: Tactical Rescue Assault Group by CavemanDCJ - Cozy couch teaches us the meaning of friendship (and anime). Funniest run this year
Remnants of Naezith by XepiccatX - A game you've never heard of that looks really slick when played skillfully
Invictus by Dode and Grand Poo World 2 by MitchFlowerPower - A pair of great Mario Romhacks played at an incredible level

Lots of great runs this year, hard to even narrow down a list.

Minecraft was the highlight of the event for me because of how lucky the guy got and how advanced the skills have gotten in that community.

The Metroid/ALTTP run was very watchable to someone not familiar because it had really funny commentary throughout, though kind of mean spirited. Someone needs to post a clip of the dude nailing the voice acting of like six sesame street characters at once

The Zelda NES run was very tense, very close, and very technically impressive

It's interesting how some group dynamics work. Any one of those people or the audience heckling would have been insufferable in most groups, but they all work together well.
