Checking for breadcrumbs is a scummy thing to do. Mafia look for breadcrumbs to pick targets. For Town players, breadcrumbs are useful for supporting a claim later, or for seeking hidden information after a fellow Town is dead. Redneck Nazgul has unwittingly slipped and revealed his alignment. You can check his "Sneaky Breadcrumbs" to know that he's a Mafia.

"Sneaky Breadcrumbs" is a level-up mechanic exclusive to Mafia. If a Mafia player does something sneaky, they'll reveal the location of all breadcrumbs on the floor so that other players may follow that same trail. The first thing to do if Mafia finds a hidden clue is to move the Mafia's flag to an open location on the ground for them to check. The next move is to move their flag further down the floor in order to peek inside the breadcrumbs, and so on through out the breadcrumbs. A Mafia player may also go inside a breadcrumb to retrieve a treasure, and if that player is caught, the breadcrumbs will reveal a reward. These breadcrumbs can be discovered even if people do not check for them.

A Mafia player can only move their flag up or down the ground in order to peek inside a breadcrumb.

This is the best way one can spend an enjoyable time with one's friends and enemies in that tedious time known as the joke phase. That's why it is worth playing in this phase, because the game allows you to laugh, and often jokes are about the funniest bit of anything you do, in their worst form, which in this scenario is laughing at your failures.
The second best thing about the joke phase is how much it's like a free time as opposed to a grind. This means that any other aspect of your week is just a formality, if something is really bothering you or you want to spend your time doing that. You are free to do whatever you like and you may never have to talk about anything with anyone again. You are constantly trying to be better, and you do so because having an enjoyable game time allows you to be the person you want to be. I can't stress enough how valuable that freedom is.
In the course of playing the game I met some good people, and that's a great feeling. At first I could barely concentrate on anything due to wanting to make new friends. I was playing games about some guy with no interest in them that I thought was funny. I made fun of the way some girls used to react to girls they weren't dating.
